This was supposed to be a throwaway character made up when I'm way too tired to be playing my main (MiPr). I lack Tr experience.

I get a Wand of Haste on D:2 and I have 3 recharge scrolls already. There goes my plan to go Chei and go super-smite with portal projectile -> large rock. I get SInv and rF+ rings early and it's always nice to know rMut got found even if I won't need it for aeons. So I've been infused with a lot of luck on this character, meaning I need to contemplate the future carefully.

First, i need a god plan. I am thinking of 3 options:
A) Oka -> Kiku/Zin, hope to get some dragon armour from Oka earlier than I'd normally get one, then ask Kiku or Zin to keep me fed in extended
B) Mak -> Kiku/Zin, rely on Mak to blow up ranged threats then same as A) for extended
C) Ash, just beeline for 3-rune win while relying on Ash to buff my magic skills

I'm leaning towards A) but I need a couple details to be sure: 1) does Oka gift large rocks? 2) Is portal projectile -> large rock a feasible way to deal with ranged threats that will inevitably make my life miserable in the lategame?


Second, i need a skill plan. I've just hit UC 10. I'm thinking to grab a few levels in Fighting, some Invo if my god needs it and then push for UC 15 before starting to work on dodging. But given I've been putting points into Int, not sure if dodging will be worth it given my abysmal Dex. If I successfully skin a dragon hide of any kind then I can pump up Armour but that's not until later. Much as GSC is awesome, I am going to stick with UC as my melee skill. At some point I need to train up Charms/Transloc/Air so I can have cTele, RMsl, Phase Shift, Swiftness and Haste online. Throwing will get some priority first though, unless I'm with Mak.


So there's my game plan. Criticisms? Addendums?

God plan:
The ones you've mentioned are fairly good, although the chances of getting dragon armor gift from Oka is pretty darn small, I've never gotten a dragon armor gift from Oka before finding one in the dungeon, Large rocks are a potential ammo gift *but* throwing has the issue of you might get large rocks, or javelins, or darts, or even needles, I think I have gotten darts about 3/4 of the time too (Dunno how patient you are)

An alternative to those that you mentioned is to go with Jyvia, I love Jyvia with a unarmed combat specialist, many of the mutations he gives you increase your unarmed combat damage, and he lets you cure bad mutations and he feeds you, passively and ALOT, and you can slimify your hands, turning them into claws of "make that thing into an ally/blocker for me"

My favorite way to deal with ranged threats is with cBlink or even cTele+Blink.

Also shields are VERY worth it with an unarmed specialist troll, they help a great deal (particularly if you can find a nice one with resistance or reflection) defensively, and they don't drop your unarmed offense very much at all (once you've got enough shield skill you're looking at losing 0.1 AUT 1/2 of the time) with a non-unarmed user, typically restricting yourself to one-handed weapons kinda sucks, but unarmed is already one-handed, or well, sorta, shields do slow down your attack speed a bit, but with some skill it's not a problem, and Trolls, being large need less shield than a medium-sized race to eliminate penalties

In terms of skill training, the unarmed skill is MUCH more useful offensively than fighting, although fighting does help some (and gives you more hp, which is the main reason you should train it) but more with accuracy than with actual damage, unarmed both directly impacts the base damage of your attack, AND bumps up your attack speed, dodging will ultimately be worth it, but you'll need a LOT before you see the payoff, most times I dump a ton of points into it all at once sometime later in the game.

Throwing is unfortunately the worst damage skill in terms of the bonus damage you see from it, Large rocks are great for thrown weapons, but the difference between a thrown rock at skill 5 and at skill 20 isn't very large, it does help with accuracy a bunch though. The main problem is that thrown weapons, just like spells always take a full 1.0 AUT, so you'll never throw enough rocks to kill large baddies, or kill sufficient numbers of hordes to prevent them from getting close to you, and once they're next to you, an Unarmed attack is *SO* much better. Throwing will help you use portal projectile to nuke orc priests and other pesky things that are behind the hordes, but it will never be a primary attack, so I wouldn't invest much into it until later, when you're kinda stuck on what to train

Spell wise you should probably look into blade hands, and possibly statue form and/or dragon form, as all of those spells give you a significant power output boost (Just *being* a troll gives you a huge boost to unarmed combat) (If you do branch into earth for statue form, be sure to get stoneskin :)

So, Wizmode testing shows Oka gifts dragon armours but after a plethora of junk weapons, robes, hats, cloaks and shields. But then, Oka shouldn't be picked for gifts, Heroism would be a bigger boon on a Troll (bad aptitudes) than a Mi and Finesse would mean I can save my Haste wand charges for non-attack purposes.

