This character was so fun to play as, I had incredible gear, could fight well at close range with longswords, good armor and could spam Fireball with the help of an amulet of the gourmand. Basically, fireball never let anything get close. Got greedy and lost him in the Elven Halls...

That's the reason to why I never attempt to tackle the Elven Halls without Repel/Deflect Missiles.

Not just the Master Archers (on Elf:5), but the Knights hurt too when they use bows.

If you don't plan on taking on the vault on Elf5 Invisibility will work wonders on all the non bottom level elves. Just a ring/evokable artifact with the effect makes the branch clearable barring a nasty unique. Back out of sight when you see a threatening elf, mash the turn invisible command until it works, walk over and stab/shoot/melee the pointy eared bastards.

You will burn alot of food this way, as invisibility comes with a big hunger hit, but it is a fairly safe way of clearing the first four and a half floors.
