For some reason I thought monstrousity of Ds is detected much earlier than XL 12

Level 1 of deterioration mutation is pretty annoying, but getting robust 1 and high mp 1 from the same potion on a Ds with magic shield sounds so awesome that I would never even think about quaffing cure mutation.
I think monstrous used to be detected on the first mutation of any you got from being a demonspawn, but that was changed to prevent startscumming?

Learned something new: trying an unknown amulet while under Finesse effect was a very bad idea. Fortunately I got poisonous breath from that contamination.
Edit. I am not sure if +2 crossbow of elec deals more damage than +7 crossbow but Oka is awesome any way.

Int 6 is very annoying, I basically have to recast Repel Missiles twice when fighting a pack of Yaktaurs.
Still no source of rC+ so I cannot enchant FDH.
I think I will do Swamp, then will buy clarity and will do some Spider. Wizlab proved that my defenses are too low (I escaped when some monks got summoned) but I am not sure what I can do about it so Finesse is my best "defense". I cannot even get Phase Shift because of Int. At least I was lucky with MR items (even dropped a robe of MR), poor Rupert and Erolcha didn't have a chance to paralyze/banish me.

You have really bad defenses and you keep training Staves, even though they are almost at min delay with Heroism anyway.

Yes, you are right, I should stop training Staves now. D16 gave me lots of bolts (several yaktaur packs) but I was really low (about 30 bolts) on D15 so I was training staves just to survive.

Rot rune ending was relatively easy for the character, the only exception was Bone Dragon who made me teleport away first (I got surrounded by Vampire Mosquitoes/Alligators while trying to retreat from it) and then forced me to use Blink several times despite Heroism/Finesse.
Spiders Nest is surprisingly hard, I cannot spam Finesse and Wolf Spiders refuse to die to poisoned bolts.

I was really curious to see if it's possible to kill an almost dead battleaxe of draining without seeing its EV, AC, speed, my to-hit, its to-hit and damage rolls, HP remaining. I could escape easily but decided to die trying to hit an almost dead battleaxe 30+ times just to prove that crawl design of hiding everything is bad. Having Crossbows drained from 17 to 6 was fun

That was my last game of crawl. I suck at giving advices, I suck at suggesting changes to the game, I got wins with every possible play style I was interested in so I am moving to other rogue-likes.

That was my last game of crawl. I suck at giving advices, I suck at suggesting changes to the game, I got wins with every possible play style I was interested in so I am moving to other rogue-likes.
Well, I'm not sure you proved what you thought you proved. "Should I fight this?" is not a decision you make once and then your fate is sealed. Even if an enemy is potentially one good hit from death, if you start whiffing and it starts getting lucky shots, you have at least a few turns to recognize how things have changed and alter your plans accordingly. Any time you are getting close to death (or getting drained that bad) you'd back out long before things became that drastic. Streaks of bad luck happen. By definition it is not likely to happen in any given encounter, but over the course of an entire game, so many opportunities present themselves that at some point you'll have a string of very unfavorable rolls. Since you have as much time as you like to make decisions, however, you generally notice those strings of unfavorable rolls while they are still rather short, and you decide not to give them the opportunity to become longer. Your prospects for any given encounter change as the fight progresses, but so can the tactics you choose, in order to adapt to that.
Maybe taking a break from Crawl and Tavern is what you need, but I hope that isn't your last game and, for what it's worth, I hope the above is not your last post.

I was at yellow drain when the battleaxe was "almost destroyed". I suspect it had something like AC 30 (I saw such values for animated weapons when playing with my mode) so my first bolts were just lucky. Crawl is bad and I didn't want to continue playing it.

I abandoned crawl before but then returned to play with my mode which displayed all those data which I missed in vanilla crawl. Now I am done for sure, I am really disappointed by basic crawl approach when you get 4 lucky shots in a row, then 30 unlucky shots in a row without being able to estimate if it really was luck or not. That makes crawl unplayable for me. Damn, I didn't even know which one of my weapons dealt more damage: +7 crossbow of penetration, +2 crossbow of flaming, +1 lajatang or +7 quarterstaff of speed. I am tired of using wizmode to see basic data.