Hmm I had forgotten Jiyva feeds you too yes, but that's an endgame conversion. But I still need to pick a god NOW to get me to Jiyva.

On that note, yes there are a number of skills that would be 'good to have' but that's not quite what I asked for. I need to know what I should train RIGHT NOW.
- I can disregard Throwing based on your advice: I can throw large rocks just fine with 3~5 Throwing skill and rely on Portal Projectile for accuracy.
- Fighting does improve the damage multiplier almost as much as a weapon skill, it's just that UC is different to weapon skills in that it ALSO improves the base damage.
- Shields actually do interfere with 'unarmed combat' because it denies me my off-hand punch, which I read is 20% of a troll's damage output. They're still nice to have, AFTER I have a solution for ranged combat.
- Anything Tmut is almost out of the question (until deep in extended) for a Troll that's already got plans for Charms/Transloc.

I have a tight EXP budget. I need advice on the immediate priorities. Longer-term priorities can be figured out later. Wizmode testing shows I'd need 7/8 Charms/Transloc to have cTele 'acceptably online' for my Int and Spc. "Do I get cTele online now or do I get more UC?" is my first question.

Where you are in the game right now I'd go for UC first (At least up to 15ish) Unless you are specifically heading for somewhere that has a lot of ranged combat baddies (like say Elf, which I wouldn't do yet if I were you) If that's the case get the spells online first. Really, with careful tactics you shouldn't get ambushed with lots of ranged problems you can't already handle until you do Elf, Vaults, the last level of Orc, or get below D:17 or so (Wherever it is that you start having to deal with packs of Yaktuar's with captains) A few other places might be minor problems, but if you're being careful and using your abilities, Ranged pests won't bother you too much.

Offhand punch is about a 1/6 chance of an extra attack, which gets about 1/2 bonus from skills (a little more than 1/2 damage) than a main-hand attack would, Which is about 8.3% more damage (Larger percentage bonus with less skill), less against critters with a decent AC. Given how fragile Trolls are, I always felt like the trade was worth it :) But yes, definitely a "later" thing

[[ Edit, just re-read the code, it's a 1:2 chance followed by a 2:3 chance (not a 1:3 chance) so it's actually a 2:6 chance of an extra attack, which makes it more like 16% extra damage before AC application, I still maintain that shields are ultimately worth it ]]

And yes, fighting does give about 80% of the bonus damage that a regular weapon skill does (with none of the speed bonuses, making it IMHO about 40% as useful until you hit min delay), but UC is actually about twice as important as a regular weapon skill, if not a little more. I usually train 1 point of fighting for every 4 points of UC. (I typically train about 2 points of fighting for every 5 points of a weapon skill until I hit min delay, with a non-unarmed fighter)

I personally would probably go with Makhelb if you are planning to switch, his wrath is very survivable if you're careful. Healing on kills means less resting means less food spent, and summoning demons means fodder to get in the way of pests you need to get closer to or get away from ;) Although Oka's Heroism+Finesse isn't a bad trade for Makhelb's demons+conjurations+healing. I've found Oka's wrath to be *slightly* more difficult to handle than Mak's but maybe that's just me.

Although... If you have an altar readily available and you plan on going with Jyvia it might be worth it to do it now, scum all the junk from early levels to max out piety real quick and go grab the loot from the end of slime, that's actually more likely to get you an early dragon armor than Oka anyway (Not to mention nice books lots of wands and other nice goodies.. just make sure you have digging available and paralyze the jellies before they eat the goods.) Hm, Tempting but perhaps not worth it yet.

