YAVP 5 Rune MfIE of Veh. Take Two!

I decided to have another go at a MfIE after splatting in the orb vault last time. I just cleared Lair, other than the Hell vault crawling with demons-- no thanks. This guy feels like he's coming together well. All spells from the starting book are up and running, defenses buffed, and trident at mindelay. Actually, I had all that by mid-Lair, so when I came across a book with Haste in it, I started dumping xp into Charms, and now have that as a fairly reliable panic button/power up. I know that's a lot of experience to spend at this point in the game for one spell in a school that's not one of my major ones, but I figured it was worth it since Haste is OP.

Vehument has been fickle with his spell gifts, nothing so far in the Ice school.

I've been practicing better nutrition management after having no food left last game by the time I hit the last floor of Zot. I think the problem was I had been used to playing a beserker where it makes sense to keep nutrition status above Very Hungry and there's no spell hunger. So now that I'm allowing my self to dip to near starving before consuming permafood, things are much better. I've got a good supply of food deposited in my stash besides what I'm carrying in the dump.

Like I said, the last character was the first time I was dealing with a spell-caster, who deplete nutrition faster, and I had been accustomed to burning permafood at higher levels of nutrition so that I could beserk. Also maybe I should have trained spellcasting higher? Anyway, I'm not having problems now, I'm just stating how I'm adjusting from my previous go at playing this build.

I think the only spells in Ice you can get from Vehumet that you didn't start with are: Bolt of Cold, Freezing Cloud, Ozocubu's Refrigeration, Glaciate. So three L6s and an L9. You should be willing to take some other good and suitable spells.

Orc and the remainder of Dungon traversed. This MfIE has ended up more casting-heavy than my last go, mostly due to not finding an awesome polearm, not being forced to switch to Lugonu (and so getting Veh's spells), and getting various spell-friendly equipment (hat of Pondering, staff of cold). Yay for a more flexible build than MiBe, which I understand is just about everything, but still is new for me. This game the RNG has also been ridiculous in giving me artefact jewelry--besides what's currently in my inventory, there's a shop with the ring of Shaolin (AV+8) that I will nab as soon as I can afford it. Progression has been smooth so far, no real death risks other than moments of my own laziness in letting me hp get loo low before hasting and running from a fight.

I'd be interested in hearing people's thoughts on what spells to aim to pick up next--I currently have icicle at 1%, and freezing cloud and bolt of cold at 5%. Obviously, I'd like those last two down to 1%. But after that, Veh's given me his last, way too high level spells, so I'm looking over the options from the books in my stash. Options I'm considering: Deflect Missiles, Is's Battlesphere, Dispel Undead, Simulacrum. Deflect Missiles I think is a definite, and I already have training in the right areas. I know IB is awesome in the early game from trying a few Cj, but is it worth it in mid to late game? Last, I'm tempted to go into Necro to get Dispel Undead as a way to handle liches for the end game. I could then pick up simulacrum as a more powerful summons than my current ice beasts. But that's a lot of skill investment for 1-2 spells that I could be spending on buffing defenses.

Also, is there a consensus on how much spellcasting a conjurations-oriented character needs? Do people generally just train enough to acquire the spells they want, or do they continue to train after? If so, how much in comparison to, say, one's primary spell school?

Battlesphere will still be good. One cast can do damage than comparable spells (compare potential damage/mana spent ratio to icicle). You don't need necromancy just for dispel undead, good melee is enough for liches. However, simulacrum is very strong, so it doesn't sound like a bad idea. Your defenses are pretty good, but raising dodging a bit more, as you are doing currently, is a good idea. On that note, your fighting isn't very high so you should probably work on that in the near future.

Spellcasting is mostly important for the spell slots. You are unlikely to run into hunger problems with any character, you generally have enough MP as a Vehumet follower, and you generally train spell schools to reduce failure rates. Considering that you want to pick up additional high-level spells (DU, Simulacrum, etc), you will definitely have enough spellcasting if you just train it to get enough spell slots.

