I started playing Crawl a week ago and my around 80% of characters die to invisible orc wizards and priests, I can easily kill early game threats if I'm not stupid but whenever I run into orc packs my game is pretty much over. This particular character is my 5th best (with my best being a lvl 9 troll berserker) Is there any way to deal with them aside from avoiding them?

I try to get to hallways, and I use Summon Imp, Conjure Flame and Mephitic Cloud. Different class, but that was my solution.

Hallways or other narrow passes will minimize the possible locations of them. You can throw missiles in the direction you think they are, even if you can't see them. Same with spells.

Re: YASD-Invisible Orc Wizards & Priests

I suggest to play a pure melee class like Berserker first. Necromancer is not very friendly for new players because it is a natural hybrid, you would need to train magic skills and weapon and armour/dodging and fighting. I am surprised you were able to get to experience level 6 without any weapon.
Unarmed combat without corresponding skill is extremely bad for most species, even a +0 dagger with 0 Short Blades is better.

I have played troll & kobold berserkers however I don't like them very much and more often than not misusing berserk was the cause of my death. Anyway I just cast pain and vampiric draining to kill enemies, i did have some trouble with imps but I summoned butterflies to take the damage for me as I kited them. I planned to get control undead at level 8 because i couldn't cast pain on undead enemies. Are there any other beginner combo's?

Re: YASD-Invisible Orc Wizards & Priests

"Hints mode" contains Minotaur Berserker, Deel Elf Conjurer and Centaur Hunter so I think these are supposed to be the best combos for beginners.

Sort of - read my post here: viewtopic.php?p=178105#p178105
Basically, yes, avoid anything you are not comfortable with your ability to kill.
But whether or not you're going to do that, the moment a monster sees you (naturally or by throwing a stone/equivalent at it), you can 'peel' it away from the rest of its packs by walking 10+ tiles away. Even if its pack members hear the noise of it shouting they'll go as far as the shout, not see you and mindlessly wander, so if you retreated far enough away, you can be confident you're only dealing with the one thing you saw + you can in the process move closer to the stairs, for a retreat in case everything goes south.

Crawl is not a game about killing all the dudes and leaving a mighty hero - pick not just your fights, but WHERE you're going to fight them!

On the subject of misusing berserk: Rule Zero helps excellently with berserking. If you've peeled away one or a few monsters 10+ tiles away from all unexplored territory, all places where you suspect there more be more pack monsters, etc. then berserk, then you can be confident that nothing else will come in the post-berserk hangover. You can even drag them onto a different floor for maximum berserk security. And never, ever rest out the post berserk hangover in a place where a monster might wander from unexplored territory and notice you.

Return to YASD! YAVP! and characters in progress too
