A couple of advice for my SpWr slinger

Hi guys!
the idea behind this SpWr was to have a "utilty/mobility ranged with stabbing chances".
So I developed it with ranged combat in mind, started with melee/throwing until I found a sling, then trained slings.
High stealth means I can choose my combats.
Blink and Passage Of G. help to get out of difficult situations.
Portal Projectile helps to kill summoners, smiters, and so on that created me a lot of trouble with any other character.
Spriggan speed helps to kite any non-ranged enemy.
"Spirit" on my amulet gives a boost on vitality.
First levels were very difficult (3 or 4 tentatives to kill Grinder...), but thanks to Shroud of G. and Sp speed I survived.
I found also an exciting rod of thunderbolt and training a bit of evocation made it a very useful "destroy that horde of ants/yaks/rats" button.
It's not my "deepest" point so far, but it's the single character with most survivability so I hope for the best at the moment.
Now to the questions:

1) how to develop?

Slings is at 19 at the moment, should I go till 23-24, or should I train something else?
Stealth at 9.5 is very good for tactical purposes but is not enough to stab, and by the way 7.3 in Short Blades is a bit low. Should I train them?
I am very happy with dodge/evasion (dodge at 12.6, robe to maximize evasion, ring of evasion -> EV=33 ), but should I invest more?
I didnt find any book till now, but anyway I didnt want to specialize much in magic.

2) Slings: what I do with the +9,-6 sling of Okawaru's Castigation {flame, rN+ Int+2}???

Oka gifted it to me but the -6 is quite... doh. Should I enchant it? Is it of any purpose I cannot think about?

That sling is awful, do not use it. a 0 0 unbranded sling would probably do more damage. You also cant enchant it since its an artefact.

Well the most important things I would do would be getting some fighting (to around 10-12 at least) and if any book with any necro spell on it exists then train necro to put that dagger of pain to the good use it deserves. I would also probably just wear the invis ring over MR and get some more evo and stealth but then again that would be mostly convenience and it's not like at your current depth you're facing a lot of things a +4 sling of flaming with bullets can't kill as a Sp.

The -6 sling is arse (incredibly so) and you can't enchant artifacts.

One important and worrying thing is that you haven't used hero once, so you might not realize but Hero costs really really low piety and gives you a huge offensive and defensive boost. Huge enough that you probably don't want more slings skill ever.

OK, thank you for the advice!
Hero is great, you are right, I have to use it more often.
At the moment unluckily i cleared the Lair and Orcish Mines.
Then I read somewhere that correct order should be:
- Dungeon till Lair
- Clear Lair
- Clear OM
- First 4 levels of Shoals/Swamp/Snake
- Continue dungeon until Vaults
So, I entered Shoals. Maybe I should have continued dungeon instead.
I had no poison resistance. I was thinking: there is Spider Nest, Snake Pit, the Swamp... all places full of poisonous creatures. Why should I need poison resistance on a beach?
When I entered the Shoal, at first it seemed easy... I shot down two merfolks and a sea snake.
Jumping from island to island, I encountered one more water snake, then two, then 3 merfolks arrived, than a turtle.
Maybe I could have survived, I blinked away and was going invisible, but the sea snake poison is very strong. I managed to heal it with a couple of potions, but while drinking them the enemies reached me... and I was at 7 HP.
Sad.

Anyway thank you for the advices, I am quite happy because I never had cleaned Lair and OM so far... so it was a good run, I think.

Now I checked knowledge bot and found that...

