This doomed SOB has had some incredible luck with items. First I found Hellfire in an ice cave. That was pretty interesting run as a Lava Orc and almost died to the finals Ice Giant. Scroll of Immolation saved me just barely. :P I was looking for a good 2h sword before ditching shields, so I could use the crossbow when I aquired a vampiric bastardsword. At that point I was not totally convinced that I would not want to use the crossbow as backup, untill I found the Shield of Resistance. With a vampiric bastardsword and that shield I have decided to let the Hellfire slide, atleast until much later. I also got boots of running. :) I am having a serious God complex atm which will probably get me killed.

I am wondering about the amulet, if having -int (int is 5 with it) is tolerable? I got Gourmand in my stash which might make switching away from vampirism time to time feasible. I am getting ahead of my self thinking about extended, but should I prepare to abandon vampiric brand at any point? How about skil training? Any suggestions on how not to die a stupid death with all these items?

-5 int hamper quite a bit spells casting, but you could remove your amulet when using buffs if you can bear that. Other than that, no, it gives no penalties (so for now there are no problems for your char)
I would stop to train dodging for now, training armour gives better results if you're sticking to plate armour. Get at least 20ish armour, then decide what you want to get first, spells or dodging (I'd go with haste before dodging).

Stop raising str on level up - you're *far* over the point it gives significant bonus when wearing plate - and raise dex (if you're planning to invest on dodging) or int (10 int is enough to cast buff spells in plate, but I prefers something around 14ish to have better spellpower and less exp needed for casting them).
Identify that wand and enchant the bastard sword at least to +5 (I'd put all enchant scrolls on it, unless you have another good sword as backup for nonliving target).

Also you can use crossbows one-handed, each shot just takes longer, although swapping back and forth with vampiric weapons also requires food use, and you have Qaz for ranged attacks, so it may not be relevant for this char.

But for future info, crossbows aren't good primary weapons when used with a shield, but as a "something to plink critters at range until they can get close enough for me to bash them in melee" a crossbow with a shield is fine, and of course hellfire bolts are super excellent.

As someone just mentioned and from what I just learned - Strength is damn near worthless aside from carrying capacity. Dexterity is far superior and gives more value boosting your evasion with dodging. I rather have 34 dex and 13 str on that character if not for the fact I would only be able to carry armor. The melee level 27 im playing right now has 40+ evasion with 40 AC. If I only pumped strength my EV would probably be half of that. The best kind of damage to take is no damage.

Dexterity suffers several step downs at different values. I believe one rather major cut off is around 24 or maybe 26 dex. You still get value from dex after that point but it is diminishing returns.

Strength is quite important for many ranged combat users, though this is in flux right now in Trunk as lots of changes to ranged combat are being experimented with.

For some characters, wearing certain gear, strength may be almost worthless.

The only stat that is ever completely worthless, aside from "having just enough that I won't get stat drained really easily," is intelligence. If you aren't casting spells, its only purpose is to buffer you against brainlessness.

It seems the diminishing returns hit strength sooner. The wiki says having the same strength as encumberance rating is the cut-off, but with armour trained to 27 it makes it even lower.

As usual, the wiki is wrong. (In this case, both wrong in terms of game mechanics, and wrong in terms of the advice given/implied by the information.)

To clarify: There aren't cut off points. You will get diminishing returns as your strength begins getting much larger than the encumbrance, but exactly where this happens varies a great deal and there is no neat break point. If you are in plate, let's say, then there is a very large range of values for which strength and dexterity give very nearly the same benefit in terms of EV, though your exact dodging/armour training will shift that around, too (which is what makes it difficult to give a simple answer). However since strength also mitigates spell casting penalty of armor in this case, that would be better way to go if you are casting spells.

Strength does increase damage output of melee somewhat and can increase damage output of ranged combat considerably. It isn't a good idea to raise strength *solely* for the purpose of increasing your melee damage output, but this effect does make increases in strength considerably more useful than "worthless." The same cannot be said of, for instance, increases to intelligence on a character that is not casting spells and already has the modicum of intelligence stat needed to avoid unreasonable risks of brainlessness.

