Where I Try To Win With a Draconian Summoner

So while, I have gotten close a few times I have yet to succeed at winning, due to a combination of dying in Zot and trying out the extended game before actually winning a 3 rune win. I have actually been doing generally worse lately though I am not sure it is due to my skills atrophying from a break or if the game has changed enough when I play.
So as of now I am trying to win with a Tengu Summoner. There are a few reasons for that. The first is simply that I like the idea of warrior-mages and tengus seem pretty geared for it. (Along with High Elves). I also like the idea of Tengu in general, though my attempts with the Air Elementalist have been less then exciting due to my poor ability to produce double bounces. So a Summoner seems like it could be fun. Summon an army of minions, wield a good melee weapon, and kill things seems like a reasonable strategy though I have not been able to make it past XL 10 so far.
So I am going to use this thread to keep track of my characters and experiences so far. Every time I either get a character farther than before, or suffer YASD I am going to post the character here and hopefully either get some advice or gain some personal insight into why I am failing.
Edit: Based on the suggestions herein, I think this is going to be focused on Draconian Summoners from here on out!

So the general strategy I have been following so far:
Basically learn the Summoning spells as I get them. I default to summoning as many small animals as needed to kill things on D1, but once I hit level 2 almost exclusively rely on Imps for monsters that I feel threatened by. I summon a hound if things get messy, and once I am able to get lvl 4 summons I get the lightning spire and use that when I am in an open area where it can attack effectively. Spells after that will depend on what books I pick up.
For skills, I go Summon until I hit level 10, then do a mix between spellcasting to reduce hunger costs, Dodge to not die, and Fighting to increase hp and general combat ability, a weapon skill if I have found a weapon that has convinced me to go in a particular path, or another spell skill if I have found an appealing book.
Goods are either Ash, Okawaru, or Vehemut depending on whom I find first, or Kiku if neither is the case and I have not found Ash. In case of a tie I go with Ash, mostly because I am less familiar with Ash and this gives me some good experience with the god.

Ice Beasts are amazing, do not ignore Ice Beasts. Get a bit of Ice to get them working earlier.
Veh is sorta useless for a Summoner. Try Kiku, Kiku is strong.

Alright! I will do Ice Beasts with my current character. I also just edited my post to add in Kiku in case I have neither a strong indication to go for spells or weapons and have not found Ash, as is the case for my current character that just hit the temple.
I like Veh simply because Tengu are good with Conjurations, and his steady supply of spells give you some alternative attack vectors.

Conjurations don't combine too well with Summoning since both spend MP. Choose one of them and specialize in it.

And my first death since starting this project. I thought this character was fairly promising, particularly with the sword I had found. While not something that is going to take me through the end game it was sufficient to ensure that I was comfortable binding it. Unfortunately, I made some poor choices (I went in the wrong direction and probably should have taken a potion of heal wounds), and was taken out by smite-happy orc priest.

And another promising Tengu Summoner cut down when I chose to run rather than use my healing capabilities to ensure continued life. I think perhaps I should be taking advantage of Fly a bit more often?

First death:
I would actually say that your biggest mistake was not using scrolls of identify to ID more of your consumables. That potion of invisibility could have saved you, and identifying scrolls of teleportation should be one of your top priorities early on.
Your skill training was reasonable, though I would have been training only ice and once ice beasts was down to ~12% failure and yellow/white, then I would switch to training only dodging for defenses for a while. Then weapon skill and fighting before getting more summoning spells. (Ice Beasts are really solid up to about Vaults. Lightning Spire is powerful and lots of fun too, though.)
Second death:
Orc priests are bastards. For everyone, but especially for low-HP species. You aren't supposed to kill everything you come across in Crawl. You have potions of invisibility and scrolls of teleportation and fear and the like for a reason. Use them and run away, come back and kick its butt later if you want vengeance. Running into an orc priest relatively early on a low HP character is about an order of magnitude more dangerous than running into a dragon much later on a level ~18 character. Use your consumables against tough stuff early or you will keep dying around D:7 to D:9.

