CIP - HE Conjurer - Now what? {YASD drowned}

I have a decent High Elf Conjurer going. Just finished Lair and picked up some nice artifacts on 12 after kill an ice statue. I have some good skills\spells.

This is usually the point where I try something the ends up killing me. What should I do to develop this characher so he is ready to survive going after runes?

I have books in my stash with spells like Iron Shot, Poison Arrow, and Venom Bolt. One with Tornado that is currently useless and High Level book I haven't id yet.

I just started to use the trident to raise my fighting by attacking weaker monsters.

Normally, I would go for the Hive or Mines next. I figure I can deal with those as long as I am careful. But they don't usually provide much in the way of artifacts to help fill out my resitances.

it looks fine! i'd say try to victory dance charms a little bit if you have a chance, because eventually you'll find some of: swiftness, flight, haste, deflect missiles and those will serve you very, very well. don't branch out to earth magic, you have a poor aptitude and it'll conflict with the levels you have in air magic. also train that trident if you do intend to use it (as opposed to just wielding it for the resistances), because right now you'll be very slow with it (press '@') and that might get you killed.

you can do hive with no problems with the cloud spells. same for the mines, but be careful walking up and down staircases. you may want to try to find the entrance to the elven halls, as you'll need some books to branch out (and you have mephitic and poisonous cloud, rPois and sInv, so the first levels should be easy), just be careful with orc:4. the swamp and the snake pit can wait.

there's some redundancy in the spell list, you can forget some stuff if you chance upon amnesia scrolls. you'll need the slots.

Figured I'd post this here, since A. it's around the same path as the OP but a little further along, so you might want to take a look at what a character that can clear Snake and Swamps looks like, and B. I have most of the same questions.

Elven Halls down to 4 is the next step for this guy, then a little past Vaults, maybe a stint in the Abyss. I found a Book of Frost early on as a HEWz, and as I'm used to playing an IE I picked it up and started training ice magic. Now, what I really want to do is pick up a Manual of Fire Magic that's in one of the shops and eventually be able to cast Firestorm at Excellent-- This'll be my first win, but I want to try for a little more than the normal 3-runer. If my Spellcasting is 27, Conjurations in the 20's, INT in the 40's and I worship Vehumet and maybe have a wiz bonus, what level should Fire Magic be at to get Firestorm to Excellent? I know I'll have a double-EXP penalty for Fire Magic given my skill in Ice, but I'm pretty sure Ice Storm will let me scum around in Pan (or Abyss?) long enough to get 100K XP at least twice to dump with the manual. Is this nonsense?

Training Stabbing has been totally worth it, finding that wizard hat and being able to go invisible nearly at will has been the death of many a unique. The stabbing usually won't kill them outright, but it'll let me get one good hit in and just Poison Arrow them to death after that.

On Spells, I don't have Deflect Missiles yet. My Charms aren't that high. :/ With the poison staff I have, though, and PA, I think I can afford to save some XP from Conjurations/Spellcasting to throw into charms before I get to Vaults (and all those nasty Yaktaurs). Besides that, what spells should I lose? I have a ton of books with fire and earth magic I could burn to forget all my spells if I wanted. I think it's probably about time to let go of Magic Dart and Throw Frost to make room for some good enhancers and Dispel Undead when I find it (for Crypt).

Finally, the other helmet I have has rF/rC+ and rElec, but it's -5 and doesn't have the awesomeness on it like my current wizard hat. Is it worth losing the bonuses for the resistances?

@ieattime20: why would you want to do that? Why not just go ahead and use ice storm? Sure fire storm has smite targeting and the cute little fire vortexes, but ice storm is no slouch either. Apart from that I don't see how you can stand going around with a Str of 5, inventory management is such a bitch when you need to think twice about picking up even a mere scroll, not to mention the danger of stat drain.

@asdu: Fire storm's smite targeting and fire damage seems more useful for some of the post-endgame content. I might be wrong. The option of having that manual is what pushes me towards it-- I can easily get the skill up really high, really fast. I fully intend to use both to great effect. The smite targeting makes it a bit more useful for staying alive when I have summons. Basically, I'm not getting Necromutation (I'm not beating any Ziggurats), so I want to be able to kill quickly and effectively.

I guess I should stress that Ice Storm at hungerless or nearly so is the #1 priority. I'm mainly seeing if Fire Storm is even feasible with the EXP penalty, even with the manual.

As far as str, it's a bitch and a half, but being out of the food game for the most part (high INT) is worth it. Just means I run to the stash a little more frequently. Since I got the hell end of Lair, moving everything to the Vestibule isn't going to be that bad.

