YASD DrCj of Ash, Vaults 5 is hell.

Hi guys!
I made another DrCj, after some tries, and it is going very well! I think I'm not making any stupid mistakes, if I am, please tell me.
the nice trident I found early is surprisingly strong, especially with +6+13 total slaying. nice.
I'm loving Orb of Destruction, the feeling of exploding monsters and sending chunks everywhere is nice :3 but I think a AOE damage spell would be a good idea. hmmmm.
also, I'm using the Hat of Pondering, and I really dont know if it is a good idea. strange thing, looks like I'm still faster than most monsters, that cant be right.
cleared Lair, D, and will go to Orc, probably. maybe I find haste there.
what do you guys think? I dont know where to put XP right now.

Hat of pondering is a little less bad now (+1 move delay instead of +2 previously). I used it for a while on my NaEn, figuring that 15 move delay isn't that much worse than 14.

With swiftness and hat of pondering on a normal speed character, I think you'd still be faster than normal.

Hat of Pondering is best for hybrids IMHO and this character looks like a hybrid indeed. Just don't forget to remove the hat if you see even one serious problem caused by wearing it (my last character removed it after almost dying to Elephant).

I think Abyss:3 is definitely worse than Vaults:5.

Slime is a possibility though.

That sequence of events (switch snake with spider) just happened to me as well. Stepped down to vaults, warden comes into view, stairs sealed, boned. I kind of wish we had a less brutal option for a third rune than V5 or dealing with slime pits and the damn royal jelly.

Really? The abyss over vault 5?

Lately I've changed my vault 5 strategy. I used to try to stairdance the enemies, but as you saw, sometimes the stairways get locked, then you're really in trouble.

On my recent characters, firstly, I wait until I've cleared two lair branches, and depths, before I try vault 5.
Then, I go down the stairs, and immediately head for the closest opening in the enemies (you can squeeze through diagonally). Then I run toward the edge of the map.

Your strategy at this point depends largely on your character, but this is a good time to quaff those potions of agility, might, or brilliance. The vault guards aren't especially tough, but there are a lot of them.


Note vault5 isn't -ctele. So if you have controlled teleport, or better yet c-blink, you can use that in conjunction with magic mapping to move the fight wherever it best serves you. The worst place to fight those guards is at the staircase, you want the option of running back there to escape if necessary.

I used hatch for entering Vaults 5 on my last character (it wasn't Fo so I could teleport if unlucky). It was pretty hard (MiBe with plain spear) but doable, I think on average you are expected to land in a less dangerous location than the one near stairs.

Well recently the corners were removed from the quadrant things so monsters can get to you even there. Plus the corridors in those areas are still I think 3 wide.

Well you want to fight them somewhere else primarily so you're not fighting so damn many at once. You still aren't going to be able to get them into a 1 tile corridor or anything.
The other reason to fight them somewhere else is so you have stairs to run back to, that are less likely to be locked by a stupid warden.

I tele-ed immediately after going downstairs, to a less open space. but was marked immediately, wich... is pretty bad. I really dont know how to deal with mark.

http://crawl.chaosforge.org/Scroll_of_vulnerability purges the Mark off you. It does other stuff, too, but that's why the recommendation.

More obvious, but using mark against you counts as a spell, and thus sentinels cannot use it while silenced. Silence not only prevents, but also interrupts convokers' word of recall, which is pretty great because even if they manage to get out of the radius of effect of silence, they have to start over at the beginning. (Silence does *not* prevent Vault Wardens from activating their "sealing rune," though.)