1) Ah. Yeah, I am usually good about it. Carelessness.
2) Thanks! I am always uncertain about how much to push towards trying to conserve consumables vs. not. That is useful information.
Oh, and here is #3. This time I hit a particularly late/rough entrance to Lair and got owned by an old ghost of mine. Urgh. I was on my escape location too.
Further notes. I had a potion of heal wounds in my inventory. I also made a significant mistake early on level 11, namely I tripped a Mark trap and rather than immediately heading back to the stair up, I tried to run to a corridor. I got boxed in and had to use 4 potions of heal wounds and my only scroll of teleport to escape. If I had those potions of heal wounds (and well, used the one I had) I might have been able to get away from my ghost.

With Tengu, yes, you want to fly all the time basically because of the EV bonus. The only real downside of flying is the tediousness of renewing it (well, until you run into monsters with Airstrike). Thankfully, once you hit XL 15 you can just fly permanently.
Perhaps not the advice you're looking for, but I wouldn't recommend Te for someone who's still working on basic crawl tactics. Don't be fooled by the nice apts, the low HP hurts a lot more (I know this from having killed off dozens of tengu, ha). If you want to play a sturdy warrior-mage type as you stated in the first post, I'd recommend Draconian instead (high HP, built-in AC, and decent apts).

Don't fight player ghosts that have spells (xv them to check) (or draconian ghosts xl7 or higher because their breath is basically a spell) before clearing out lair, because their spells will be stupidly powerful and annihilate you (as you found out).

I did not actually try to fight it. I saw it as I was heading to the lair staircase and it killed me before I could get down, unfortunately.

When I said about not ignoring Ice Beasts, I didn't mean you should ignore Lightning Spire, it's a good spell too.
Training a spell school when you can cast all your spells is a bad idea, I usually train defensive skills as my "default" ones (Fighting, Dodging).
Also bardiche is probably too much for a ~hybrid~ that isn't a Merfolk, and HW is a worthless brand in normal game anyway.

Walking towards/through the LoS of something dangerous is just as dangerous as fighting it for the same amount of time. Maybe you should have kited it at the edge of LoS to another part of the level, then snuck around behind it to get to the lair entry (either by using a staircase to get elsewhere on the level or by taking a loop on the level)?

The game is taunting me with bardiches. Just found a +3, +10 one of chop and +Fly. Also a +2, +1 lajatang?
Also, found a potion of experience. These seem hyper-rare as I rarely seem to run into them. I still have not seen anything that screams "train me" as far as primary weapons go. I am guessing the potion of experience lets me hold off on that though. I am guessing I probably should hold off on making a decision until after I see what is in Orc: 4?

It has chop! and +Fly. So nothing super-exciting, but still solid. (Also found vampiric trident; I am guessing vampiric does not make up for the fact it is a trident.)
What wands should I be particularly interested? I know you want to have the big triad (healing, haste, and teleport) and I already have two of the three (healing and teleport). Does that change my decision structure at all?

You definitely want haste in some form, and wand is one of best forms. Vamp trident - you can make that work, but you probably don't want to bother. Lajatangs are a great ~hybrid~ weapon and you have one.

Alright this is where I am at now:
Possible weapons include the Lajatang +2/+1 with the goal of building towards the endgame, the +2/+10 bardiche of chop + Fly, and this +2/+1 eveningstar of protection I got off of Donald.
I also found the books of spatial translocations, the Necronomicon, the Book of Annhilations, and the Book of Power. The only thing remotely Summoning related I have found is a book with Summon Mana Viper. Which I know nothing about... (off to research).
None of these really scream at me if I want to focus on a hybrid summoner at the moment, so my current plan is to go with whatever weapon that the good people decide is my best bet and then focus on fighting skills until I find a book that lets me expand my summoning skills. I am going to use the scroll of acquirement for a wand and then the potion of experience to train staves to get the lajatang (or whatever weapon I am directed to) where it needs to be.
Next step will be to dive down into the Dungeon until the Depths and then I am going to try to deal with the Dire Elephants in Lair: 8. Then maybe Swamp?

Mana Vipers are fast and seem to do a lot of damage. But as a caveat, I rarely summon (I find it unfun in crawl), so I don't have a fully fleshed out opinion on that. They have anti-magic too; I got caught by Gastronok at about half of his LOS and nowhere to hide... so I rushed him down with mana vipers and had no problem!