I don't know, I think the whole "hungerless casting" deal is often overrated. As you said, low Str means more travels to the stash, which probably cost you more food than what you're saving by having a spell hungerless rather than at "sultana" level. With the difference that when you cast a high level spell you generally do so in order to kill someting and hopefully get chunks out of it, whereas no one is going to give you food for your marathon efforts :P
Less carrying capacity also means less potions, wands, scrolls and all that goodness that can save your skin when things go wrong.
I guess it comes down to playstyle, but when I play a spellcaster with really low starting Str like a deep elf or spriggan, raising my Str to 7 or 8 is on par as a priotity to getting mephitic cloud (or whatever other crucial early spell) castable reliably, and definitely more important than getting it hungerless.

:oops: I forgot to turn it back on. I can combine train it with the trident. So that should work out if I don't get killed in the meantime.

redundant spells seems to be a theme. What should I forget?

a - Magic Dart - only 1 but could do without
b - Throw Frost - cheap kill spell for weak creatures
c - Iskenderun's Mystic - go this for ice resistant
d - Lightning Bolt - don't use much - too noisy, low air skill
e - Bolt of Cold - bread and butter spell right now
f - Mephitic Cloud - was thinking of getting rid of but sounds like I should keep
g - Poisonous Cloud - recent add - pretty useful to keep
h - Blink - haven't had too long - need to train\use
i - Repel Missiles - keep until I get deflect
j - Summon Butterflies - escape but never use
k - Orb of Destruction - not sure - most powerful spell right now
m - Apportation - keeper

So I guess I get rid of Lightning bolt and may be Orb of destruct. What else?

What should I be looking for?

Get rid of Throw Frost. You really need to be meleeing weak creatures, I say, for Fighting and Dodging EXP. Also Shield. You have a buckler, right? The penalty to spellcasting is completely eliminated at Shields 5 for a buckler.

I don't have a buckler. I just got a +1 shield of reflection in the mines.

I just almost died in the mines though. Ran into a Iron Dragon skeleton on O3. I was down to 0 MP. Teleported away into a huge pack which included Louise, Donald, and Urug. I survived using a wand of healing long enough to teleport again only to move about 6-7 space away. Out of healing, I use a blink scroll to jump to a stairs going down to Q4. Ran down there and nobody was about. I recovered and went back up and killed them all. :twisted:

This is probably the worst mine experience I have had in the mines and I haven't seen much of O4 yet.

Should I memorize Abjuration. I am not sure if that would have helped with the Dragon Skeleton.

With shields (as opposed to bucklers), you need skill at 15 to get rid of spellcasting penalty. I think the penalty's worse too, but I'm not sure. You can do CTRL-F and search for a buckler. If nothing else, you will almost always find one on the first level of Elf, which isn't all that hard.

Tons of uniques is always just a pain in the rear. That sounds about like the near-death experiences that I've had, though usually it's not until Elf/Snake/Swamps that I deal with more than two at a time on a level. But O4 can be nasty for your level-- Orc Warlords are nasty as all hell and hard to kill, while Sorcerers can summon demons that summon other, lesser demons, quickly crowding out your avenue options.

Plus it's one school, and (up to .7 at least) can work as a poor man's dig. OOD will carry you right though Zot. Oh, and it's cool.

I've always preferred Poison Arrow to OOD. More reliable, less turns to kill, no accidents. OOD has the main advantage that it's a single school spell in a school you WILL have very high as a blasty magey type, but I find myself leaning on PA more and more as the game goes on.

I did the dump at my stash. I am holding most of my useful books and some staffs I have collected. I was using the Staff of Energy and both rings of power before. But have gradually transitioned to more melee and holding the Trident all the time.

Have I gone to far with the other skills at the expense of Spellcasting\Conj\Ice? What does it take to be able to learn/use ice storm? I get poor on it without the shield and armor.

I was going to do the first four levels of swamp next. I feel like I can take Snake:5. I have been down there is past lives. Not so sure about Elf:5 since I have never survived more than a level or 2 before this time.

i don't think you're spreading yourself too thin, you're still level 16.

you'll negate the spellcasting penalty for a buckler with 5 levels in shields, so keep working towards it and turn it off when you get there. if you think it's too steep now take it off before facing bad stuff. and i wouldn't worry too much about the spellcasting penalty for light armour. if you want numbers there are some here: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=1291&p=13963&hilit=penalty#p13963, but i wouldn't worry about it.

you'll want better advice because i've only got ice storm castable with one character, but it was very similar to yours. you still have a way to go. i'd personally try to get haste (swiftness + flight would be easier, but you haven't found flight yet) and deflect missiles and also control teleport working first. those can save you from a lot of bad stuff.

you can do elf save for the last floor with see invisible, poison resistance, and the cloud spells. just don't rush it.

best crawling advice is don't go over water if you can't see the other side.

Were you in that ice cave which has a pointless river area which stretches for a while and has no exits?

Probably. I was trying to find out if there was something hidden beyond the water. I really don't know the vaults very well. Don't see them much.

Oh yeah, I know that place. I was lucky to find it with a MfCr though. Nasty stuff if you can't swim.
