YASD: brimstone fiends are more durable than balrugs

Hello everyone, i'm new around here but i've been lurking for a while.

I've previously managed to win 2 times with 3 runes (with a CeHu and a DDGl) and i've decided to move on and try to win with 15.

My current character is a black DrCj with a focus on air magic but i've tried to keep a balance of conjuration, summonings and utility and i've cleared the main dungeon, vaults, swamp, snake, elf and crypt (and of course lair and orcs).

Now i'm at a loss about where to go next: i'd like to stay off Zot because i don't really feel like the idea of facing a stray orb of fire and get some nasty mutation until strictly necessary and i don't know what is the "natural" progression for a 15runer. Also i'm a little concerned about my food stock which is sort of small... despite my casting not being very expensive (i only use tornado once in a while) i'm not sure if there is something i should do about it in the corpse deprived areas i will face.

so my questions are:


A) what is roughly the best order for my character to explore next? (possibly avoiding zot)
B) what should i do about food in the next branches? (consider there is a food shop i haven't touched yet back in orcs)
C) looking at my character dump, is my skill progression good for what i'm about to face? should i start working on something else?

Learn summon butterfly (or demonic horde) and charge into Zot for EXP. If a mutater shows up, get butterflies up and run away without turning back. But really, Zot is the LEAST likely place to mutate you now among your choices - everywhere else has the threat of mutations. This shouldn't be a problem for a summoner who has a million things standing in the way.

Where's Chain Lightning? You have 0.11 veh so the Annhilations book should have it. Learn it... though you can't have an army while you use it. But then, the same can be said for Tornado.

This character is fine to go into extended - Slime would be a good starting point (beware of shining eyes if you don't have rMut). Ideally you want to cast Charm yourself but that haste wand will carry you for some time. You will also want cBlink later down the line. More Evo so you can CBoE (with channeling staff backup) to continuously cast.

After Slime, you'll want to hit Pan so you can keep finding permafood. If a level is annoying, just run away from it. No need to grind your way through a Pan level that regulraly spawns uber things.

i have some scrolls of recharging in my stash so the wand will do for now, thing is i found a ton of books but nothing with haste or cBlink in it unfortunately so i try to make do with regular blink (with or whitout cTele)...

chain lightning is that powerful? i know it is painful because of nikola... but i had limited slots for spells and never got around learning it and it seemed redundant with OOD already on my list to blast single targets.

summon butterfly i didn't think of, this is the first character with summonings i rolled so i don't know all the tricks, i'll go see where i left that book.



At the moment i can only think of 2 situations where i really was just a step away from death:

- The first time i appearently angered Khufu in the crypt, torment+smiting from him and a greater mummy he was with left me at 3 hp before i managed to break LOS and run away to lick my wounds. Next i introduced him to 2 tentacled monstrosity & company.
- The second time i got banished to the abyss by some elf but i was pretty confident by then in my ability to deal with anything entering my LOS by running or shooting... until i got "dragged" to a new region of the abyss just in fron of a tormentor and a hellion. My teleport decided to take a while to kick in and they managed to get me down to 10hp before it got me out despite my running/blinking away.

Any specific suggestion to deal with tormenting enemies? Every time one shows up it always gets really hairy.

1. Pick them off one-by one. A single fiend is going to hurt you a lot less than two fiends.
2. rN helps quite a bit: each levels subtracts 5 from the % of hp that torment cuts. So with 3 ranks of rN, torment will cut 35% of your HP instead of 50%.
3. necromutation gives torment immunity, but don't be in lichform when the situation is going to call for DDoor or Borg, and beware confusion and statrot since as a lich you can't quaff curing or restore.

As a side note, it's really good to be able to recover yourself quickly for hell and abyss, since enemies are getting thrown at you pretty constantly. Regeneration is really helpful for this, and you'll want a means of channeling (staff of channeling, sublimation, cboe).

Uh, OOD became redundant when you got chain lightning. Dealing with torment is about striving to only have 1 torment-spammer in sight at a time, and killing that one spammer very, very quickly. Chain Lightning one-shots fiends at close range. The alternative is lich/statue form but that really isn't an option for you - you needed to have been getting Tmut and Nec/Earth throughout the game, which is a somewhat restrictive playstyle. DDoor and Borg are much more reasonable ways to cope with torment/hellfire but you lack Nec right now. So since you don't have any real defence against torment/hellfire, your only option is to kill very fast which you shouldn't have a problem doing (especially when you can spam Haste).

hmmm i guess i should get some levels in nec then at least for regen, ty for the advices: chain lightning and butterflies are doing wonders for me.

meanwhile i managed to go through the slime pits just fine (altough some corrosion went through but no big deal) :mrgreen:
it also netted me a cblink book so i'm working towards that now.

