CIP: DeFe choosing spells and such.

After meeting frustrating ends with several wizards & conjurers, I decided to give DeFe try. Though the character is fragile as ever I found it easier than the two mage classes I've played. Was actually surprised to find my character down at Lair:8 already.

And now I've gone mid-game, I feel I need all the help I can get. Looking for 3-rune win for starters. Vehumet gave be few books, and I'm now beginning to wander what spell I should learn, and how I should continue with my skill progression (for example: should I raise armor as well now, and raise fighting bit more?)

I wanted to learn Iron shot to take out elemental resistant foes, but I trained air magic, so I don't think it's gonna be that effective. Last time I've used IMB, it didn't look that impressive. Looks like I'll have to go fire+air, though I don't know if that will work. Is that okay? Or should I learn iron shot anyway?

p.s: is there any way to make going down stairs less scary as a mage? Right now I summon mammals whenever I go down stairs, but I don't think that will work when I go Vault:8. How do mage character clear that? I don't think stair dancing and getting hit by vault guards several tiles is a viable tactic for this guy.

For a 3-rune game, your DEFE is probably going to stay in light armour (i.e. leather or robe), so no point wasting xp on Armour.
Vehumet will eventually give you Fire Storm, so I'd suggest you prepare for that - level up your Conjurations and Fire. As a side effect of that, you can power up Iron Short using Conjurations alone. Pick up a Staff of Conjuration if you come across it.

One way to handle the V:8 entrance is to use cTele + Blink. That gives you semi-controlled blink, and you can choose the direction and head down one of the corridors (I hope you're familiar with the V:8 layout? If not go watch a few games). Once you are far enough from the crowd, they will be easier to handle.
And yes, go learn cTele & Blink ;)

I just hope I come across spellbook that gives me both spells. And yeah, I do know vault layout too well. I'm too used to playing MiFi now (I think I played over 40 MiFi before I eventually won) and have a bad habit of automatically assuming that stairdancing will work on any character. Found out the hard way when my last DeFe got one shot by Rupert while climbing stairs.

Actually by the time you get to V8 it's not unusual to have both Firestorm and Haste on a DEFE, in this case you can killl most guards right off the stairs. However, a char with Haste and FS is not going to have any problems in a 3-runer at all, so by that point you are already ready to win :) javascript:void(0);

So, the Iron Shot is the best way to deal with fire resistant monsters for DEFE? I am looking at Book of Power right now and wondering which one to pick...

In normal game, I prefer poison arrow over iron shot: the former deals over all the same (or maybe even a little more) damage than the latter, but it also poisons the foos, letting to kite them 'till are dead. In extended iron shot is better.
As the op is going with air, also chain lightning it's terrible effective and funny to use, against both enemies' group or single, stronger, one. Anyway, it's obviously more expensive, mp and xp-wise, than iron shot or poison arrow and it's surely an overkill for a DEFE.

Regarding Vault:8: for a character with weak defense, it's even better to head downstairs with an active teleportation, mapping the floor and c-tele somewhere in the external corridors, starting to kill dudes guarding the entrance from here.
