YASD - loudest character ever.
Oh man, what a ride. I decided to go with the most unapologetic melee combination i could think of: A formicid fighter of Qazlal with a shield of the gong. Everything was planned out to be as AC- and SH-heavy as possible, leaving me almost impenetrable to physical attacks from very early stages of the game, while being least stealthy in any way imaginable (due to heavy armor, Qazlal clouds and especially, shield of the gong).
My usual tactics would be to enter a level, stick around the stairs, and wait for every single enemy on that level to approach me. If something managed to hit me, I usually regenerated through my regen and vampiric halberd. It was mainly a tab-fest; when I was overwhelmed with the opposition, I would stair-scum and regenerate, and repeat.
Eventually I realized how OP that combination was for the early-mid-game (except for Swamp:5 where I met the Lernaean hydra) and started stair-diving to V:5, where some vault guardian/convocer/whatever blocked the stairs and my character died miserably.
Due to all the gong/Qazlal buffs, I managed to have SH42 (current trunk version, which, if I understood the release notes correctly, would be SH84 in 0.14).
I can not imagine surviving late or extended with such a character (drawing all the attention, and with limited retreat possibilities as a formicid), but it was a very fun experience.
