GrEE: Staff of Earth or Elemental Staff?

The staff of earth would normally be the obvious choice for this character, but the Elemental Staff is just so tempting. My earth spells are all perfectly castable without the enhancer, so the real question is whether the resists and random damage type of the Elemental Staff are worth more than the spell power boost and guaranteed earth damage of the staff of earth. I haven't done a true code-dive, but my quick reading of the knowledge bots suggests that the staff of earth's raw damage output will be greater but checks AC, so I'm not sure how much weight to give that.

you have 0 evocations so the elemental staff will do the same damage as a +3 club
this isn't very good
(i also wouldn't recommend getting a bunch of evocations)

not many people here seem to realize this, but resistances dont actually do anything if you are not getting hit by resistible attacks
so you can just wield the staff of earth 99% of the time and have way better spells, and wield elemental staff on the occasions where you are actually going to get hit by resistible attacks

Yes, I meant to say "perfectly effective without the enhancer," as in they are killdudesing awesomely at unenhanced spellpower.

I'm planning to pick up a bit of evocations either way, I figured that was implicit in the question since it improves the damage from both staves (but hasn't been particularly important for this character yet) -- is there some reason not to pick up 5-10 levels?

Anyway thanks, that's basically what I expected to hear but it's helpful sometimes to be snarkily reminded that "ooh neato fixedart" is not the same as "this fixedart is perfect for this character," which is a trap I fall into way too often.

You don't have any resist fire, so I'd use the elemental staff. It's incredibly powerful. Yes, you should probably have about 10 evocations to use it, although if you wanted to just get 5 and switch that'd be okay for a little while. I used it for a long time (until extended basically) on a DDHe: http://dobrazupa.org/morgue/tasonir/mor ... 192620.txt. Granted, there are plenty of things you have to fight that don't check fire resistance, but I'm lazy and I don't like switching weapons all the time because I would inevitably be wielding a staff of earth when harold hits me for 50 damage with a bolt of fire. I prefer to idiot proof my characters because I'm an idiot :)

Switching to the staff of earth if you want a spellpower boost is only .5 turns, you should probably use both in any case. The elemental staff is an incredible defense boost to basically everything in the game from your weapon slot. It makes dying hard. I love that.

Agreed on idiot-proofing when possible.

As it happens, I almost immediately found an aux armour upgrade with rF+, which gave me at least one pip of most resists and I've had pretty decent AC already. So I've been using Staff of Earth pretty much exclusively and it's been killdudesing well when I need it to. I'll be using the Elemental as a defensive swap in Zot:5 for sure though, and probably Hells and elsewhere too since I'm likely to go for 15 runes this run.
