CIP -GrFi of Zin

My most successful character so far - 2 runes in (which takes my total ever to 3). Reasonably confident on skilling, magic was probably a bit of a bad idea but I've never had access to Crystal Plate before and I'll probably stick with it unless some seriously good dragon armour drops. The gods of clustering illusions don't seem inclined to throw any great weapons my way but otherwise things are going swimmingly.
Stats are my main concern (I think). Is there any chance of getting this guy casting low level spells (I have old and new editions of the Skald books which seem like they might be worth it) or do I just get all the Dex I can- or even a little more Str?
And any other comments which spring to mind of course.

Re: CIP -GrFi of Zin

Ok haven't done wizmode to test, but given current strength and the fact that you are wearing crystal plate armour, putting more into strength will probably be the best stat-based way to "boost" (i.e., by lowering the armour penalty) spell success and EV. You will have to raise your magic skills and/or dodging higher than you normally would either way, certainly, but my gut tells me that putting the rest of your stat ups into strength will yield better results than the alternatives.

Re: CIP -GrFi of Zin

You are missing shields skill. It severely limits your spellcasting now (and your EV). There's magic level of 15 in shields to mitigate these penalties - this should be one of your first points to get.

If you want to get 2nd-3rd level spells, it's definitely possible even in CPA (after you fix your shields to at least lvl 10). You will get probably some str from leveling up, so feel free to spend your stat points as you like. You should also get your armour higher, though, preferably up to ~20. With CPA you should quickly see AC improvement and also penalties for spellcasting will drop. Consider int for easier spellcasting or even investment in dex (and dodging). It won't pump your evasion to 20+, but even 12 EV is clearly better than 2 EV.

Regarding Lamia, exp is not worth resources you'd probably have to spend to kill her and she is really dangerous. Just continue with clearing dungeon, there's plenty of exp waiting for you.

Re: CIP -GrFi of Zin

I'm thinking as far as shields go that I'll be going double handed sooner than I'd get a worthwhile benefit from training shields (also why I've overshot mindelay with my weapon skill), although there is a pretty consistent clustering illusion about this particular crawl-space continuum not containing any good, big maces so if I don't find something like that soon I might rethink this if what's available fails the taste test at about M&F 20.

For armour I'm currently thinking about it as my third priority after weapon and fighting, normally I'd favour AC/EV/SH over health, but with this character my AC seems heavily out of proportion to my health - which is a big part of the deal with gargoyles. My armour skill is looking a bit weak in comparison to the other skills but the end result seems sound enough for this stage in the game.

I've been considering EV a lost cause on this guy, I imagine in terms of % improvement per XP it's about the most efficient avenue available - but judging from little to no experience of this stage of the game I doubt how much of an edge 10 EV will give him against the things actually worry him. More than happy to take on advice about this though.

Re: CIP -GrFi of Zin

I have quite old plot (knowledge bots, term "EV"):
http://i.imgur.com/0RSGG.png
I'm not sure whether it's still accurate, but I liked it always as a rough guide. Conclusions whether it's satisfactory I'll leave up to you.

I perfectly understand your concerns about HP vs. armour. If you want to cast, though, you should improve armour at some point.
Great mace is one of my favored weapons even in extended, although of course holy brand is preferred then. The nice thing is that great mace will save you a lot of exp you'd have to put into shields. Also it requires barely 20 skill - much less than e.g. exec axe which doesn't outperform it against single target. Even crush branded great mace is more than enough to clear zot:5.

If you can at the same time pump your evasion up to ~15, you will not have a problem with lack of defense. If you are still really concerned, just run wizard mode and check.

Re: CIP -GrFi of Zin

Nice to know about great maces, I've got another character on the go with an executioners axe and anything that trumps that must be good. Not sure I'm up for converting just to get Holy Wrath but there has to be a great mace or even a dire flail about here somewhere with a good brand on it. Not that it's an actual problem now - recite plus crushing morning star can double tap trolls when the RNG's in the mood.

The EV data's pretty convincing, I'll go that way for a bit then work on armour again.

As far as Vaults (when the issue arises) is it scout-able at all or do I need to be fully prepped before I even peek at it. It's not a branch I've been in at all before, but I reckon this character will be pretty unlucky not to at least find the entrance (I'll go with the basic logic of not getting deep into new branches until all available routes through the dungeon are starting to feel overly risky in any case).

Re: CIP -GrFi of Zin

I think nothing other than changing cpa to a dragon armour other than golden will help your EV and spellcasting, if which case dex would be better for EV and int would be better for spellcasting. You have a wand of haste, so you could probably give up on magic and dodging in which case you can raise str. Since Gr have a lot of AC imo they should go light armour.