I think that +10 vorpal bardiche is your best weapon, the kind of thing that would make me go "forget all that preconceived hybrid nonsense, I'll just melee everything to death from 2 squares away". Sometimes you just have to use what the game gives you.
Lajatang and eveningstar are both relatively low investment, high damage weapons, so if you plan to put lots of skill into the various magic schools, then these would be ideal. On the other hand, you'd need to invest significant time and resources (EW scrolls) to build either up to endgame quality, whereas that bardiche is already more than sufficient to win.
My personal preference would be to go the bardiche route. That won't leave a lot of spare skill points for spells, but IMO as long as you don't spread it too thin (by training too many schools) you should be ok. Ash's skill boost will be really helpful too.

I think what is going to really push me over the edge is the simple fact that I have not really found that many enchant weapon scrolls at this point. I only have 2 enchant weapon 1 scrolls and 1 enchant weapon 2 scrolls. (Also only 2 enchant armor scrolls, but as a draconian that is less relevant.)

...and I died. Found an Ice Cave filled with Blue Devils and Ice Devils and underestimated their threat level, because I have really only encountered them in the late game before. Used up all of my emergency buttons, and then when I went for the escape I thought they would not follow me out of the ice cave. I was wrong. I still managed to run/fight for a while, but eventually one of them got me.
Strategic mistakes I made:
1) I had two scrolls of recharging back in my stash. I had 3 charges in my Wand of Healing. Yeah, that should have been something that I did.
2) I forgot to use my scroll of acquirement to get a wand. Haste may have made me fast enough to flee from the situation.

You also had a pot of berserk in your inventory - if used at right time it could probably have saved your life.
But yes going in a ice cave without rc+ is doable but require extra caution. Especially with a Dr without rc, because it's going to be slowed by ice attack

The artifact trident has been pretty fantastic to me, but I suspect it is not going to be an endgame weapon.
Scroll of acquirement got me a wand of hasting, which I appreciate. I am following kiku because the Temple options were between him and okawaru, and for some reason Okawaru still does not seem quite right. Am I improperly gauging how useful he is for a Summoner?
So I guess the big question I have here is where to skill. I am thinking with Kiku since I am not going to even think about going for more than 3-5 runes that I probably just want to drive up my necromancy and use that to complement my summoning skills and eventually throw the pain brand on the best/fast weapon I can find? Or should I be doing something else?
I also have found waaay more books this time around, but nothing particularly Summoning-focused. Considering my Fire aptitude and the fact I have gotten a Book of Fire I admit I am pretty tempted to just learn spells to blow things up, but that seems like it may ultimately be counter-productive. Alternatively I can just focus on defensive skills until I see what is on Orc 4 and make my mid to end game plan based on that.

It's a heck of a weapon for D:4, and it will probably last you for a very long time.
Oka is fine for Summoners. Previously he penalized you for letting allies die, but that's gone now. Not that he has any particular synergy with summoning though. I've seen some people recommend TSO instead, since TSO extends ally duration presumably.

That sounds fine, but I would describe it instead as going Necro for your main school with Summoning for support. You have a lot of good Necro spells already. Agony + melee to take care of living enemies, Dispel Undead for the unliving, eventually Simulacrum will carry you through Zot.
I don't recommend going the blasty route when you're already with Kiku. At most bolt of draining, probably.

Yeah, I was pretty excited when I found it! Being able to hit people pretty damn hard over the heads of my minions has been very handy.
Should I hold off on weapon skills until I get an endgame weapon, or is it worth getting this trident to minimum delay? I know getting it to minimum delay will be (somewhat?) helpful now, but considering I do not know what sort of weapon I want to ultimately specialize in I would rather not waste experience on polearms.

I'd say go ahead. As you say, Polearms are useful for hitting stuff through your minions. That's going to be true all the way to end game. Plus Kiku gives you flexibility - you can choose what type of weapon to pain brand, so you're not reliant on RNG giving you the right type of weapon.

