CiP-NaWi looking for advice

http://crawl.akrasiac.org/rawdata/TheMa ... dToker.txt

Wondering if I am making the right choices so far. I'm on D7 and so far so good, just picked up a bunch of wands on D6 and have a question about my scrolls of enchant weapon, I have 2 of each (I and II) but only a normal long sword so far. Should I use them now or should I wait until I find a better long blade worth enchanting more? Not that melee combat is my primary method of execution, but i'm level 4 already and figure it can't hurt to have another way to kill things.

Just recently picked Vehumet as my god, seemed like the right choice. Mainly for the mana regen and the access to some hurty spells. Also how much skill do you need to make a blowgun useful? Is it hard to land a needle or two without any skill?

Any tips would be appreciated, I don't usually roll with a Naga, but the RNG gods determined it to be so and I went with it.

Re: CiP-NaWi looking for advice

I'll leave more mage-specific advice up to others, but one thing you should do is use manual training and focus on only 1-2 skills at a time. Right now you're kind of training everything, and that'll usually end up less efficient than more directly planning your development.

If a spell has multiple schools, will just training one of them be enough?

Re: CiP-NaWi looking for advice

it will average the spell schools, so if something is charms/air, and you have 3 charms and 7 air, you effectively have 5 for that spell. If it's low level, or you have very good int/wizardy, then you can probably train one, but it's always less experience, and generally best, to train both. You certainly don't have to train them equally, though.

My quick rule of thumb is to get the spell level in each school skill, and then see if I want more.

This does not seem to work well. A level 9 spell will surely be at 100% failure if you have just 9 in the relevant magic schools.

Re: CiP-NaWi looking for advice

Let's consider situations that actually come up, in the context of training multiple schools:
I have 8 Charms as an OgNe, get Repel Missiles, pick up 2 Air. Probably enough.
I have 12 Conj/Air as a TeAE, get Poison cloud, get 6 Poison. Likely enough, depending on other spells - I'd probably just get more conj/air/spc if failure is still too high, to better help Lightning Bolt power.
I have 15 Fire as a DEFE, get Ring of Flames and 7 Charms. This will probably not be enough, I will get say 12 (plenty for Haste) and see how it looks then.
If I'm considering Fire Storm I almost certainly have 15-20 in both Fire and Conj already and this wouldn't apply.

Also note the second part of that "and then see if I want more". The point is to get the cheap levels for better success/power at minimal investment.

So, I'm on D9 and I have found the entrance to the Lair... Which is something I have 0 experience with. Am I strong enough to dive in? Gonna finish exploring D9 first, though.

Perhaps go back and recover my Enchant Weapon scrolls and use it on my long sword?

Re: CiP-NaWi looking for advice

Well, lair is relatively easy. That said, there are monsters you have to be careful of like spiny frogs, black mambas, and hydras, and one of your most useful spells against most creatures (mephitic cloud) will not be effective against them.

I would definitely recommend following Tasonir's advice and focus on only 1 or 2 skills. I think you should choose to go towards earth or air based on your spell books and train only that skill until you can get LRD or lightning bolt online. Once you've done that, lair won't be much of a problem. Since you already have electricity resistance and it will help mephitic cloud, I would go with air.

Edit: You should also check to see if that cloak you are holding is better than +0, look for a helmet, and use any enchant armour scrolls you may have found on your auxilliary armour.

No bueno.

Almost certainly you will want to be getting more conjurations. Go to skills, press the "/" key, and turn off everything except conjurations (at least, for a while).
Vehumet is *the* god for conjurations anyway. She will turn your naga into a machine gun of magical destruction, if you would only let her. If you wanted to go hybrid, I guess any god works but with Vehumet you definitely want to just turn things into fine mist.

Training everything makes you just a little good

  Code:
d - Repel Missiles        Chrm/Air       ##....       12%         2    None
e - Slow                  Hex            #.......     12%         2    None
i - Shock                 Conj/Air       ###.         2%          1    None
k - Stoneskin             Trmt/Erth      #.........   12%         2    None

Also no bueno. Most of these are kinda useless. Explaining may get tedious, but lets say you have better attack options available, ranged attackers are non-existent in Lair anyway, you don't want to be burning experience on Hexes yet, and you're betting that nothing will ever get into melee range of you.

Don't take the criticism badly, Lair is a *huge* milestone. When you finally clear Lair:8, you've probably gotten farther than 50% of crawlers ever have.

Not that I advocate low-Earth Stoneskin (though it's probably better than nothing), but I always wonder when people post generalizing stuff like "you're a caster so you should never let things to melee you", what do they do when something does manage to get into melee range? Say "well, I did fuck up" and ctrl-q-yes?

Edit: also, fire drakes are a regular Lair spawn and there is that one Shoals entrance with centaurs, and I think I saw that altar vault with water and centaurs in Lair too.