AC 16/EV 25 is bad vs unknown monster who is "almost destroyed"? Probably it is.
Dancing weapon requires code diving.
- Code:
xl = 15;
speed = 30 - delay;
ev = 25 - delay / 2;
ac = mass / 10;
damage = 2 * damg;
max_hp = mass / 5;
So that battleaxe had AC 25, EV 17, 50 HP, damage 30 and speed 13. Pretty crazy indeed. If I saw my attacks doing 0 damage ("you rolled 3 out of 1-6, battleaxe rolls 15 out of 1-25 and decreases damage to -12") and monster has 10 HP, I would teleport indeed. But all I got was "The penetrating bolt pierces through the battleaxe of draining" and "The battleaxe of draining is almost destroyed." 20 times in a row.

AC 25, wow, what the fuck. I mean I know dancing weapons are crazy buff but I never knew the numbers. I just knew you don't fuck with these things because if you try to fuck with these things you die.

Y'know, it doesn't take numbers to tell you that you should quit attacking something you're not killing. I mean, yes, you proved it is a really bad idea to just keep attacking something you can't kill, but that is a terrible idea regardless. Especially when the target your facing continuously drains your skill points. Considering that you were able to attack "30+" times before you died, I think anyone with any sort of basic sense of how to play the game would disengage from the monster.
It is fine that you disagree with the fact that crawl supplies the player with limited information, but please don't act like your little death actually proves this is a bad design. It does not at all because that death was completely preventable without a bunch of numbers in front of you. You died because you were doing dumb stuff. Maybe more precise numbers would have prevented you from doing that dumb stuff, but one can certainly argue that's your fault and not the game's.

I got that dancing weapon to "almost destroyed" with 4 bolts. Now I know those were extremely lucky shots but there was no way to see that in the game. I like games where I can make INFORMED decisions, where I get excited with lucky rolls (46 out of 1-48) or unlucky rolls (2 out of 1-48). Sorry, but my death proves crawl has bad design, it makes informed decisions really hard without code diving, wizmode, knowledge bot, wiki. I created a patch to display EV for monsters, it was rejected too because watching EV in game is bad and watching EV in knowledge bot is good, this is ridiculous.

I'm pretty sure the fact that you took an additional twenty unsuccessful swings allows you to make an informed decision as to whether or not you're killing this monster.

Are you pretty sure I was using the best weapon?
There are games which provide an easy answer to question "which weapon is the best vs cyan Ugly Thing" at Str 27, Dex 15, Fighting 21.8 and M&F 22.3
a - the +2,+11 giant club "Duppof" {crush, Str+4}
b - the +1,+8 giant spiked club of Execution {crush, Hunger+ rF+ Str+2}
g - the +7,+11 dire flail of Instant Death {freeze, rElec Stlth+}
N - the +3,+5 giant club of the Girdle {freeze, +Fly Stlth}
but crawl is not among them unfortunately.

All of those weapons deal much more than overkill damage to the cyan ugly thing and anything that could possibly accompany it, so you use the dire flail because it takes less skill to get full benefit from it unless you really really need the rF+ and happen to be an ogre.

Sure, you get those messages every now and then. It's still overkill and mostly pointless to try to get more damage that what the dire flail provides (except maybe for zot, given ogre apts and how ogreful your defenses are sometimes, but that's much later into the game and given special circumstances) since the effect is: Things are still dying very fast, but since you keep training offense your defenses are worse than they need to, and so are your hps.

This is what I thought too but it is not correct. +2,+11 giant club "Duppof" {crush, Str+4} is the best (I couldn't enchant it to 11 in wizmode).
It actually surprises me as I didn't do these tests while playing that game and it looks like my swaps to hunger+ item was a bad decision.
Also it's clear that Dire Flail is not overkill, average damage 19.5 is too low comparing to 29.8 (or 30.0 for +11 GC)

Could you be less ironic please? Berserkers cannot/shouldn't train magic, Armour is useless in robe, Dodging is bad with large size and low Dex. The best defense is Fighting and M&F.