0.13 order: Lair -> D:13 -> Orc -> D:20 -> Vaults (but not Vaults:5) -> D:27 -> get three runes -> Zot.
0.14 order: D -> Lair:8 -> Orc:3 -> D:16 -> Snake/Spider:5 -> Vaults:4 -> Depths:6 -> Swamp/Shoals:5 -> Vaults:5 -> Zot

So definitely I should have continued Dungeon until D:16 or D:20, and then going to Vaults or Snake/Spider

The bots might be outdated, considering D:16 and onward no longer exists. The main Dungeon now stops at D:15, and enters a brand new branch called the Depths, which is kinda like D:21 to D:27 all put together and made even harder (as in, Dire Elephants and Emperor Scorpions are now normal enemies, plus all the various Giants/Dragons/Yaktaurs that already existed). Vaults are also a little bit different: you can no longer enter them without at least one Rune. So, I used to clear through Vaults:4 before going after any Runes from any branch, and now I can't, I have to get a Rune from another branch first.

Usually it's safer to do Lair first and then the Orc Mines, but on occasion you can do the Mines first. You have to know what you're doing though. Since you might run into terrible enemies like Orc Sorcerers and High Priests (which can summon various demons), super-strong super-armoured Orc Knights, or even Stone Giants rarely, whereas all the Lair's worst threats at least still can't cast spells so they're easier to escape from or fight into submission, is what makes the Lair easier to beat before the Mines.

The Shoals are dangerous. Probably more dangerous than any other Lair branch in the game. On the other hand the loot you find down there is top notch. When you discover that your game has the Shoals instead of the Swamps, take it as a mixed blessing, and never tread down there lightly, wait until you're very prepared and have lots of ways to escape from danger. There's so many things down there that can completely trap you and shut down all of your escape options, until you're screwed beyond un-screwing. And Harpy packs will rip you to shreds if you're an EV character instead of an AC character x.x

If you made it to Lair with a Warper of all things, you're probably pretty good at the game! I suggest you try again a few times, and the more you practice the better you'll tend to do. Warpers are considered extremely challenging to play in the early game because of their lack of a solid attack-- I've only ever reached the Lair as a Warper a select handful of times, so props for making it as far as you did.

Also, though Okawaru is a good god for a Warper if general non-spell-combat superiority is what you want, Fedhas is fantastic for ranged attackers and she has several powers that can be put to use in many types of interesting situations, and Dithmeinos has some excellent defensive and escape abilities, though you're not allowed to use fire of any kind if you go with Dith. Then of course there's Trog if you decide you want more melee prowess than ranged, and Vehumet if you want to go the blaster-mage route.

What makes Warpers so tricky is that they HAVE to branch, and they have to branch quickly or they're in trouble because they can't kill hard enough to avoid being killed themselves. Translocations spells are not attacking spells, even the most "offensive" Translocations are either weapon buffs (Warp Weapon, Portal Projectile) or escape tools (Teleport Other, Disjunction), or the extremely niche Summon Forest which lays down a stage hazard that often times helps you, but isn't so good at killing outright. So, Warpers have to branch into some form of killing or another, which makes them much harder to play than a class that starts out just fine at killing (such as a typical Berserker or a Conjurer). You could say Warpers are an "experts only" character class. So again, props for making it as far as you did. I'd be very interested to hear you get farther next time and maybe even pick up a few Runes, if you decide to share!

Why even go Wr at all then?

Chei actually can work well with Wr, too. Because casting is less of an issue with the Int boost, you can focus more on melee (which you will certainly need if you follow Chei) and you actually have some potential escape options. I wouldn't necessarily recommend this for a Sp though.

Sorry for delayed reply but I could not reach the forum in the past days, I think there was some connectivity issue.
In the meanwhile I tried a HaHu, and some other tries at SpWr, that I like very much (when I do not die in the first 2 Dungeon levels :roll: )
The only downside i that Sp are very fragile, so usually I get killed from things I don't know... for example, last death was at D:13 from a Manticore that I started kiting with Stings already inside my skin. I discovered after 3 tiles of movement how much insane is moving with Stings, anyway.... lesson learned.
I tried also Dithmenos and I like him a lot... I love any ability. But... I miss too much Oka gifts, especially for ammo, in this all-ranged build. Maybe I can give him another try.
Fedhas is intriguing, but still I didn't try her.
