CIP - L13 HEIE - best yet, need advice

I'm currently running with the best character I've had yet, he's level 13 and cleared over half of Lair and the first level of Orc. I've gotten to see monsters I haven't seen before, cast spells I've never seen, get to the entrance to other branches besides Orc and Lair... I'm very excited! But also being very cautious now (almost out of healing/heal wounds potions!). This board has already been a treasure trove of good information and advice, and that's helped me a lot!

So, yeah, I'm looking for any and all advice for this character. I picked up as much stuff as I could for the character dump, so that's why he's overloaded. I try not to even be Burdened while playing, so don't worry about that.

Some specific questions...
1) Should I be thinking about forgetting some of the lower level spells yet? Freeze seems pretty useful still due to its low mana cost, and I'm not using Ice Beasts much but I've never played with summons much so I probably just don't really know when to use them. So those are two spells I could forget soon.
2) Which of the other spells should I work toward? I'm thinking of memorizing Swiftness and Levitation now since I have the levels for them. The books that Vehumet has given me seem to not be as useful as I thought they would be. I'm not sure if anything in the book of Power is worth getting, and the only spell in Annihilations that looks good is Ice Storm.
3) I assume my sabre of speed is better than the scimitar of Pallin? Should I hang on to the scimitar of holy wrath for any reason?
4) I also assume the cursed artefact boots aren't worth wearing, due to the -3 and Stealth--?
5) Skills: Does it look like I'm on the right track? Am I missing something?
7) Which branches would you suggest I progress through at this point?

I feel like the RNG isn't being very generous, but I'm not really sure. I haven't found a buckler (I'd like to train shields), or any gourmand jewelry, and have only found three artefacts. Only 2 shops and neither had much of interest (the food shop was nice when I was running out of food, and there are still some rations left to buy if needed, the other shop was mostly heavy armour).

Anyway, feel free to school me on anything else, as well! :D

You need to start thinking about what you want to do against higher level monsters that resist cold in the deeper levels.
Maybe branch into Earth (Stone Arrow / Iron Shot / LCS)? You've got high Conjurations so casting Stone Arrow should not be a problem, just need to pump up the skill.
Or do you plan to boost your melee skills?

1) I'd keep freeze simply because it's only a single spell level and will out damage your melee if you're in a situation where you're forced to be adjacent to a creature. Can't comment much on the summon spell, though.
2) Swiftness is a spell that you will use throughout the entire game. There are two buffs that my DEWz kept up at all times: Deflect missiles and swiftness. Levitation isn't nearly as important, but it's useful to have if you don't need the spell levels. Mephitic cloud, however, will be vital for when you tackle Orc. Just remember to turn off poison once you get the first skill. For a less immediate suggestion, once you find a book that contains a low level translocation spell I'd recommend victory dancing that skill as well (But I'm a huge fan of the warper class and can't live without their mobility, so I'm a bit biased here).
3) I'd stick to the artifact for general wear and switch to the sabre when you have some xp to train fighting (Turn small blades off).
4) For the early/mid game you're correct but they may see some use in the end game if you haven't found good resist gear.
5) Skills look pretty good at this point. You might get some conflicting advice about spellcasting/hunger issues, but your current numbers aren't bad. Just turn small blades off as mentioned earlier (Assuming you're going for a pure caster).
6) I'd finish off Lair and then move on to Orc with mephitic. Just remember to always have swiftness up as that's your only non-consumable escape mechanism (And be extremely cautious around fast creatures). Be even more careful around Orc:4, possibly even bypassing it for the time being (Haven't tackled the new vault on a caster yet). Hive's another option if you encounter parts of the other two branches that you aren't comfortable tackling (rPois and mephitic will make it near trivial).

I'd avoid burning a bunch of xp by skilling up earth/fire/poison in order to damage creatures with high cold resistances and just rely on cold spells with that can only be partially resisted (Icicle). Another option is to grab IMB from the book of power, but that'd cost precious spell slots. An air subspec is another possibility as you'll need a modest investment there for haste and deflect.

Oh, and drop stuff in a stash somewhere as your overloaded status will get you killed. I use Temple, others use Lair:2.

It isn't important to forget unused spells unless you have something else that you want in those slots. Freeze isn't bad as a holdout weapon for a good while, since it deals damage that is quite good when you're on your last couple mp, and it also slows many dangerous monsters. Ice Beasts is probably obsolete for you by this point, particularly if you haven't been building up summoning.