This is hardly scientific, so take it with a big spoonful of salt, but the general heuristic I usually apply (based on experience not number crunching fwiw):

But in terms of sorting out their competing effects, I think the above is a fairly accurate heuristic for non-endgame skill levels. You may end up being off the optimal allocation by a point, but you will be close. (Haven't tested with small/large species or wizardry boosts so not sure if the generalization will hold in those cases.)

So what I get from this is, that I have enough strength for the rest of the game and should try to get some more Dex. Also I need to be careful with int. -3 from amulet is no big deal unless I get drained. Thanks for the feedback! I can't wait to get back to playing. Too bad I have very little time for that lately...

I now have cleared Lair, Orc and the Dungeon with no effort. My latest find is this: the +27 shield of the gong {rElec rN+ MR+ EV-5} Looks extremely good, except for the EV-. With this my EV would be 3. How ever my SH value would be sky high. Should I be seriously considering this? It does give rN+ which I lack more than what I get from my current shield and rElec migh be better to have reliably rather than hoping for the passive to trigger. I am also a bit annoyed that I do not have rPoison, now that I am otherwise ready for Snake/spider. (I got both, other is a mimic, don't know which one.)

The gong is one of the loudest things in the game. You shouldn't use ever it, unless you enjoy the idea to lure everything is big angry and dangerous to your position at once, just some turns after entering a level

To be fair gong's drawback is noticeably less significant when you're making half-gong noise every single turn simply by existing (thanks q)

that said shield of resistance is probably still better than gong since shield of resistance is nutso good

I already make so much noise with my storm that the gong would just make me look awesome. :) I shall stick with the resistance shield for now. Maybe I try out the gong on Vaults 5. ;)

Fwiw* I wore the gong on my first ever win: bought it in a shop on D24 (this was back in the day...) and wore it through the rest of the dungeon and all through Zot. It was only a +6 shield back then so obviously it's been improved since then.


* Of course it's not worth much, since a single instance of something proves only a limited amount.

I killed all the baddies and snagged the orb. In fact it was simpler than usual because I just waited in a narrow corridor near the lungs of the orb chamber and waited for baddies to appear in a slow trickle - which I found preferable to doing what i usually have to do, i.e. having to run into the lungs and out again repeatedly trying to draw monsters out a few at a time without getting surrounded.

Which is not to say I recommend using the gong, just that it worked on that occasion.

Zot:5 actually is not usually such a bad place for being noisy, for the most part. Of course I'd rather not be noisy there, but it isn't as bad as you might think. All three staircases are guaranteed to not be in the area with a high concentration of tough enemies (the "lungs"), and the main thing with being really noisy is that staircases become (even more) extremely valuable.

(I haven't cleared Zot:5 with the gong before, but I have with Qazlal, and it wasn't bad. Swamp:5 was much worse for my character [when I was doing it] and I didn't even try Vaults:5, went slime instead since I had rCorr.)

I have updated the morgue in the first post.

So far there have been no hard branches and only a few battles where I was struggling. These were mostly situations that could have been avoided with better positioning. My biggest concern is lack of see invisible and my vampiric sword. I got rPoison from depths, which would have been nice in spider, but was not necessary. (Spider was even easy)

What should I do about my weapons before extended? I got one brand weapon scroll, a large stack of enchant scrolls, a demon blade of flaming +3 +2 and a scimitar of holy wrath. I could try and rebrand my bastard sword or demon sword, though I am not sure which one would be wiser to risk. I would be left with the other if the weapon is ruined. I would then enchant it as high as possible.

Also, which armor should I choose. I have not yet found a wand of tp or haste, so I might want to get some spells. I got hides for all higher dragon armors, except for pearl.

One interesting thing about Qazlal is that Upheval gets wider range with Invocations skill, thus making it really good alternative for non casters.

At sufficient skill bastard swords and demon blades are almost identical in terms of damage (Demon blades require less skill and are superior prior to getting min delay on a bastard sword, once you have the skill available it doesn't matter)

Vampiric is a useful enough brand in enough places that I'd probably keep it around and rebrand the demon blade (flaming isn't a bad brand at all, but in the areas you're worried about, freezing or elec would be slightly better)

Even if you don't get an optimal brand, the base damage from either weapon will do just fine (There's nothing wrong with beating the game with a venom weapon even when things are poison-immune, it's certainly not required to have an optimal brand to win the game, particularly if it's well enchanted and of a good base type.)