Is the utility value of Animate skeleton getting an extra ally? I've never tried it.

Sadly, no book with Regen found as of yet.

Also, re: the recent discussion of ghost moths, I fought two (separately) going through Spider:1-4. Meh--they're tough, but not awful. The first time I was fighting a couple other spiders and got all my MP drained before I realized what was happening. I quaffed haste immediately and started melee-ing it, then also quaffed might when I got below 100 hp, and finished the fight at 89/133 hp.

Yes, Animate Skeleton is for extra ally (and sometimes for Sublimation of Blood during fight). Even weak ally can block banish/paralyse/malmutate or just allow you to flee. Venom Bolt, Bolt of Draining, Airstrike, Portal Projectile, Freezing/Poisonous Cloud are great with undead allies.

Yes, AC 27/EV 25 make Ghost Moths not that dangerous.

Here are some Animate Skeleton reasons:
1) It's level 1 so you can cast it in practically anything and learn/keep it for practically free.
2) The ally's strength scales with how strong the monster was, so it scales with how dangerous the floors get.
3) Skeletons never time out, they don't regenerate HP but you can keep them around for a long time and they accumulate into piles that can gang up on enemies for you, absorb hits when you want to flee, etc.
4) If you use it on a corpse, you get the chunks, so it's faster and safer than butchering.

Spider and Shoal runes pillaged, Vaults 1-4 clear. Most of this has been steady going, my only real moment of panic was while running away from a pack of spiders coming out of the rune vault, when one of them stepped on a zot trap and I became paralyzed. :shock: I had sorta known that enemies can trigger Zot effects on the player, but this was first I'd, uh, seen it in action. So I got to watch in horror, turn by turn, as the pack beat me down to about 30 hp. Fortunately my character snapped out of it in time to read a blink scroll, and the upstair was in sight.

Shoals was memorable mainly for a kindly Merfolk Impaler bequeath me a demon trident of electro on the first floor, and then finding a buckler of protection further on to pair with it. :)

Pretty much all the major spells I wanted I have up and running. Having both haste and regen makes it easy to get out of situations if they turn hairy. Casting freeze cloud on enemies and then summoning a pack of troll/ogre/giant simulacra is fun, especially in Vaults, with all the small rooms. I just noticed a shop has a book with Animate Skeleton, so I will definitely pick that up as well.

Is it worth picking up Deflect Missiles for a character with high EV(40)?

With spells taken care of and weapon at mindelay, I've been pumping all my xp into Fighting and Dodging. Will I get value out of training Armor if I'm only wearing leather?

Wow, Animate Skeleton is OP, especially combined with Freezing Cloud. My only question is-- (how) does one still try to take on enemies individually with it? My shambling pack of undead tends to pick up enemies' attention, and when it does, it shambles toward them, waking up whatever else was with them. Not that this is too much of a problem, seeing as I can just support them with Cloud and/or come in with melee, but am I just forced to take on packs at a time? I understand that I can shout orders, but shouting.

You probably don't want to wear slowhat, it's a pretty bad item. You need MR, but I would replace "Heesouru" with a ring of magic resistance and call it a day.

Sar, will you explain a bit more? I understand being slightly slower than a regular speed enemy makes it hard to get away, but I have haste for that. I figured the MR, extra AC, and bonus to intelligence was worth the trade off. Also, I'm getting the sense from your recommendations that stat bonuses aren't that useful?

+stats are good of course but how good depends, and in any case it is a question of cost vs. benefit.

You are in leather armor, so the strength bonus (from ring) isn't doing a lot for you. You also have a ton of dexterity, so much so that you are getting diminishing returns due to stepdown; that bit of extra dex from the ring is helping but really it is probably just +1 EV, and you could train a bit more dodging and be exactly where you are now without the ring. The +int from ring and large (+5) int boost from the hat is good and helpful, but you have all spells at low failure and really good power, and probably still would even without the hat.

