This character started as a standard fighter, training his maces to minimum delay and acquiring some armor and fighting skill in the process. However, I've planned from the beginning to branch him out into spellcasting, and was lucky enough to find controlled blink very early on. He's raised intelligence in levels whenever possible and has been putting experience into his spellcasting and translocation skills ever since his great mace hit mindelay.

I've acquired an assortment of spellbooks, but am not sure what to learn, or when, or how much to train it. All I am sure of is controlled blink. Between the books of Wizardry, Alchemy, Beasts, Clouds, Dreams, Fire, Maledictions, the Dragon, and the Warp, what sort of spells, if any, might be worth learning right now and training alongside or instead of translocations?

The biggest question for me is how much translocations and spellcasting I will need to cast controlled blink in a decent light suit of armor.

Don't you have a better armour? That plate is not very good, especially for a character who is trying to cast spells.
Also drop potion of beneficial mutation if you don't want to use it.
I would go for Haste if I was going for 15 runes.

Edit. As you can see even 12.5 levels in Translocations still give 100% failure rate, it is better to test it in wizard mode before doing such big investments into a skill.

The player in the above thread made a similar mistake, which was dumping tons of xp into translocations very early and having a rather weak character. The first time that cblink failed him, he simply died.

While cblink is a very good spell, it isn't really something you should want early on. This is kind of hard to explain: you might like to think of it as a late game utility spell, and not a 'bread and butter' type of thing. In other words, even if you had it, you wouldn't want to be using it all the time, so your xp isn't being put to much use.

Spells that a character like yours should want would look something like this: apportation, summon butterflies, blink, swiftness, repel missiles, regeneration, haste (eventually). Cblink is sort of on the list, assuming you are swimming in xp, and I guess it's on the list for you now anyway since you have so much translocations.

Another important tip I can give you is to pick up a staff of wizardry and swap to it before fights so you can cast some of these spells. That would save you a great deal of experience and is one of the most common items I see left out of character dumps on the tavern.

I'm wearing the plate for now because even without it controlled blink is still very difficult to cast. There are several OK choices for lighter armor around e.g. the salamander hide and troll hide that could be made into decent spellcasting armor if I wanted to use a scroll. Until controlled blink's online, I figure I might as well just go around bashing things in the heaviest suit I've got.

Would be all over those translocations if I could find 'em. Got the Book of Battle now, so am working on hexes and charms for much lower level spells.

Unfortunately, though I've been looking all over, there's no wizardry in sight, either in ring or staff form.

There aren't any hexes that are good for this character, and the only spell in Book of Battle I would recommend is regeneration. That being said, of course feel free to experiment on your own.

Btw I hope to never find a staff of wizardry for melee character. I know it is a useful item but it makes me hate the game when I am swapping it around all the time (even using ').

Well, I've goofed up already, then. It still seems to be strong enough to win the game with careful play.

I thought spectral weapon might be nice. What makes it a bad choice? I figured regen would be good,too, so am working on charms, but if hexes won't do me any good I'll turn em off. I've not really invested anything into them yet.

Basically I've understimated by quite a lot how much experience and intelligence it takes to cast high level spells. I thought it took *less* than reaching mindelay on most weapons. Goes to show why I only ever get anywhere with melee.

Spectral Weapon is not that great for Gr because it does not have your high AC but still shares damage with you.

Once I had VpEn of Sif, who was stabber, and can cast Orb of Destruction. His combat capability was mana-limited. I didn't like it.

I think a "good fighter/wizard" is an spellcaster who have trained some fighting/weapon/defensive skills, or that would be "wizard/fighter". ^_^
Merfolk Ice Elementalist using polearms is an example of fighter/wizard I guess.

Yes, I've gotten the distinct impression that it's easier for a spellcaster to branch out into melee fighting than vice versa.

All I mean by fighter/wizard is someone who is both competent enough in melee to fight endgame threats at least in a three rune game, and is able to cast some good spells as well. What I had in mind was a fighter who could blink around when a fight got out of hand like my warper, but apparently if I wanted to do that I really should have just played a warper.

Thanks as always guys. I restarted because he just felt like a somewhat weaker bog standard GrFi. It wasn't what I had in mind, and I've already won a three rune game with a GrBe so it felt redundant anyway.

It's not like Gr have bad AC in lighter armour, or that you need great AC if your EV is good enough. You could just try a character with lighter armour (mottled dragon armour is very light and gives good AC, fire/ice/pearl aren't too hard to cast in either). That being said, you could try the same thing again and branch out later - heavy armour + spellcasting is a very good idea if you do it right. Another thing, Translocations are very good but I would consider Charms to be more useful for most characters, so you should learn Charms first if you find the right books.

This is mostly what I wanted to get across. Tloc is not really good to hybridize with unless you just want apport and blink since they're only level 1 and 2. It normally only makes sense to get cblink much later, when you have more xp than you need.

A gree would be a good and reasonably simple character for casting spells in heavier armours. Aside from taking advantage of gargoyle apts, one reason for this is that earth magic benefits a lot from spell power, so when you are training your skills high in order to cast spells in armour, you are also increasing the damage they do.
