CIP Newbie looking for tips

I'm rather new to this game, and I just cleared the lair for the first time ever!!, I was wondering what to do next? Should I go find orcish mines?, I got destroyed the one time I tried to go in there after only doing a couple floors of lair. I have a bunch of spellbooks, but not really sure which are the good mid-tier spells to learn.

First off, take any advice i give with a grain of salt. I'm not really all that good at the game, either, so a lot of what i say might just be regurgitated by actual professionals. Second off, i think there are ways to hide that wall of text - i used spoiler tags, which i think isn't the right thing to do, but maybe someone will come along and correct me on what standard procedure is. :p

As far as advancement goes: You managed to clear the entire lair, including L:8? Because L:8 is significantly tougher than L:1-7, so if you've done that then you're probably stronger than you think you are. (Don't let that get to your head; overconfidence has killed me loads of times, and i'm sure i'm not alone in this). Still, going through orc:1 and orc:2 should be safe - possibly orc:3. orc:4 is also rather significantly hard, though, so i wouldn't touch it until you're strong enough to grab a rune (which could be a while). If you're not sure about the orcish mines, you could either:

A. Go back to the main dungeon and descend until the monsters start feeling dangerous again, then move to a safer level and reconsider your options, or
B. explore one of the side-branches in the lair.

As far as the side-branches go, i think you got fairly lucky: blasters can clear out most of the spiders before they get to you, and melee characters can have a hard time closing in on merfolk and their ranged attacks - something wizards don't have to worry about. That being said, branches are still dangerous, so i'll say it again: don't get overconfident. Crawl is a cruel, cruel mistress. :( Between the two, i'd probably pick the shoals, since not having RPoison makes the the spider's nest dangerous - even for wizards. If you ever feel like things are getting too intense, backtrack and go somewhere that feels more comfortable.

As far as spells go: you have flight, and you have haste, so you're being smart. If you didn't have haste, i'd tell you to get spider form right away - it's potentially a life-saver. Haste covers most of that function already, though, so if you want to save the spell levels, you can skip it if you want to. (i'd still recommend it, though, if you run out of mana to cast the former but have just enough for the latter). Apart from that, more blasts is always good - Delayed Fireball is nice to prep in case of emergencies, and Ring of Flames can help you deal with pesky melee attackers (it should certainly make spiders easier, in case you get cornered), so i'd train both conjurations and fire magic (oh, and if you get it - fire storm is apparently some of the best stuff around in the late game). continuing to train air magic might be a good idea, too: Tornado is basically Ring of Flames on MASSIVE steroids.

What to do next:
I'd head to Orc next. Having cleared all of Lair, you'll be fine. Prepare to do some stairdancing as you enter each floor to clear out the area around the stairs, then explore in concentric circles so you don't get surrounded in the open layouts. Orc:4 is really not that much harder if you're careful about it. There are different layouts for the end vault, but the baddest baddies are always clustered in a fairly obvious fortification of some kind -- just avoid it until you've cleared out the rest of the level, then draw folks out of the vault one at a time. Beware of Knights, Warlords, Sorcerers and especially High Priests.

Clearing Orc:4 also has the advantage of giving you a bunch of shops and the gold to buy from them, which is a good advantage to have as you head to the Lair branches.

Do not go to Elf.

Spider will probably be a bit easier than Shoals, but do some more Dungeon first and then explore carefully in either. rPois is not a requirement for Spider, but it does make things easier.


Equipment:
I would not walk around using an un-ID'd amulet, especially when you have Conservation. Nothing else will be as useful at this point.

Unless you grab some Fire spells, the Ring of Fire is only serving to swap rF+ for the rC+ from your dagger. But in the absence of many other rings, that's actually pretty useful. For Orc (and anywhere except Spider at this point) I would swap out Sustenance for Protection from Cold so you have both elemental resists.

Extra AC is a priority. If there are multiple plain cloaks or caps/hats/helmets lying around the dungeon (check with CTRL-F), try them on -- they might have +1 or +2 enchantment. Look for boots too in case you missed them. Use any Enchant Armour scrolls on those peripheral armour slots.

Look for a buckler but don't bother enchanting it.

Be aware that the Robe of Augmentation will eventually wear out its usefulness, but for now it's probably the best option.


Spells:
Honestly, with the exception of Orb of Destruction you have just about all the spells you'd need for a 3-rune game (dMsl, Haste, Battlesphere and IMB will take you a long, long way). Anything else you get will just make certain situations easier. Don't waste your energy thinking about level 9 spells (Tornado, Fire Storm) at this point.

Fireball is great against high-EV enemies like spiders and merfolk, and for clearing out crowds like in Orc. But remember that it's pretty noisy and will attract attention.

Poison Cloud/Ignite Poison would be a fun combo for Spider.

Other spells I'd pick up the moment they appear: Blink, Regeneration, Sublimation of Blood, Apportation.

You can stop training Spellcasting, now that your spells are all (as good as) hungerless. ### hunger is quite manageable even for spells you use a lot. You've probably trained enough Charms, too. The XP would serve you better in defensive skills and maybe Fire magic at the moment.

A few (5-10) levels of Armour should give you a boost of +1 or +2 AC, which you sorely need.

When you find a buckler, grab 5 shield skill to eliminate its penalties.

Thanks! I went and cleared out Orc, which was surprisingly easy except for Saint Roka who I ran oom trying to kill twice, finally burned two scrolls of summoning, and used airstrikes while he was surrounded by a mob of my orcs (He still nearly won >.>).

No bucklers, or boots anywhere so far, upgraded my hat though, and the amulet was resist mutation. At the shops, the three interesting things are a +4 rC++ artifact armor, for about 2300 gold, an {AC+4 Str+4} ring for 830, and a {+Inv rPois rF+ rC+ SInv} ring for 1000

I'll probably poke around the dungeon a bit now, before checking out a lair branch.

Buy either both rings or the armour - you didn't say what kind of armour it is. Money is there to be spent. Probably the rings are better.

If you stay with that robe, try on the shield and see how your spells look - should be very usable with even a little shield skill. (If you wear heavier armour the shield will need more skill).

Do you mean the shield will need more than 15 skill, or just that one could get by with less skill (and small shield penalties) in lighter armour? I assume the second, unless there's been some change to shield penalties I don't know about.

The shield brand is almost certainly Reflection, btw. Which sounds cool (and it is cool when an enemy one-shots itself), but is the subject of much derision by Tavern vets. Probably not worth dumping 15 levels into at any rate -- I'd probably stop at 5 shields and if the penalties weren't hampering me too much, use it until a buckler spawned.

Go for the rings, especially that second one. If the armour's on the lighter side and you have extra cash later you can see if it's worthwhile, my guess is it won't be.

Shield was +0 Shield of Nihilism and lets me invoke invis, got the rings, is the Bailey worth checking out? (I found it right away after going back to dungeon)

Yeah, the bailey's worth checking out, just be ready to get right back out again if it looks ugly. They seem to vary pretty widely in difficulty, from kobolds throwing tomohawks to orc knights with crossbows.