Re: CiP-NaWi looking for advice

Well I turned off all my skills except for air and conjurations, also left spellcasting on, mainly because I stupidly drank a mutation potion, which gave me more HP and less MP. And a nifty poison barb, which hasn't actually proven very useful.

So I'm hoping to regain some of the lost MP, I'm at 21MP right now and that isn't going to cut it.

Well for the first question...you could choose to go Stoneskin, and proceed to invest spell slots and experience to make it worthwhile, at the cost of reducing your offense, or you could maximize your offense.

of course you should train your defences. of course you should be getting defensive spells. of course you should train a weapon skill, no matter how much you want to spam fire storms, because no matter what you do there's always a *chance* that something survives, or you run out of mp, or you are silenced, and then you are well and truly screwed. besides that, conjurations and more offensive firepower will give much greater returns at the moment than a (somewhat) piddly 3-4 AC. when you play casters you really are betting that nothing gets in melee range, but you will not always win that bet, and few things solve Lair better than bolts of fire.

also, well, fire drakes do spawn later in Lair, but i'd forgotten about the centaurs and co. RM is definitely pretty good at this point.

I don't think 3-4 AC is "piddly", I would be glad to find a ring with 4 AC that early and I would likely wear it for a very long time. I never learned Stoneskin without being a EE, though. I'm not sure it was a good idea for this character - then again, that's not how I would build a character like that, anyway.

Petrify, form the book of Geomancy, is realy nice spell, can be life saver in hairy situations. Some kind of area of effect spells are helpful for the Lair.

If you ask me i wouldnt use enchant scrolls on +0,+0 long sword, save it for better (branded?) weapon.

Something eventually will get into melee range with you. ^_^

Re: CiP-NaWi looking for advice

Well haven't had a chance to play much, but I survived Lair 1 so far, managed to kill an 8-headed hydra and now am getting ready to descend into Lair 2.

And i've decided to go with earth over air, hope it's the right decision. Too late on the enchant weapon scrolls, I picked up a scimitar and said screw it, so now I have a +4, +2 scimitar.

Also picked up a wand of teleportation and I already have a ring of tele control, so that should come in handy.

EDIT: !#@#@ I'm down here with a ghost, got me good then I teleported away.

Update from the front line: I'm still down here with the ghost somewhere, I'm thinking of just fleeing to L3 but I'm trying to clear as much of L2 as i can first... got a baaaaad feeling about this...

...and now I'm surrounded by yaks, I fully expect that ghost to come wandering around the corner any second now

Aaaaaand DEAD

Dropped to L3 to flee the ghost and ran smack dab into a nest of blink frogs and green rats, in the wide open. Took a few out but was overwhelmed. Ah well. On the bright side I beat my reccord for both descent and score, so it wasn't a total wash. Also learned some valuable lessons.

Re: CiP-NaWi looking for advice

I think Nawz is my favourite background - and i won pretty much of them.
I dont know what were your stats at the end, but there are some troubling thing in the dump you have provided from my perspective. I will write my coments assuming that you wanted conjurer style naga- if you wanted hybrid - disregard them
1. Defence. You have Short Blades, Long Blades, Slings and Dodging - and only 1 point of fighting. I would recommend to put all this experience to fighting since it has +0 aptitude and receives 20% bonus due to naga intristic - this would make you tankier
2. Offence. I would not recommend spreading your experience that early on. As a conjurer style character you want to concentrate on specific shools early on. I personally prefer fire/conj (and you already had firebolt available)- but you can take whatever you want. still, concentrationis is required - you would better have a specific goal and move to it rather then spreading your experience thin and being jack of all trades - master of none. Naga have neutral magic aptitudes which allow them to be competent spellcasters, but having no bónuses means that they need to make their decisions and stick to them. Also, I would propose to train poison up to 4 points due to the perfect aptitude - you dont want mephilic cloud to fail in stressful moment (14% failure is quite risky imho)
In my opinion conjure flame and mephilic cloud are your best friends early - you very first target should be to get them around 3% failure. I also train spellcasting to make them hungerless - but this is a personal preference. I would also say that air magic is the most dangerous choice on naga - it is very loud and end up with more problems then you solve.

NaWz have plenty of options to resolve if something end up in melee range to them - and this options can be magic only.
1. Mephilic cloud is the most obvious one - you can remove almost all poison vulnerable enemies in lair with mephilic cloud, poison spit and magic dart
2. when it comes to poison resistant enemies - you have your conjure flames. Spiny frogs will gladly burn themselves, as will hydras if you place yourself and flames correctly.
3. stair dancing and taking only one enemy at time is especially good with nagas due to the fact that they can withstand huge amount of beating because of their high HP.
So yes, you really can go on very well without any investment into any weapon skill on NaWz.