Ultimately went with Oka in the end. I'm a Wr, so I shouldn't need fodder to get in the way of ranged attacks once I have cTele online. As if answering my needs, I find a staff of wizardy. I prefer the upfront "+5 skills" over "charge up your piety lazor and rampage in some hard place for bonus EXP early" together with "Oka likes quality over quantity in sacrifices".

A steam dragon showed up but did not drop a corpse.

Now in the Labyrinth with 7 meat rations. Time to test my maze luck.

Update: Excellent maze luck, I get 2 rods out of that as well as some jewelry. Also, a cyclops kindly donated 3 large rocks.

Update2: Komodo dragons are scary. They are being killed with poison cloud rod or invisibility. Hydra solution is cTele and evocations spam - an ice cave gave me 3 wands of frost (after my big nuke rods are spent).

Update 4: Moment of emergency cTele out: orc high priest summons a Neqoxec right as I get into melee range. No need to risk being malmutated... though getting into Contam to do that wasn't the coolest of moments. No mutation from it though. Otherwise, the Orc:4 "badass orcs guarding the 4 shops" vault wasn't so bad. Got an rPois ring out of that, so I can eat even more meat now.

Evo is at 7 for the sake of rods. Got shields at 11 now as Oka gave me an AC large shield. Dodging is at 10 and I have swiftness online with wizardry. Time to push UC to 20. Used an EXP pot to get to 7.7 Fighting.

Training Dodging from 1.9 to 10 changed your EV from 10 to 12. Wouldn't it be better to train another skill instead?

That's just how the dodging skill works - you don't get anything until 10 and then you get a return beyond that. I have Heroism, this investment makes me get some EV when I Hero up. Also works with the agility potion.

That's ... not how dodging skill works at all (not in a robe, anyway). However you should notice that Psieye also equipped a shield between the two dumps posted here, and he does not have enough shield skill to eliminate the EV penalty.

Still the dodging levels only give ~3-4 EV but that's because he's a troll with 9 dex.

Hmm that's a point, on a Mi with plate it'd take 10+ to see EV go up by more than 1, but then afterwards it'd give more steady returns. Big Guy with Low Dex is still seeing a somewhat consistent return on EV as I'm levelling dodging.

And yes, shield is at "will eliminate all EV penalty when I Hero up". Will eventually train shields to 15 but for now I'm comfortable relying on Hero to 'finish it'.

None of the dragons I killed ever left a corpse. Instead, I just FOUND this steam dragon armour in a minivault. I want FDA or MDA before I put scrolls into it though. It IS a good reason to start training Armour though.

UC 20 (+5 Hero) - Troll punch is awesome.

Super Smite (aka Portal Large Rock) is excellent for sniping off Bad News, e.g. Ogre Mage with potential banish. Having said that, rod of venom (poison cloud) is better at this job where applicable. Now that cyclops are a regular thing, I'm getting a surplus of large rocks and it's very hard to mulch these things. I gotta throw more!

I wouldn't completely discount dumping the scrolls into Steam, it does make casting super nice especially once you get Haste etc and also for you the UC benefits. I used one on this guy all the way through Slime Pits (found an unrand that I liked marginally better in the Slime 6 trove) even though when I first picked it up I was thinking the same as you, that I'd just use it as a placeholder until FDA etc. Maybe less feasible with troll's size penalty to EV though , I guess.

Good luck w this guy, portal projectiled Big Rocks sound like they'd be pretty badass.

It occurs to me that I'm wading deep into Vaults when I haven't even touched Spider or Shoals.

Thank you Frederick, for wandering into a narrow corridor where Poison Cloud has maximum effect. You were at half HP by the time I saw you again outside and I had hasted Super Smites raining down on you. He did make me use a Tele scroll to escape him the first time, so he did achieve something I guess.

After around 5 dragon corpses, I finally have a (+4) FDA. Can't wear it right now as I still want cTele online (45% fail chance with wiz staff). Hmm, now would be a good point to go hit Lair sub-branches for some EXP. cTele not so essential for those places.