In any case, I don't think a bit of AC, +int and +MP, and MR+ are worth the penalty to movement. However since this guy has haste you could wear it and still be ok, and maybe you would not even feel that much weaker. But I agree with Sar nonetheless; personally I wouldn't use hat of pondering on this guy, the penalty to move speed still makes you more vulnerable and more reliant on casting haste or using consumables to retain control of combat. I would value control over your positioning very highly, and thus I wouldn't consider the bonuses to be worth the drawback.

The bonus armor at this point is not nearly as important as getting better resistances. Given you're over 40 EV, not much is going to hit you. The int bonus is maybe going to increase your fail rate by 1% and a very slight increase in hunger costs. MP +9 doesn't matter since with it you're at MP cap, and without it it you're at, what, mid 40s for MP. The only thing useful is the MR+ but IMO it doesn't negate the ponderousness.

In other words, the benefits of the hat don't really outweigh the negatives.

As for stat boosting, stat points have much less of an effect than skill points. Unless you have a lot of stat points like a Chei build, the effect of +3 to a stat isn't that great, maybe giving you one more EV, one more point in melee damage, and a very slight improvement in hunger/cast rate.

I'm with the above two. Even a +2 helmet would be a better choice than the hat.

Same way as before - walk away. You can do tf to get your animated dead to follow you or just leave them behind to die if you don't care much. Once you've walked far enough such that the noise is well outside of your LoS, then the monsters are as good as pick-off-once-at-a-time-able once more. (this is why the noise you made with tf doesn't matter if you run well enough!) (Note that wandering monsters won't shout if you attack them first before they notice you!)

Alright, I traded the Ponderous hat for a helmet of fire resist that I had in my stash, and enchanted that up, giving me more AC and a bit of resist, in addition to all the reasons to ditch the artefact hat you all have mentioned.

Just grabbed my third rune, from Vaults. I really screwed myself at the beginning of Vaults:5, reading immolation with too many enemies on screen once I was in a corridor, then having some of them get proximate to me... yeah. So I hasted away, and after that pinballed around the level for a bit, trying to find a corner to rest and recover safely in. But once I finally found one, the rest went smoothly.

The RNG this game really wants to push my EV to the max. First the ring of Shaolin, now Vaults:5 had fencer's glove. I also have amulet of the air that put on occasionally with Titans for the rElec, and that sets my EV over 50. :D

This char. feels stronger than my last run, but I think I'll just go for my 3 runes and out this time. I'm ready to move on and try something new. Any suggestions for things to skill/find equipment for before trying the Orb Run?

Re: CiP MfIE of Veh. Take Two!

I changed my mind and grabbed the runes from Slime and Abyss. Slime did some damage to my AC even with a cloak of preservation, but also got me a wand of hasting, finally. Abyss was kinda ridiculous--the portal into the third level placed me right next to the rune vault. Sliced through a queen bee and I had it.

And ascended! Took out a. liches with haste+dispel undead, running away if they summoned demons. For OoFs, I used mana vipers for antimagic, then just killed them with my trident (plus haste and regen). I got a stairwell right next to the vault entrance, making it easier than usual to run out of the chamber when pursued, up the stairs, and back down another to isolate enemies. Somehow even with rMut I end up sprouting a whole host of nasty mutations during the ascent--maybe from hasting while contaminated a few times?

On the whole, I really love the variety of options MfIE gives. I found myself switching several times throughout the game between primarily using spells or melee to kill, depending on what I had found and where my skills were. While MiBe is for sure easier to play and to learn tactics with, a more flexible character feels stronger by the end because you have more ways to kill others and keep yourself alive.

Much thanks to all who advised along the way.

I'm not really sure what build I want to try next, I may just let the game decide at random so I can try a variety of races/starts out. Unless--anyone want to suggest a fun/challenging/interesting build??

You can see in your morgue file source of mutation (magic contamination, OoF, neqoxec etc.) something like
