In terms of puzzling things about that character dump, I have to say the "four spells memorized, 22 spell levels available" took a very distant second place to the the 21 skill levels in Hexes at char lvl 13.

Let me start by saying that while I have 21 wins, they're all melee or ranged weapon users. I still have no clue how to play casters, especially Felids, which have a hard time in melee... I have to say, I loved Dazzling Spray and Fulminant Prism. Tried them for the first time. In the end I pretty much killed myself out of boredom though.

That 21 Hexes skill got there because I wanted to get 1% fail rate at my 2 hexes spells and the -1 Conj apt seemed abysmal in contrast to the +4 Hexes one. Sadly Vehumet doesn't seem to let you learn lots in terms of Hexes (If any) so I didn't learn any spells because I was pretty partial to Hexes. Wish I had found Tukima's Dance...

I could use some advice on how to play a proper conjurer. :D

Vehumet gifts conjurations, and a few non-conjuration strictly blasty spells, there are only two conjuration/hex spells, dazzling spray and fulminant prism, pretty much if it doesn't do direct damage to critters, Vehumet doesn't gift it.

Generally (And this is just a rule of thumb mind you, not fact) if you have a difference of 5 in aptitude between two skills of equal importance, they should probably be about 5 points apart.

Training to get to 1% failure on a conjuration is not a useful way to spend your XP, even if you didn't have any useful spells available to memorize (unlikely) you should've used the XP to increase your defenses or pick up some melee skill.

Finally just because you have a -1 aptitude in something doesn't mean you shouldn't train it, in fact it's perfectly viable to have your primary skill for killing things be a -1 in aptitude, it just takes a slightly longer to get things going. Best bet for a blasty mage type is to pick a decent attack spell and use it a LOT, dazzling spray isn't bad, but it's level 3, once you had a level 4-6 blasty spell offered, you should've picked it up and used it. Fulimant prism isn't a bad spell, but it falls more in the category of "interesting utility" than "Primary weapon"

Actually, the full blast from Fulminant Prism does really good damage even to a single target, enough to rely on it as a primary blast at low-mid levels, and it never misses. With practice, you can get the full blast reliably in a most cases, and even chain cast it.

The main drawbacks are that it is really, really loud, and it is not instant.

Of course, if you do rely on it as your primary, you'll still need something else for those situations where you can't get the full blast. And you will eventually want to upgrade, as it doesn't improve with spell power as well as the more traditional blasts.

Disclaimer: I'm looking at the 0.12 stats. I don't know if the damage got nerfed when it was changed to be a level 4 spell.

Learn battlesphere, learn mystic blast.
Do the obvious things, don't do really weird things.
If you want focus on hexes, start as an enchanter and don't pick Vehumet.

I'm not the best spellcaster either, but there's a few... things you definitely need to do.

1. Level your main spell skills until you can cast reliably (>10% or white text whichever you feel more comfortable dealing with)). If you have multiple schools for a spell e.g. Conj/Hex, put a few points in the secondary school (early game to Lair, about 5-10 depending on your final spell plans), though something like Dazzling Spray I wouldn't invest anything other than Conj.
2. The Spellcasting skill should only be leveled when you need more spell levels.
3. If you don't have any spells to learn in your chosen field, level your survival skills (Fighting, Dodging, etc.). Remember: Fighting for a caster is solely for the HP.
4. Know what restrictions to casting certain species and gods have e.g. can't use Regeneration on DDs or undead, Poison and TSO is not a good idea (or in your case Tukima's Dance because you need to have a weapon wielded to use it and felids can't).
5. Know which god does what for your various spells and builds.

Vehemet - Conjuration boosting only. Don't use something Translocations thinking he'll do anything to help you.
Sif Muna - Generalist caster. Guaranteed source of amnesia and channeling.
Kiku - Necro/pain weapon user. Also known as the free food fairy.
Ash - Skill boosting and foresight passives. Grants you the ability to respec if your spell skills becomes unviable e.g. Hexes around Vaults.


Also, as Siegurt pointed out, don't be afraid to pick up whatever spell Veh grants you. One of the benefits of Conjuration spells is that it crosses with all the major damaging elements, so if you get gifted something like Bolt of Cold pick it up.

One more addendum. Conjurers typically have the goal of one of each of the follow: One high-damage single target spell, one beam spell, one AoE spell, and one level 9 "kill every mofo in the room" spell.