What sort of polearm should I be looking for? A bardiche appears to be unreasonable for a 3-rune victory as Draconian. Should I be trying to find a demon trident of some sort?

To pain brand? A spear is ok. If you can hold off until you get a demon trident though, then sure. IMO, your artifact trident gives you that option. Nowadays you can reliably get demon weapons in Depths from hell knight packs. Don't rush Depths before you're ready though, it's a dangerous place!

So on Lair: 8 a wizard sent me to the Abyss. I am doing okay so far, but clearly this is a very dangerous situation for me. I am guessing I should just keep running and generate new terrain until I find a way out and going deeper is a bad idea?

And I died.
For some reason me attempting to activate scrolls and wands repeatedly resulted in my turn being passed over... and I do not know why. I was not slowed and I could not see any real reason that it should have.
I think the biggest problem (beyond getting an unlucky banishment), was that when I had activated a teleport in the Abyss to get out of a dangerous situation. Then I found an Abyss gate out. I left the Abyss gate, killed the wizard, and was resting when it teleported me right into the next room. With all the demons. I might have been okay, but for two turns I tried to activate my scroll of controlled blinking and nothing happened, so all the demons were able to surround me and beat me to death.
What was going on there? Am I missing something? This was demoralizing enough that I think I am going to take a break.
Edit: Looking over my character dump, it seems that it was probably a combination of the negative mutations from a starspawn that got me. Blurry vision and teleporitis probably combined in such a way that I ended up getting fairly unlucky. Not sure what I should have done after I got out of the Abyss besides rest. What I should have done in the Abyss is to activate my wand of haste as soon as I saw the Starspawn and gotten my scaly tail out of there.

Yeah, it was the blurry vision 3 causing you to lose turns when reading scrolls. Wands should have worked though, but it looks like you were out of charges.
You also had teleportitis 1, which may have caused you to random teleport.
Resting won't cause temporary mutations to go away though, you'd need to gain XP for that.
If you'd realized you had blurry vision, probably you could have hasted to get away from the demons before they got you.
Getting banished could be in part bad luck, but as a summoner you could have used minions to block LOS.
Better luck next game. Unfortunately learning crawl basically means a series of incidents like this. Learn from your deaths, and move on.

Yeah, unfortunately when I teleported into the demons, I was essentially surrounded by them. I think I had one step that I could have taken that would have gotten me into a position where I could have potentially escaped, but I thought the game was glitching on me rather than realizing that I was dealing with blurry vision. I think this is mostly a lack of familiarity with the later parts of the game than anything else.
If I had bothered to pay attention to my mutations (I checked once and then did not again until after I died), I probably would have ran for Lair:7 rather than just rested on Lair:8. Everything else was cleared out and this would have given me an opportunity to at least get to a place where I could heal up before I continued on. Or maybe quaff a cure mutation potion, despite it causing me to lose my antenna and poison stinger.
And with the wizard, I am used to them being push-overs. I am not sure one has ever banished me to the Abyss successfully so I figured I could just tab it to death. Summoning some ice beasts would have definitely made the encounter completely trivial, but I did not think I needed them.
Lots of good lessons from this death. On to DrSu #3.

Alright, here is the latest one. Finished Lair, though the last level of lair required me to use a bit more of my consumables than I liked.
Things working in favor of this one:
1) Ring of Slaying +0, +6
2) I have wands of invisibility, healing, and teleport
3) Found the book of the Warp, and I hear higher level Translocations can be good. This also gave me a convenient path to my next summoning spell (Summon ForesT)
4) Rod of Clouds and Rod of Ignition. Are these worth pushing hard into evocations for? They seem fun.
5) Some sort of artifact ring of poison resist +2 Str +5 Dex. Not sure yet if it has other egos.
6) Built in sustenance due to an early Potion of Beneficial Mutation
Downsides:
1) No weapon of real note. I was using a +3, +6 spear for a while, but switched to this +3, +4 Scimitar of Flaming (right choice?)
2) I have used up a lot of my potions and have pretty low stocks at this point.
3) I am a mottled draconian, which seems strictly worse than most of the other draconian types.
So any suggestions? I am thinking of going with my previous route of going through Orc and then seeing what the shops have to offer. Also of note: I found an antiques shop that have an unidentified halberd and an unidentified war axe, both artifact. Are either worth taking a chance on?