Vaults 1-4 should be very easy (be careful anyway, because there can occasionally be tough uniques or otherwise hard situations). Don't get the silver rune until you have cleared D to 27, as Vaults:5 is pretty hard.
As has been said already, Lamia is rather hard to kill. It's very probable that you would kill her, but don't take the risk of consumable waste or death. There is a ton of exp in crawl so you shouldn't take risks just for exp in general.

re: converting, Zin -> TSO -> Zin is one of the easiest ways to go. You can get 6* of TSO piety really quickly and Zin piety goes up quickly with money on the ground and neqoxecs in extended, and you can just donate to get back to high piety anyway. If you don't find a holy wrath weapon it would probably be worth it. That being said, there's also no reason to not just go TSO and stick with him, but Zin is very strong in extended as well so using Zin is good too.

Your dex is pretty decent so Dodging (even in CPA) is a good idea. It will take some levels before there is change in your EV, but after that it will go up at a good rate.

Re: CIP -GrFi of Zin

And what it would be at 27 dodging - 10EV? I think Gr sould just go light and it will save much effort. I'm not a fsim guy, though, so could be wrong.

What I read somewere is that dex is always better for dodging unless your str is considerably lower than encumbarance rate.

Dodging in heavy armour raises EV at a good rate once you gain the first levels. EV would probably be somewhere in the 20s at 27 (not that he should raise it to 27, that would be extreme, but even around 20 Dodging it would be much higher than 10). I've played tons of heavy armour characters without extremely high dex that had great EV.

edit: for reference, http://crawl.akrasiac.org/scoring/players/elynae.html has a lot of MiFis and similar characters if you look at the more recent games. The minotaurs have better dex but they also have EV around high 20s and to low 30s if they are wearing CPA/GDA, and often higher EV in plate. Subtract some points from that due to probably lower dodging skill and lower dex for this Gr.

Re: CIP -GrFi of Zin

Well. The conclusion is that you should raise dex anyway. Shouldn't Gr switch to a dragon armour though? I mean Gr has an awesome AC. I this case we are talking about a +8 CPA though, so it's a bit late.

edit: this spreadsheet shows that the difference in ev between 15 and 20dex is only 3 at 27, though

Interestingly, having more AC is better.

IMO, when you have a lot of AC as is, having more EV and casting spells easier is good, too.

Am I the only one who dislikes that weapon? A +0 morningstar is simply bad at this level, and there must be a dozen better maces&flails around.

It is a bit of an issue with my clustering illusions here, search gives me 0 dire flails, 14 great maces with nothing fancy in their description on the dungeon floor and a +1/+1 Great Mace of... wait for it... protection!
I've only just traded up to my morning star (which got vorpalized in a happy accident involving a scroll) from a +3/+3 Whip of Electrocution.
At this stage sub-par weaponry is a nagging worry about what'll happen if I don't find something soon-ish rather than an actual problem though. The current way Zin works is very powerful, half of what I'm coming across would rather turn in to salt than stick around to see what happens if I actually do "lay my vengeance upon you."

1. Even a +0 great mace is a sgnificant upgrade from your current weapon.
2. Any of those noname great maces can be well-enchanted.
3. You must have some enchant weapon scrolls, no?
4. The best: you know the spell "fire brand", so if you have another vorpalize weapon scroll, you can make a flaming great mace. (Even better would be to make a freezing weapon, it is insanely good in Zot).

I hadn't read the Autumn Katana thread at that point and didn't realise just how superior Elec is. According to the much revered wiki the noisiness effect doesn't even work these days so it's even good for stabbers.

In this specific case it's no longer an issue, the clustering illusion persisted until I'd stomped every last tile of the dungeon flat (and suffered no serious stopping power issues in the process), then the first thing I killed in vaults dropped a holy wrath great mace which has had a full games worth of scrolls boost it to +8/+8, so that more or less does the trick for now.

I may have killed myself on V5 though, plenty of piety and consumables but very shaky health. Hopefully have YAVP or YASD on this guy after my next game. This is what the level looked like on arrival, the current state of the place is a bit more of a shit tip.

Re: CIP -GrFi of Zin

Man I love scroll of immolation on V:5. Doesn't really work with your build though.

FYI, V:5 _always_ looks like that, at least in your version. I don't play trunk but apparently it's changed in .14.

Usually the strategies are either:
a) Head up one of those passages to the NSE or W as fast as possible, usually with blinking/haste or magic mapping/control teleport, so that you can have a more reasonable fight.
b) Less optimal, but most likely your best option now "stairdancing", going down the stairs, then directly back up to pull a few guys (max 8) and kill them on V:4. Rinse and repeat.

But those scary guys to the NW can ruin your day by marking you and/or closing the stairs.

Return to YASD! YAVP! and characters in progress too
