Midgame angst (DsBe)

More than once recently I've reached a point in the midgame, before tackling any of the rune branches, where I am concerned my character is not strong but there seems little option but to go on into more difficult areas. In my current game I've finished D up to 15, Lair and Orc. The usual next steps are the Lair rune branches, in this case Snake and Shoals. I feel like I might be OK in Snake 1 to 4 but Snake 5, and any of Shoals, seem like they will be tough - as does Depths. I've been in this position before with other (melee-focused) characters but I don't know if the problem lies with the strategic development of my character (though since it's a Be there's not that much to go wrong in terms of skills) or something else.

Does anyone have any advice here - either in terms of character development so far, or how to proceed - aside from the obvious "proceed with caution" (or with as much caution as a Troggite ever uses)?

Re: Midgame angst (DsBe)

You've got a very powerful tool in your arsenal - the rod of clouds. Unless you find a wand of heal wounds soon I would recommend enchanting the rod of clouds and putting few points in evocations.

I would recommend doing snakes. In my opinion it is the easiest rune branch. Shoals on the other hand are nightmare for me, especially after recent changes and appearence of satyrs/fauns.

Re: Midgame angst (DsBe)

Character looks ok.

For Snake 5, just remember not to rush into that central vault area filled with greater nagas (it's like Elf in that respect). Hang around the edges, try to draw enemies out 1 by 1. Try not to teleport or get teleported, because there's a good chance you'll end up in there. Antimagic works very well vs greater nagas.

Re: Midgame angst (DsBe)

Thanks for your comments. I got minced on Snake 1. I've several times now had the experience of feeling a mid-game character is insufficiently strong to proceed and getting killed soon after. Leaving aside issues around self-fulfilling prophecies, does anyone have any comments about what to do in such a situation? Some of it comes down to luck, in that my skill level is such that finding a strong weapon or piece of armour can make a big difference to whether I'm able to proceed or not.

In general, is there anything to be done, in such a situation, aside from proceeding with caution?

I watched your replay. ( !lg confidenceinterval xl=16 dsbe snake 1 -tv )
Your #1 problem and completely avoidable if you know not to do it, is you rested near unexplored territory. Especially, you rested near a vault. Every time something wandered out from the vault your fighting made noise and caused the next thing to wander towards the noise, engage with you again, etc. The solution is to not rest near unexplored territory and instead of just resting when injured, retreat towards the stairs 10+ tiles from any unexplored territory boundaries (e.g. TAKE the stairs if you have to) before hitting 5. Obviously after you made this bad choice you could save yourself with any number of consumables, etc. but if you just do this then you wouldn't have had to use anything OR die AND it wouldn't have mattered how lucky/unlucky you are AND there are zero (speedrunning-related aside) drawbacks to doing this.

Or if you like, you can think of it as applying crate's law pre-emptively - move away from the next monster that's going to appear in advance. But maybe it's important enough to warrant its own point in a tactics guide, as if you can't/don't apply crate's law for whatever reason, then you need to apply this law instead after the fight.

Re: Midgame angst (DsBe)

Thanks for taking the time to do that. Obviously, despite my protestations about proceeding with caution, I am not doing that sufficiently. I will rest more carefully in future!

Re: Midgame angst (DsBe)

I haven't noticed resting generating noise. I always rest whenever I'm standing when I kill the last enemy coming at me.
I'd usually push 5 immediately after a battle is over. We assume I am low HP here. I push 5 and a mob appears at edge of LOS. I would then pull that one mob towards explored territory (for 5-10 tiles, maybe more if I have a feeling or it's a dangerous area). Then I'd kill the mob and immediately rest at the newly reached place (away from unexplored area as suggested by Patashu). That always seemed like an adequate way of dealing with resting. Also, I am lazy.

However, I do apply "crate's law". I pull mobs towards explored space when I expect impending trouble.

Re: Midgame angst (DsBe)

Resting itself doesn't generate noise - but monsters who don't know where you are generally wander (unless they're still sleeping) and will randomly happen to come into your LOS, and then chase you (if they pass your stealth check).

Also, if you recently fought, then anything woken up by the noise is approaching the noise is approaching YOU because you rested on noise near unexplored territory.

Re: Midgame angst (DsBe)

I almost exclusively play melee-centric chars, and I often have the same feeling of being under-powered heading into lair branches. I will occasionally duck into Elf and clean up some of that, or more usually explore a bit more of the lair branch levels than normal. I do generally find that if I can grab a rune, clearing out some of vaults solves most exp-related issues.

Re: Midgame angst (DsBe)

Sounds like my experience so I'm glad it's not just me. I guess Elf 1 and 2 are probably OK, particularly if you have Trog to back you up. The only danger is being tempted down to Elf 3 for all the loot - while failing to consider all the nasties...

Re: Midgame angst (DsBe)

I think with Trog, as long as you have a digging wand Elf:3 should be really easy. Just make a little kill chamber with the digging wand near the end vault, and lure the dudes out in small groups. Use Trog's Hand for the banish-happy dudes and be liberal with zerk and BiA.

Trog is probably one of the most Elf:3 friendly gods, since he pretty much just takes care of the main difficulties of Elf.