Re: CiP-NaWi looking for advice

Meph is sort of loud and not many threats in Lair are affected by it (it also needs to pass a HD check), clouds require pre-planning, stair-dancing implies letting something into melee range. I don't think that clearing Lair with only starting Wz spells and without training melee is a good idea; I'm not sure I'll be even able to do that, especially on a Naga (slow 2). I remember clearing Lair with only imps and meph oncem but that was back when you could cover your entire screen in imps and let them murder pretty much anything; not an experience that is possible to repeat and not an experience I would want to repeat either.

normally Vehumet will give you something usefull - especially if you will train only spell schools. or you will find a book. or if the resistence is too high (say packs of death yaks are moving all around and you still have only lvl 3 spells) you can delve deeper into the dungeon or try first level of ork dungeon. This specific char, for example, did not have problem with access to spells - he already had firebolt available. the problem was, imho, the lack of specialisation.
anyway, i almost never train weapon skills on my NaWz before finishing the lair. fighting i like - but only as a very effective enlargement of health pool.

Veh piety doesn't require you to "only train spell schools" (or maybe you were implying that the more schools you have the better is the chance you will be able to use his gift immediately?), post-Lair Dungeon on average is worse than Lair and Orc:1 can spawn some very unpleasant things.

I often don't train melee skills until late L or maybe even deeper, but that doesn't stop me from meleeing things. Especially when I get constriction.

i guess something like this would be quite a typical example of conjurer naga clearing the lair...
And perhapce I misunderstood Sar - i agree that you still need to melee things sometimes (my preferable position - from the cloud of flame). You just did not need melee skills that early on.

Re: CiP-NaWi looking for advice

EV 10, whyyyyy.
So much slaying, though. This character will annihilate things in melee with any decent weapon once you decide to get to it.

Edit: also, too much Spc for my taste, too much Conj and a spell I pretty much never use (delayed Fball). Well, and I find staff of power to be a bit useless.

Could you explain what you meant? Too little EV I assume?
If you could, what would you switch that conj and spc experience into instead?

Re: CiP-NaWi looking for advice

Well 10 EV is what your average Naga starts with, so yeah, I wasn't complaining about it being too high.
I'd probably get more Dodging (something like 15-16 EV is doable on a Naga) and Fighting.

Re: CiP-NaWi looking for advice

Great advice guys, running a DsSu now. Also got a newbie forum question... how do I use the [code][/code] commands to put my char file in a post like you guys do?

EDIT: And a question about demonspawn mutations, if I get say, spikes 1, am I guaranteed to also gets spikes 2, etc. eventually? Or perhaps a better chance than normal? Or is it totally random?

There's a code button when you make a post that will automatically create code tags and you can put whatever you like in there.

By 27 you are guaranteed to get spikes 3 if you get spikes 1 from being a demonspawn.

It's really straight forward, you need your character file from the crawl directory, which is usually in the morgue folder and is named character_name.txt. (For example if you have linux it is in ~/.crawl/morgue.) Just copy the content and put it right between the code tags. If you are playing online the server should give you the file.

For this message the author Berlioz has received thanks:

Re: CiP-NaWi looking for advice

I don't like using chaos weapons due to the chance of the enemy becoming hasted/invisible/berserk/polymorphed into something scarier/etc.

Use ice beast a lot, its attacks will slow lots of cold-blooded Lair enemies and also hurt them lots.
Wins (Does not include my GrEE^Veh 15-runer...stupid experimental branch)

Re: CiP-NaWi looking for advice

Well made it to L3 and am still in pretty good shape. My arsenal of wands keeps holding out, also picked up some magic books so now I have undead to add to my summoned armies. Found a lantern of shadows, what's the best use for this thing?

Re: CiP-NaWi looking for advice

A lantern of shadows is pretty strong, with enough evocations (I'm not really sure how much you want) it can kill many things. In your case I would just use it when out of MP and running away rather than training more evocations - LOS will be reduced, and the occasional shadow should help you gain space.

Getting a little (4ish) hexes/air/ice for your summons would be good now, and some fighting/dodging for yourself.

Re: CiP-NaWi looking for advice

Found the Swamp entrance...

Should I go through it or continue my way through the Lair? Is the Swamp hard/worth it?

EDIT: And what's a better choice, Vampiric Draining or Regeneration, keeping in mind I already have a Ring of Regeneration (does the ring and spell even stack?)

Re: CiP-NaWi looking for advice

ALL forms of regeneration stack (except for trolls wearing troll leather armor), so yes, use the ring and the spell. Regeneration is generally better than vampiric draining; regeneration is probably the second strongest spell in the game, imho. Haste is first - train some charms and learn haste when you can. You need to switch to manual skill training, and stop training 5+ skills at once.

Finish the lair before you do any lair sub branches. Typically it goes early dungeon until lair, lair, orc, finish the rest of dungeon (not depths), then do a lair sub branch (not slime).

Return to YASD! YAVP! and characters in progress too