That is complete bullshit.
Og have a ton of HPs and deal a ton of damage. Normally that means they invest a good bunch in M&F to be able to dish out that huge damage and stay alive, which makes them have to wait a bit more than usual before getting their defenses straight (except this doesn't really happen but well). The thing is, when you have a plus eleven, branded dire flail you do not require a better damage output and the exp you'd dedicate to M&F would be a lot better spent elsewhere.
Dodging is far from bad on an ogre, too. Even with Be dex you can definitely go places with it.

Yes, that was first dire flail I got.
But any way, bullshit is suggestion to train Dodging from 10 to 20 to increase EV from 15 to 22 (Dex 14, XL 15 of OgBe) instead of training M&F from 14 to 22 to double melee damage. Starting Dodging 2.9 gives EV 11 by the way. In case you insist doubled damage is overkill, no, it isn't. I still failed to one-shot even Ugly Things more often than I'd like to.

There is no way that you are consistently one- or even two-shotting strong monsters with a +11 dire flail. A GSC has the same mininum delay and the skill investment isn't high - +3 apt is really good. (edit: apparently there is a delay difference of 1, but that doesn't compare to the damage difference of 9)
The damage output of the dire flail is good, but until both weapons are so strong that they oneshot all relevant monsters, the damage difference is still meaningful (how much depends on the size of the difference, which, in this case, is rather large). It's important to consistently two-shot ogre mages, elvish spellcasters and other rather fragile but still dangerous monsters, and it makes a huge difference when we start talking about uniques, skeletal warriors, the various giants and dragons, which are all dangerous (when they start appearing) and resilient.

golden dragon typically died in 4 hits by GSC, I think it would be 6 hits by dire flail so the 150% difference in damage remains relevant forever.

What sort of sense does it make to compare weapons you're not even accurately remembering?
Anyway, a dire flail is nothing more than a twohanded demon blade. A +11 branded demon blade is an excellent weapon that kills everything in the game with ridiculous ease and unlike a GSC doesn't need 22 levels but a mere 14 to swing as fast as it possibly can. That is pretty damn high and is in fact a fuckload of experience you're almost effectively wasting and you could be using to get better defenses and hps and evo.

Sure, the GSC has higher numbers. It doesn't matter because enemies still have the same numbers for HPs and defenses, and they're definitely in the range of being beaten into the dust by a +11 dire flail of freezing and I'm honestly astounded you'd defend a position like this. You don't need to kill everything in one or two hits in crawl, you need to kill them fast enough that they don't kill you and that's enough.

If you believe 42.4 damage is so much better than 33.8 when you can beat the game with a well enchanted scimitar then you're just wrong and being a huge moron about this for no reason in particular.
A titan has 87-134 HPs. That's going to die to a couple of swings of any of the weapons being compared regardless and the actual numerical damage output is irrelevant to the effect to the game because its effect is "The titan dies once you swing at at him anywhere from 3 to 5 times" and reducing that to "2-3" is not worth giving up good evasion and more HPs.
Not that I'd expect someone as obsessed with numbers as yourself to understand the basic concept of how much melee damage is enough anyway.

Could you please support proposal to remove Haste? Reducing 3-5 turns to 2-3 turns is exactly what Haste does and you seem not to care about it.

You are talking about how you should basically put exp into surviving (EV, HP) when your damage output is sufficient. Increasing your damage output also helps you survive because the things damaging you die quickly. Just respond to "You seem to ignore the fact that it's better to spend 50% less time in danger than to have HP increased by 22% (10 levels in fighting) or EV increased by 7 (10 levels in dodging). Numbers rule, you know" using numbers of your own (e.g. EV damage prevention statistics), shouldn't be too hard if your position is correct.

First of all, the slower and more damaging attacks are better against high AC enemies than the basic numbers would suggest. Second, this example is actually a great one to support GSC use, because first of all 2-3 and 3-5 is a rather significant difference. Second, the worst enemies late in the game don't care much about your EV, you won't dodge titan airstrike, fireballs, iron shots (yes, I know EV affects them, but ogre EV affects them pretty badly), alich summon hellfire, draconian summon miasma, etc.
This is not coming at the cost of your HP, there is enough exp in the game by far to get M&F 26, Fighting 27. You can also get a decent amount of Armour and a GDA or FDA. If I had the +11 dire flail before Lair I would agree that training Fighting would be a priority. I would not agree that I would use it for the rest of the game because there is enough exp for good defence and offence.

