CIP - advice needed --Troll monk of Qazlal

So, here he is: i used the random viable character option and took whatever came up - first time with a troll monk.

I am running into trouble with Snake:5 and have cleared lair and orc mines -- not sure here to put skill points/ what to do next. Advice?

I would train Fighting to about 15, then Armour to 3.2 (it will give AC 1), would wear +0 cloak if possible.
Not sure about where to go, I've heard Qazlal attracts half level to position of character and Tr really needs long battles with many retreats to take advantage of increased regeneration and in order to not die because of low defenses

I'd make training fighting your first priority. It will give you more hp, and since if you run out of hp you die, it's a good thing to have. As an additional bonus, training fighting will up your base damage and accuracy some. I'd train it to at least 10. After that, a small investment in stealth could be useful, even with the negative apts. (I actually don't know trolls well, so sorry if I'm wrong about this, but you are wearing armour with low encumbrance anyway, so I think it would work.) Also, if you're using throwing as your secondary form of attack (which it looks like you are), it makes sense to train throwing.

As far as surviving Snake:5, don't be afraid to use your potions (hw, might, agility, invis) and scrolls (fear, fog, tele). Try to lure enemies from packs and take them on individually. Take it slow and cautious.

Oh right, you're with Qazlal, who from what I've heard makes it impossible to be stealthy. Scratch that then.

Yeah, Qazlal makes stealth impossible -- And it does seem to drawl 1/3 - 1/2 the board to you.

But, i think the resistances make up for it - and the attacks are nice.

Quick question: what about shields?

I read that it prevents off-hand attacks....iconsidering Qazlal gives SOME shielding anyway, is it worth it?

Yes, shields will prevent off-hand attacks, and give various other penalties until you've trained the Shields skill high enough. However, as a troll, you can wear a buckler without penalty (except loss of aux attacks) at 0 skill. So, if you've found one of those, especially if it has some useful enchantment, I'd wear it. Otherwise, I'd wait until your other defensive skills--Fighting/Armour-- are trained sufficiently high before considering it.

Tr cannot wear buckler. Similarly Sp cannot wear normal/large shield.

My bad! I was misinterpreting what the "--" under shield penalty for bucklers as a Troll meant on learndb.