Some more general comments:
1) Thanks for everyone's feedback and input. It has actually made this whole experience a lot more fun and I really appreciate the advice I have been given.
2) I am actually quite enjoying the Summoner playstyle, and like it more than say my recent attempts at playing an Air Elementalist. I had not played one until I started this thread and learning the vagaries of the various summonables has been enjoyable so far. I still haven't used the golem though. What situations make it worthwhile?
3) Draconians have also been pretty fun so far. I appreciate the flexibility inherent in them with their fairly neutral affinities though I think I would be hesitant to play an Elementalist as it seems too easy for the RNG to just randomly screw you. (Oh, you are an Ice Elementalist? lolz, you get to be a Fire Draconian).
4) I suspect I will be able to pull a win out of this character type eventually, once I get past making some of these mistakes I have been making. Playing the same character over and over again seems to be working from a get better at the game perspective, before I had a large number of splats and only a handful of characters that made the mid-to-late-game. Now I am making it to the mid-game pretty much every time. Its nice.

Flaming Scimitar is fine. Your potions look ok to me? Consumables are meant to be consumed. Mottled breath is really good, it's basically free sticky flame. You should be abusing it every fight.
Sure, do Orc next. Personally I wouldn't bother with those randarts - war axe and halberd aren't good base types. It's possible though that one of them is +10 or something which would make it worth using, so if you really don't have anything else to spend on, you could gamble on those.
I haven't quite figured out guardian golem either. Draconians are good all around, and stuff like DrIE turning out to be red isn't as bad as it sounds. -2 apt isn't that awful, your breath damages things which are cold-resistant and vice versa, and it's easy enough to shift to melee most of the time.

How can I ctrl-f "Sif" and not see anything in this thread outside of buddha's morgues? Sif is a great summoning god. I think the only time I wouldn't want to go Sif is if I was feeling like I wanted to build a "hybrid" summoner who spends as much time on the front lines with summons as backup, and while I think that's a cool and viable way to play the character, it isn't straight forward as summoning bros, channeling magic behind them, and summoning more bros, and repeating until you win the game.

Going through Orc seems like a grand idea. I would probably wait until after Orc:4 to take a chance on either of those artifacts, just so you can see what all your shop options are before you go splurging on artifacts that are probably crap. But, despite all the crap I just said about Sif, this character has a good shot at hybrid-y fun.
Those rods
are fun, but you can probably stop training evocations at 10 or so and never touch it again. I'd spend Orc getting Summon Forest online and putting some more levels in Air, because Lightning Spire is amazing. After Orc:4, which you might have to approach with ridiculous and extreme caution, if at all, at first, I'd give some serious thought about melee weapon selection. You have no melee weapon skill, and it might be a nice thing to pick up, what with your slaying ring and Ash helping you along; pick the most likely weapon and train the skill.

To be fair, these summoners are almost all worshipping Ashenzari, who is also a great summoning god, and they do seem to be hitting things, which is specifically the direction you would go with an Ash summoner.
Basically the gods who actually do something for summoners are very limited: Ash, Sif, TSO (and you can make a few others work, like Nemelex or Fedhas or Gozag, but they don't offer anything specifically good for summoner)

It is mainly useful for characters who summon things and then just sit there behind summons while they kill the monsters. It does a great job of making all your summons last longer, which is quite useful when it is your summons that are taking damage.
It is not so useful if you are up there next to monsters pressing tab, since 1) you will be taking more damage instead of your summons and 2) it might blow up in your face (literally).

Red drac IE is actually quite strong since you're still a draconian, your conj apt is still just fine (red DrIE has better apts than DsIE, which is perfectly fine), and you get a breath that wrecks everything. The only combination that would actually annoy me is white DrFE because white breath is underwhelming and boring.

