CiP: HOGl of Makhleb; not sure what to train

In my efforts to learn how to play non-mage starts, I've been running a lot of orcs of Makhleb. This one is going quite well, with two runes and most of the Vaults down so far, but my skilling plans have kind of gone to hell due to a number of recent developments and I'm not sure how I want to proceed.

My plan as of a couple of branches ago had been to get some utility spells castable in plate armor, starting with Blink (with the intention of abusing a Ring of Teleport Control, which as it turns out has been massively nerfed since the last time I did this). Right when I had just about achieved that, I got +13 Crystal Plate Armor {rC} from an acquirement scroll. 40+ AC is hard to turn down, and doubling down on Translocations training means I still have Blink available, but I can't cast much of anything else, and I only meet the strength requirement by a two-point margin right now (and that's with some lousy +3 STR gloves), so that whole situation is pretty dicey. I have access to Control Teleport (for 700 gold), Haste, and some Necromancy, but unless I downgrade my armor I can't even cast Swiftness. I have eight Enchant Armor scrolls, so dragon armour would be an option, but I only have fire scales so far and can't easily absorb the rC-.

Then I also found a +4/+3 Vampiric Demon Whip in the Vaults and I'm not sure if I should switch or not. It's great on paper, but with Makhleb I have to wonder if killing things faster with a +7/+7 Great Mace isn't the more practical way of healing. If I did switch, the need for +15 shields would eat up all my skill points for a while.

I have no clue what direction to take my character from here. Granted, it's mostly due to having too many excellent options, which is a good kind of problem to have, but I'm worried about wasting more experience than I probably already have. Should I train Charms in hopes of finding lighter armor? Should I switch to a one-hander and train Shields? Should I stick to what I have and get more defenses?

I haven't decided whether or not I'm shooting for anything in the extended endgame. My record is one three-rune win (MfIE), one four-rune win (MDDK), and one three-runer who died in Pandemonium, so I could go either way. Doing at least Tomb is damn tempting given my weapon situation, although the prospect of going down there scares the hell out of me (I poked my head in there once on some previous character and noped out in pretty short order once I saw the second floor).

I would use the demon whip. Probably clear Crypt with Undeadhunter first, though, unless you want to skip Crypt. Fairly easy xp, which will go a good long ways toward making Haste usable.

Haste is still easily reachable even without downgrading your armor. You just have to put more xp into charms. Figure 18 levels or so if you aren't planning to use wizardry permanently, give or take; it's no wonder you're not getting results with just 6.9 charms.

A 3-Rune win should be in reach even if nothing good happens the rest of the game.

I don't expect to be able to cast anything of note with 7 Charms now. I just figured that if it took around 12 Translocations to get just a mono-school level 2 spell reliable in this armor, getting a level 6 spell was a pipe dream. I have no experience casting in anything heavier than fire dragon armor, though, so I'm not great at estimating this sort of thing.

I'm also worried about getting hit by some bit of minor stat degen, going below 23 strength, and having my spells instantly tank. Being shackled to my +3 STR gloves is a nuisance too, although I guess it doesn't really matter until I find something substantially better.

Fortunately 23 str isn't a magic number anymore (when it was a magic number, it was 24)! Do raise Str on your remaining level ups, though.

I don't like using a demon whip of not-offense that only heals you a little bit some of the time and also makes curare/rods worse, after you already have 20 maces skill. I'd stick with great maces (check for other brands, though).

Note that you don't have 8 enchant armour scrolls, you have 5 - put three into your aux armour.

Crystal Plate Mail has an encumbrance of 23. Doesn't that mean there are huge casting penalties for being below that in strength? I thought I saw my casting percentages skyrocket when I went from 22 to 23, but then again was training armor skill at the same time.

I'm a little wary of spending scrolls on my cloak and regular boots and then having the enchantments blown off by Brown Ugly Things or the Slime Pits (eventually). Given that I have 46 AC already, I figure I can afford to be at least a little bit conservative.

What brand on a Demon Whip, if any, would it take to make it better my Great Mace? Or a similar Great Mace with a relevant brand, if I choose to enchant a new one. Would it have to be Electrocution, or are Demon Whips considered to be superior in general? I've been sticking to two-handers for warrior-types and I don't really know how delay vs damage shakes out in a practical late-game environment.

No. Armor penalty is (armour constant)*(45 - skill)/(str + 3). You get less of a reduction with each point of str, though that reduction might still be big for heavy armour.

You can infallibly change the color of an ugly thing with a wand of poly, and shouldn't really go to slime with no rCorr.

Vamp is really good, though two-handers are much stronger in general. Considering 20 m&f I'd go dwhip only if I had a very good shield.