Update: Scratch that, just did Crypt. Well, Crypt:1~3 then dived down to Crypt:5, read mapping and apport-ninja'd the loot out of the "2 ancient liches are itching to escape their cage if you walk towards the loot" ending. I now have a rod of the swarm. Not useful until after I abandon Okawaru.

Much more importantly, I got a ring of sustenance at Crypt:1. Also, Oka gave me a neat stat-stick: rC++ rF+ for when I'm positioning myself or Super Smiting.

cTele online with +5 FDA, now to pump some Charms so Swiftness is too. That and it's prepartion for Haste/RMsl anyway. Oh and I learnt Confusing Touch, not sure if I'll have EXP budget to get Hexes for that.

Update 2: OMG, I blew up an orb spider by throwing a big rock at its orb of destruction. It had just fired so the ensuing radius 1 explosion hit the spider.

In other news, just cleared all of Spider. My Charms has gone up 3 levels for that.

Shoals:4 had Nikola. I didn't want to bother with him just yet so I ditched him. No rush.

I went back to Crypt:5 to punch those ancient liches. The first one went down fine, but the other one's spellset was more troublesome (Bolt of Cold). I ditched it.

Boris warranted drinking a Resistance potion so his bolt of cold wouldn't hurt me much.

Did my usual thing of invading Vestibule as soon as I clear D:21. My initial berserk charge was stopped short by a scythe of distortion dumping me in some remote corner. On my rematch with Geryon I noted that Hell Beasts can't swim, but I wasn't in a good enough position to make use of that fact. cTele blinked out and rested up. On round 3, nothing interrupted me and Geryon failed to summon beasts fast enough. As for that distortion reaper, he failed to cut his way out of a portal'd throwing net in time - fear the mighty throwing net!

Anyway, time to move my stash from D:18 to Vestibule and then farm Dis so as to not waste all the living meat left in D:21~Zot:4. Or maybe I should farm Cocytus after taking off this Faith amulet and putting on my rC++ amulet... I wish I had an enchant armour scroll handy to make an IDA after I inevitably get a hide from Cocytus.

... Oka just gifted me an evening star of AC. Wrong character Oka, wrong character.

Update: Ok, Torment is a bigger problem for big guys who are meant to use their HP as one of their defences. Gave up on Dis because Hellion + Torment is bad news (I need to be punching shit as soon as it shows up, not spending a turn or two buffing up first). Cocytus is more hospitable though I'm wearing an rC robe instead of FDA here. An evil minivault spawned: the fire/ice demon one. It meant I was facing hellions, balrugs and a brimstone fiend in Cocytus. NOT AS PLANNED.

Finally learnt Teleport Other just to get rid of mummies while I'm with Oka - they'll die to the rod of swarms once i switch gods.

You may have picked up from my MiPr and previous CIPs that I don't even consider dipping into Hell to be "doing an extended game". While I do have 2 sustenance rings now, they are for travelling long distances, not for clearing Hell levels. This means yes, I do go hungry fast. But D:22+ has a lot of living meat anyway so whenever I'm hungry I pop back out, stuff my stomach then go back down again. I'm more concerned about my piety given all the Finesse spam ("A Fiend comes into view!") going on but I don't plan to stick with Oka long-term anyway. I don't need any gifts anymore either, I have my armour.

Hmm I should do Elf actually.

Update: And that's Elf done. Yes I got sent to the Abyss once. No problem, I'm a troll so I recover fast from the Zyme threat. I wonder when's a good time to switch to Jiyva. Once I run out of Oka piety in Cocytus I guess.

Update 2:

Eh screw it, gonna just finish D and Zot:1~4 then convert. Oh and got the Abyss rune (and teleportitis 1) while trying to burn off Oka favour. I either need an enchant armour scroll or an excuse to take off this Faith amulet and I can go back to farming Cocytus.

Oka gave me a Storm Dragon Armour. This is his last gift because I just dropped down to 4* so I'm going to ditch him (after farming what I can in Slime).

I teleportitis'd into Mara. It's sad how Mara never got to do anything except melee (oh and a couple useless blinks).