Vehumet's book gifts are less useful for ice elementalists than most other casters, because ice elementalists have the ridiculously good Throw Icicle spell. Bolt of Cold you've already learned, but you might consider Poisonous Cloud as well. Abjuration is definitely a good pick, once it comes in. Vehumet's passive abilities are still good enough to make her competitive with Sif Muna and Kiku, though, even with an ice elementalist.

Yes, pick up Swiftness for sure. Levitation is situationally useful, too, but keep an eye open for Flight since you have Swiftness already. Watch for books with Blink or Haste, and train for those the moment you get your hands on them.

The sabre of speed probably deals more damage now, but towards the endgame monster AC inflation means that speed brand on a light weapon will just let you do nothing twice as often as normal unless you have a decent slaying bonus available. Scimitars are long blades, so they train a weapon skill that is going to be more useful long-term. If you can find a katana or double sword at some point, you're set, but I've used a scimitar of holy wrath to clear the post-endgame and it did just fine.

Ultimately, though, you're a primary caster so your main weapon doesn't matter much. Train fighting on rats and mimics and blast anything marginally threatening with magic.

I probably wouldn't use them right now. The -3AC means that you'll take an average of an extra 2hp damage every time something hits you with anything, and there isn't as much that will throw elemental attacks at you yet. Later on, if you're still short on resistances it becomes a more reasonable trade, since frost giants and ice dragons can hit pretty hard with their elemental attacks. The first pip is more important than the second or third. I usually set stuff like this in a special pile in my stash, just in case I need it sometime.

You might as well turn off conjurations. Ice Storm won't be castable for a while, so you might as well put that xp somewhere that it will be immediately useful. Spellcasting, if nothing else.

Finishing Lair and Orc should probably be doable, unless you get a particularly nasty end vault in which case you can just leave and come back later. You have rPois for Snake, so as long as you keep out of Snake 5 and treat anacondas seriously you should be fine there. Hive is super-easy for you but pretty non-essential. Exploring the Dungeon down until you find the entrance to Vaults is also reasonable. Shoals 1-4 with Levitation is probably fine, too, but keep Repel Missiles up at all times and don't fight in shallow water.

Naga sometimes spawn with shields, so if you can't get to Elf 1 you might try one of those to see how bad the casting penalty is for you.

This is great, thanks for all the incredibly useful information! I'm about to jump back in and see how it goes.

@hxy, no I'm not planning on boosting melee skills, so I'll definitely try to find some other means of hurting cold resist monsters. Perhaps a little Air magic, as Ashery suggested, along with Throw Icicle.

@Ashery, your answers are all very helpful. I had planned on skipping Mephitic Cloud only because I thought it wouldn't be very useful at higher levels, but I'll definitely pick it up now if it's good for Orc and beyond. Also, as I said in the OP, I was only Overloaded because I wanted to show as much as possible in the character dump.

@KoboldLord, your replies are awesome, thanks!

Based on everything posted here, this is my current plan:

* Ditch Summon Ice Beasts and learn Swiftness and Mephitic Cloud (I think I'll wait on Levitation in case I find Flight. I have a couple Levitation potions anyway). I'll definitely be looking out for Blink and Haste, and work up to Ice Storm and Poisonous Cloud.

* Start using the artefact scimitar and turn off Short Blades (and Long Blades when I get it). Keep the sabre of speed handy for training Fighting.

* Turn off most of the spell skills until Spellcasting gets higher. Work up Air a bit.

* Keep working on Lair, then head to Orc. Maybe check out Snake and Hive. Basically, what KoboldLord and Ashery suggested.

Well, I died. But I did so well! I cleared Lair and Orc:3, had just cleared a bailey and was trying to take some stuff back to my stash on Lair:2 when a stone giant cornered me. Swiftness was not enough to let me get away from him (probably because I was burdened, and I think it expired anyway before I noticed) and he killed me as I fled up some stairs. He seemed to resist every spell I threw at him, too. I was also Burdened due to trying to take stuff back to my stash... probably a bad idea. I think I panicked a little... I could have used a teleport or blink scroll and didn't. Despite trying to take it slowly and cautiously, I still haven't gotten over my panic problem, hehe.

Anyway, thanks again to all of you who replied, it was all really great advice! Hopefully I'll do better next time! :)
