Taking a break from my endless attempts at DrSu, I decided to play a MfGl, and he has survived up through Orc:4. Now I actually have a fair amount of good choices for what to purchase.

Getting thrown in the Abyss is scary, fyi.

Anyway, I have 2487 gold and am trying to decide between the following purchases:

1) The +5 ring mail of follow the leader (Str+2, Dex +2, Dam +6) 1044 gold
2) The +5 ring mail of Trog's Brutal Revenge (cursed, rElec, RN+) 663 gold
3)the ring of Kerghi (rc++, rN) 623 gold
4) the ring of Robustness (AC+8) 1792 gold

My initial inclination is to go for the rings as Okawaru will probably give me a better set of armor eventually. Also I found a pearl dragon hide if that is relevant at all. Thoughts?

Yes, I would buy both rings and would enchant PDA. PDA is the best armour provided you have source of rF+ IMHO.

Okawaru will not give you better armour. But a PDA with decent enchantment is way better than those ring mails, so unless you have 0 enchant armour scrolls, just do that.

What armor skill should I have with the PDA?

PDA is good even with 0 Armour skill. But even as Mf I would train some Armour in PDA. With your current aux armour you will get (10+3)/22=13/22 AC per skill level in Armour, with helmet it will be 14/22.

Also, is a +6, +7 halberd (rCold, slay dragons) better than a +4, +1 halberd of electricity?

I spend a lot of time ring juggling during combat encounters, but I guess that is what it is.
I am trying to decide if I want to go all out on enchanting my current bardiche or not. Poison is not really that great of a brand for the endgame, but I do have that vorpal weapon scroll, and could just give it the generic brand.

Am I strong enough to take on Vaults:5 or should I hit the Crypt first/instead?

(I have found a source or rMut for my eventual trip to Zot:5).

Scroll of brand weapon can give any brand when used on already branded weapon, it can give even vamp/electro/holy.

If you enjoy Crypt, do it, it's much easier than Vaults 5.

I'm pretty sure brand weapon doesn't give: holy, speed, pain, distort. Not sure about anti-magic, either. 3 of those are strongly associated with gods who gift them, and I guess speed is considered to be too strong - then again, it does give you vamp.

Wow, Abyss:5. That was pretty brave. Though I suppose the character was strong enough. IMO you could have done Vaults:5 easily enough.

I think a bunch of those were temporary muts from wretched star, but yeah the log notes a couple of bad encounters with neqoxecs. What happened there? Even if you didn't bring rMut, careful play shouldn't have gotten you mutated that much.

I did not think to bring rMut. Essentially I did not do enough research into what I was going to have to deal with otherwise I would have bought the amulet before diving, and yeah in hindsight Vaults: 5 was probably a better choice. The only thing I had really had trouble with for a long time was Mara and one particularly scary curse skull.

In this case I was actually doing fine, until all my intelligence got eaten away. Better research on my part would have resulted in me wearing my ring of Sustain Abilities as soon as I saw the intelligence drainers. Once I hit brainless I ended up getting swarmed and things went very bad very quickly.

Frankly, I probably should have taken the route out of the Abyss that I saw on Abyss: 4 when I saw my intelligence was as low as it was.

Still, it was refreshing to get a character as far as that one again. Now I need to decided if I try some more Draconian Summoners or do something new.