This is an argument for not quitting the game when you can't find a better weapon than a scimitar. It is not an argument for using a scimitar when you have a triple sword/claymore available.

Swinging a dire flail five times takes 2 aut longer than swinging a gsc four and I was being very generous when I made the "3-5 vs 2-3" comparison; it's more like 3-4 for the gsc.
But now this is starting to be weird. Are you seriously downtalking evasion?
First of all, the things you mentioned aren't even the most dangerous things each of those enemies can do with the exception of fireballs from OOFs.
Like, titan's lightning alone is 3d24, their melee is 55 damage. Basically everything an alich will throw at you (OOD aside) will check your EV and they're by far more dangerous than just trying to summon something bad. Not to mention EV helps against ice fiend melee for example which is far more lethal than getting hit by a hellfire burst.
Ice fiend melee I would say is significantly more dangerous than having a drake miasma you, too. Not to mention miasma does in fact check your EV when it is first thrown your way.

I'm sorry but how can you even lump these two armors together when they're nothing alike? In fact GDA basically doesn't even exist until you're deep into the Depths, by a time when any TLA or MDA would've already been helping you survive a lot better. Sure on an OgBe I'd probably take FDA over TLA/MDA if I have any source of rC at all, but that's because of the really high str you already start with making FDA not crap all over your EV and the fact you sometimes don't find a lot of rF or have !res enough left for zot.
Another worrying thing is you speak of "Ogre EV", as if ogres were unable to get good evasion or something. Large size is a malus, and so is Be dex, but it hardly means you might as well wear GDA and have ten EV at XL 25 because of it.

These are all good points about AC vs EV on an ogre and vs titans and liches but I still don't see how that makes using the dire flail that much better. I mean, am I misunderstanding your position: you would recommend using the dire flail for the remainder of the game if you found it while having 14 or less M&F? I mean I wouldn't instantly rush to 22 if I had a dire flail like that, but I would never use it in late Vaults, Depths or Zot. But with a +3 apt 14 -> 20/22 isn't a lot of experience and you will have diminishing returns on your Dodging/Fighting training, so at a certain point the exp invested in M&F would improve my character more than Dodging/Fighting training (see Sandman25's damage numbers).

What I'd been defending would wound up to the following: the dire flail gives you more than enough damage for the rest of the game and allows you to further your defenses instead for a very long time in a situation where a normal gsc ogre would have to be alternating offensive and defensive skilling. The dire flail also allows you to make use of evocations should you've found anything particularly worth training for like a cloak of darkness.
As a Be, would you past a certain point have leftover exp that is best used furthering your offense with a GSC? Definitely.
Will that improvement in damage output actually be a noticeable bonus? It will be noticeable somewhat, but nothing that will change the game anywhere close to having good AC/EV balance and more HPs.
The dire flail already puts you way past the peak of offense the game requires. My point is that once you have it what should be done is training defenses until they're good or very good, and only once you're close to the peak of defenses an ogre needs you should look at M&F again, unless something exceptional shows up.
Mind you, tying back to the game we're talking about, the vamp gsc he refused to use was the sort of exceptional thing I would train M&F for. Not only it carries the benefit of bettering your offense somewhat, it also makes your offense into another type of defense by adding the ability to heal up while killing the dudes.

That vamp GSC almost killed me first time I tried to use it (Depths 1, I am low on HP because of Yaktaurs/Deep Troll Earth Magi and I am teleported away to lich etc) and killed me in Zot second time I tried to use it (I rejected to swap to rElec weapon for too long and could not be hasted).

You often get GSCs off ogres and the only enemy that can use a dire flail around that depth is Edmund... so you generally get a GSC before a dire flail.

I have just tried using AC 15, EV 17 with great mace of protection instead of GSC of venom and got really disappointed by damage. Almost dying to 2 Leeches and Vampire Mosquitos is not good.

Sure you find GSCs more often and not every dflail is +11 and branded, so you obviously want the GSC in most cases- however after the recent M&F "nerf" any random orc warrior or wight can have a dire flail instead of a great mace.