Drache, I am always concerned that the splash is going to hit my dudes. But I will follow your advice and start using it more.
Also, I just picked up the game again after getting your advice and got the Book of Summonings. I am pleased. Now to decide to go for Shadow Creatures, which I can cast now with a 4% fail rate or should I wait a level and get Monstrous Menagerie, which has a much higher fail rate and probably needs a few more levels in Summoning (which I probably should be getting anyway, since I now have some better Summonings available.) And the Book of the Beasts. So I am pretty set. Any suggestions on which higher level Summoning spells are worth investing in?
archeo, that is a fair suggestion and does decrease the odds you will not end up with the higher level Summoning spells. I think noone mentioned it because I specifically mentioned my desire to play it as a hybrid. Besides Ash has been pretty awesome so far. I really like the extra information being provided and the curses haven't been nearly as annoying as I was concerned.
I plan on picking a weapon to train after I get through orc and see what my best available option is. I like to see what is available on Orc:4 before I make a final decision on caster characters who have some level of flexibility, like my Draconian. The only exception is if I end up with a good artifact or highly enchanted weapon earlier in the game.

On the plus side I was able to create some pretty fantastic kill zones on Orc: 4 which let me utterly destroy any and all attackers. The Summon Forest spell is everything I could hope and dream for (I did not realize Dryads were so bad-ass), and their were narrow corridors in the main base, which let me use combinations of the Summon Lightning Spire and Rod of Clouds to devastate the clumped orc groups, including some of the higher level ones. Anything that was able to get through this got hit by my sticky flame breath and died as I ran away from it. So yeah, not using my breath weapon much before was a pretty silly mistake.
On the down side Orc: 4 only had 2 spellbook shops, with nothing more interesting than what I ever have, a food shop, and a gadgets shop, with the only things of interest being a +6 rod of the swarm and a +0 rod of striking.
So I think my next step is probably just going to check out those two randarts and see if they have anything good. Beyond that I am not sure what to do about weapons training? Maybe finish out the Dungeon levels and see if there is anything interesting?

Well, use ctrl-f with, say, "sword && ego" or "mace && ego" and the like until you find something good, basically. I'm sure something nice has popped up by now, especially since you're using shields and want a good one-hander; if nothing better shows up, just focusing long blades may be the way to go, since you already have a branded scimitar that will do. On the other hand, with a rod of striking showing up, it's possible you should just start leveling staves, since you've already got a lot of evocations and could easily get more. An evo-focused staves guy may be just what the doctor ordered, especially with good summoning support and Ash boosting your skills.

Cool. What sort of staff should I push for (rod of striking needs mace & flails right)?
I have found earth, death, summoning, and air.
ego swords are mostly mostly long swords and great swords of holy wraths plus various short swords. The Scimitar of Flame is probably the best one I have found so far in the dungeon.
ego maces are just maces and flails of crushing
For axes we have a vampiric hand axe, a battle axe of freezing, and a war axe of crushing.
The two randarts were pretty bad, unfortunately. The halberd had good slaying but was pain and had teleportitis which is not worth dealing with.
So yeah, pretty suboptimal all around.
Also: Finished down to D:15 (which was much harder than D:14 and pretty much everything else since Lair:8). Now I need to decide between Depths (Haha! No.), Snake, Swamp, and the first few levels of Elf. I am guessing I should start with Swamp? The change in monsters from older versions is kind of throwing me for a loop with the lair branches to be honest. I remember Swamp < Snake < Spider < Shoal. Is that still true?

Rod of striking uses staves skill, but also relies heavily on evocations. I think min delay is 12 staves or so, double check that, but definitely stop at whatever min delay is, and then train evocations. You'd eventually want all the way up to 27, but that's obviously a huge investment, and is why the rod of striking isn't really used very often. Unless you're really trying to use the rod of striking, you might want something cheaper to get online. That said, you already have 11 evocations, and no other weapon skill, so if you have one (I don't see it in your inventory) it could be useful to you. Keep a quarterstaff/lajatang around for when the rod runs out of mana, which it can and will.
Lair branch order depends on your build and personal preferences. I love running spider with my mostly melee characters, and generally do that first, but I think most people here would say swamp is easiest. I can't really disagree with that, although I don't really like the new thorn hunters and floating lotus-whatever things. Between snake and swamp, they're about the same, I'd probably do swamp first, but either way you're probably fine.