Found myself at Coc:7 while trying to burn through Finesse. Went to Tartarus to continue the training from hell. Have enough Charms to go buy a book and learn Haste.

Right, time to do some stash cleaning so as to minimise losses to Jiyva worship. Oh, I should do something about the V:5 party first.

Update:

Brought 200 arrows and fed them to the starter-jelly when taking up Jiyva. Got up to 5*, hmm I should have brought a hundred more arrows to get to 6* and thus, the Slime vault.

Oka wrath ambush parties obey the same rules as Hell reinforcements: you get 1 free turn. This is important, as it lets you choose the location of your fight carefully.

- Cast regen (on top of the Ring of Vitality already worn)

MY BRAIN! I HEAL 100 HP PER TURN!

Procedure:
- Pull targets so they'll round the corner in some 5 turns. In this case, I used Wand of Disintegration to open the door to Antaeus' throne room from far away.
- Drop 100+ stack of bolts/arrows.
- Request jelly.
- Go fight while jelly takes several turns to munch through the stack.
- Laugh at how torment has become meaningless.

I just killed Ereshkigal after a long fist fight while there were 3 tormentors in sight and I had a bad position (5 dudes were hitting me at once). Nothing mattered, her 20+ demons all ignored the death ooze (formerly a mummy) that was munching away at 200 arrows. I still had 100 arrows left after I teleported out of there. Mind, all the non-artefact loot behind Ereshkigal's throne was all eaten by the time I got there, but I'm beyond the point I need loot anyway.

Yeah if I'd known how awesome Jiyva heals are, I'd have gotten Throwing to 8 in this game and collected the hundreds of darts I'd be showered with.

Since food has become meaningless, I should really just finish D and Zot. Not feeling like doing all of extended, though I might TANG every greater mummy in Tomb:3 for the sake of it... Nah......

Update:

That's Zot done. As usual, being swarmed in open space on Zot does bad, bad things to you even if you could bulldoze through such situations in D. Moment of WAT when I healed 200 HP in one turn on the exact turn I was worried enough to drink a heal wounds pot. Yes, there was a jelly on my bolts, it just took its sweet time getting there.

Lack of rElec was a nuisance in Zot - sure I had resistance potions for elec golems but there's plenty other elec sources there. Much as fly helps mitigate, it still hurts.

Hmm, further observation: this feels like a bug. I put down a 300+ arrow/bolt stack and I get healed 300 HP on one slurp. The game sees big stack and goes 'you get big heal' but it doesn't remove the stack all at once - it can only remove a handful each time. Thus the stack is still mostly intact for the next turn when it goes 'you prepared a big stack again, big heal'.

I've never played a Jiyva worshipper, but is this potentially too easy to exploit? Maybe the amount of healing should be relative to the weight or value of the items so you can't just get huge amounts of healing from stacks of common junk.

I actually did go and TANG Tomb:3... Jiyva piety is effectively infinite with arrow/bolt stack. Every greater mummy was simply slimed. I was sent into penance once as I got blamed for a death ooze dying - must have been because I swapped places with it on the turn it died. That was on Tomb:2 - I had to run out of that place without the Jiyva heal. Once I was out, I just dumped the consumption stack in front of a neutral jelly and penance was very quickly over.

Naturally, the consequence for slimeifying Tomb:3 was the absence of loot in one of the treasure rooms. That feeling when you fresh-walk into a treasure room and find it completely empty~

The only notable event during the orb run was when I had to go back downstairs and try another staircase because a Hell Sentinel was camping. Probably could have killed it or just tanked it while walking past but there was no pressure from the floor below.

Procedure:
- Pull targets so they'll round the corner in some 5 turns. In this case, I used Wand of Disintegration to open the door to Antaeus' throne room from far away.
- Drop 100+ stack of bolts/arrows.
- Request jelly.
- Go fight while jelly takes several turns to munch through the stack.
- Laugh at how torment has become meaningless.

It was a bug that got promptly fixed when I reported it a few days ago. Should be interesting seeing how they balance up now.