managed to get an abyssal rune too :D

now i'm wandering around pan... already got shoutitis2, berserkitis1 and fast metabolism1... damn neqoxecs >_>

pan lords i've met to this points were pushovers (but i had already some taste of fighting them during ascensions) and tormentors are a bother but chain lightning kills them too fast for them to get 2 torments in (or even 1 if alone). only scary moment i had for now was routine-summoning an air elemental and it decided to turn up hostile. wouldn't be a big deal if in the exact same turn a shadow fiend didn't come up xD

ok so things happened:

-learned regen, cBlink and borgnjor's, hope i'll never have to use the latter.
-lom lobon is dead: it was sort of easy due to OOD kiting and tornado when it blinked up close... for whatever reason it didn't use ice storm, guess i'm lucky.
-cerebov is now guarding an empty castle: a combination of cBlink, cTele and being a chicken helped here.
-found a random demonic rune: it was sort of nasty because my entry point was really crowded but 2 random teleports eventaully landed me soemwhere safe where to start taking out the bad guys a few at a time

out of all of those the scariest time was being pursued by a random pan lord who could keep up with me despite haste+swift and had a reasonably powerful anti-magic branded attack... i also learned that pan lords DO follow you to new pan floors if they so happen to be close to you and the floor i got to was lom's one.
i was a bit scaried using a random tele on lom's plane with my mp fully depleted because i didn't know what to expect but it turned out fine and i had no other good options to lose that pan lord... i never saw it again, i guess it now guards the empty castle of lom.

now that the game throws a tense situation at me:

I entered a new plane and i got greeted like this: Gloorx Vloq moans, "Taste defeat, thou rank saucy efter!"

on dis 7 things suddendly went downhill but i had an escape route open so no problem! right?

wrong... just as i was about to dive-out into the vestibule hell decided to spawn a brimstone fiend next to me: my hp is in the deep red by the time i'm back to the vestibule and the brimstone followed me through.

i could have cBlinked away (there was a convenient corner) but i was close to glow status because of some previous hell effect and didn't feel like risking it. could have borg'd but i was confident i could zap the brimstone fast and didn't feel like losing more hp than i had. turns out 2 chain lightning didn't manage to kill it while he happily finished me off.

still, got me much further than any other character before :D

hell effects are really nasty however, i don't think anything else in the game goes close to being randomly tormented+tier1 demon spawned next to you in the same turn while you are busy with hell sentinels and the likes, not even tomb was such a rush.

Did you have potions of Cure Mutations in your stash?
I am not afraid of glowing when I have 2 Cure Mut in my inventory and 4 more in stash.

Even without cure mut pot available, remember that a lightly mutated character can still easily be a YAVP (especially if strong like this one), while a character who don't blink a right time usually became a YASD.

Furthermore, light yelllow glow has a decent probability to decay without adding mutations (50%? I don't remember), and rmut adds another 50% of resistance from glowing source, so the probability the character has to remain genetically pure is actually quite high.

Anyway, hell's effects can be really nasty - they're one of the main reasons hells are considered the worst branches in crawl. However, a mage-character with a reliable way to channel mp - regen + sob or a staff of channeling are enough - and a bit of melee skill usually shouldn't have big problems there.

I notice that of the two Chain Lightnings you cast, the first grounded out without hitting anything, and the second only hit the Brimstone Fiend once before grounding out. I don't know if that was just bad luck, or some property of the terrain (metal walls?) - but I have also experienced this spell performing very poorly in the Vestibule, so it could be something to watch out for.

Welcome to Borg and cBlink dilemmas! This is why DDoor is part of the recommended "save my life" package. It takes courage to use Borg every time it's necessary but when you're roaming in extended, having a fat HP bar is no longer meaningful. Excess max HP is just another consumable when you have Borg, one you use to get Charms up for Haste and DDoor.

Hmm, well spotted. I'll do some Wizmode testing later tonight to see if metal walls affect Chain Lightning.

It looks like Chain Lightning has 1/10 chance to ignore monsters even if it is first target for the lightning.

yeah i guess it could have been the metal walls, if it is then it's a mistake born from inexperience but i don't really think it is, after all i used the same spell *inside* dis and it worked fine overall. i really should have borg'd there (looking better, i don't think cblink would have broken LOS?) but i just somehow thought 1 more lightning would do the trick and didn't want to make my first dis dive a "nothing accomplished, some hp lost". Didn't expect a brimstone to spawn just by the exit either.

Next time i'll start working on necro earlier and get a wider package. Only had 1 cure mut stashed btw.

PS: so the code is in C or similar to C derivate? cool, guess i could look stuff up for myself then.

If you doubt a cblink can take you outside a foe's LOS, you can always an exclusion over him: if you can blink out the marked tiles, you're "safe".

Furthermore, I tested in wiz mode using a character closed in a metal wall tomb with only 1 tile open: after one-shooting a single brimstone fiend ten times in a row, I can suppose metal walls have no effect on chain lightning - you were just very unlucky.
