CiP: Deep Elf Conjurer of Vehumet

So this is my first serious attempt at a caster in a looong time. I gave up on the summoners for now. Anyway, here is my dump. I'm trying to stay non-elemental for now, except for the sticky flame Vehumet just gave me. It was too good to pass up. I've tried to balance defensive skills with my casting skills and that seems to be working fairly well. I lucked out with the running boots and an experience potion. Thought on whether I should pursue the dagger or axe of electrocution? Given my proficiency with short blades, I think the dagger is better, but I just want a sanity check. With the ring and staff of power, I've got mana coming out of my backside and I've been using it to deadly effect.

The dagger is much better. It has lower mindelay, you have a better apt, and there is a higher chance of you finding a better short blade you can use down the line (because better axes than that hand axe are heavy axes and you really shouldn't use these on a DECj). Unless you want to stay non-elemental for roleplaying reasons or something, learning an elemental school seems like a good idea.

And as you already have Sticky flame and Bolt of Magma, those are two good reasons to train fire.

Also, I would stop training Spellcasting for a long time.

Well, I would stop training spellcasting now. 59 MP at XL 13 is crazy.

I can't believe you have more Fighting than Conjuration. Seriously, turn off everything but Conjuration and Fire until both are your highest skills. And I'd put some experience into Earth too, maybe take it to 5, then turn it off for awhile?
Don't get any more spellcasting for awhile; sure, you have great aptitude for it, but it's like a quarter as effective as a magical school for making your spells better.

I don't think these skills are bad. I would probably get more Conjurations now, but at least it's not one of those awful "no Fighting, no Dodging, Spellcasting and magic schools only only" characters you see posted here sometimes.

So, when you play a spellcaster do you keep fighting even with your spellcasting skills? I would probably have fighting at 5 and dodge at 6-7 on that character. Am I making a poor choice?

Spellcasting 13.5, Int 25, Conjurations 9.7.
It means raw spell power for IMB is (13.5/2 + 2*9.7)*2.5 = 65, after step down it's 57. Damage from IMB is 2d(6+57/6)=2d15.5

With Conjurations 15 raw spell power would be (13.5/2 + 2*15)*2.5 = 91, after step down it's 70. Damage from IMB is 2d(6+70/6)=2d17.6

As you can see we have very small increase in damage (it will be even worse after raw spell power 100) while training fighting is almost never a bad idea because Fighting gives the more HP the higher XL character is.

Just noticed he has 10 ranks in Stealth, also way more than I would have on a non-stabber at this point. I usually don't level it at all on a conjurer, though i could see the merit of raising it to 5 or so.

Yeah I wouldn't raise Stealth, but I would raise Fighting and most definitely Dodging. I believe having less than 10 of both would be a bad thing on most level 13 characters.

Yes, 10 levels in Stealth is not optimal, but it can be good for some situations like when I feel my character is very powerful and can die to Erolcha with Banishment only. This is the case for DECj usually, even without 59 MP at XL 13 :)

Main purpose of training Conjurations is to decrease spell failure rate for Conjuration spells. This character has all Conjuration spells at 1%. Though I would probably have some level 5-6 spell memorized at this point (I don't like Bolt of Magma).

I see...I usually play DEFE of Sif Muna. So I know I'm getting Bolt of Fire, so I need more Conj/Fire to make it work.
But I guess he can't depend on Vehumet giving him that spell.

oh and did BattleSphere get enhanced at all when it got moved to Lvl 5? Just started playing Crawl again this week; wondering if it should be a mainstay/priority .

I'm not a big fan of bolt of magma either, but I have to use what's available. When I find more books or Vehumet offers up something better, I'll jump on it. Since I don't have any amnesia scrolls, I need to keep spell slots available. I trained the stealth because deep elves have some aptitude at it and it's incredibly useful for keeping squishy characters alive. It has already saved me several times from groups I'd rather not tangle with yet. It also makes it a lot easier to get away once I break LOS. I probably won't go any higher for the rest of the game. This is my first caster with Vehumet (I usually go Sif Muna as well) and I don't really like it so far. If I didn't think Vehumet's wrath would murder me, I'd switch. What tier of miscast can I expect from his wrath by the way?

Keep playing, Vehumet is better than Sif Muna during late game when you kill several monster by a single spell and get all your mana back. I don't like Sif Muna for blasters, she encourages more careful playstyle with lots of retreat for mana channeling.

Latest update. I've found several decent upgrades to my gear and a pile of new spells. I'm ramping up Spellcasting as quickly as possible for spell slots. I just cleared Snake. I also finally found another amnesia scroll and dumped magma bolt. I'm undecided on what to go after next. Silence would let me clear Elf:3, but I need some mass damage spells. IMB+IBS are awesome, but not so great for crowds. I found multiple haste and teleport wands so far, but no healing wand. I also found 2 Necronomicons. Vehumet is offering me fire storm, ice storm, and shatter. Fire storm is my goal, but it's at 99% failure right now. I have lots of wizardry items, including 2 rings and a staff, but I don't feel like that's needed just yet.

So my questions at this point are:
1. Which armor and weapons would you be using?
2. Which spells should I be using? Keep in mind that I have no amnesia scrolls and they seem to be rare in this game.
3. Anything else you'd like to suggest.

I'm pretty sure that leather armour is just about strictly worse than archmagi, except for the melee accuracy bonus. Wear the helmet of intelligence and gloves of dexterity, too.
I'd probably use the falchion; I expect the dagger of elec is actually better on average.
Dazzling Spray and Fulminant Prism are both good at handling crowds, and Poisonous cloud is like the perfect anti-elf spell. Don't use silence, you will cast more spells than they will. Train more spell schools and less spellcasting - don't forget you can destroy books for amnesia, too.

If a book contains a spell that you currently know but want to forget; press r to read, select any spellbook that contains the spell, select the spell that you want to forget, press f then Y. This destroys the book.

Sif hates this but Veh is cool with it. (Sif offers an amnesia ability though so it is not a problem.)

Oh yeah spellbook has to be in your inventory to do that, you need to be able to (r)ead it. Probably that was obvious, but just to be completely clear...

Book destruction to forget spells is one of crawl's less obvious things, I didn't know you could do that for quite a while.

I mean, who's examining spells they already have memorized in a book? That seems like the only way you'd notice the (f)orget option.
