YASD - DDAK owned by Nessos

After losing good characters to incredible stupidity, I tend to try crazy builds. Rather than going easy, I go hard. After seeing Blade's post about this combo a while back, I settled on DDAK. And I can see why it's a hard build. I spent the early levels running from ogres and orc warriors, using up my heal wounds potions and 2 scrolls of recharging. But then, the game decided to be incredibly generous and gave me shop with a book of necromancy and a staff of death. So here I am in lair with a very promising character, and I'd like to not screw up this chance.

First of all, are there any good rues about keeping guys around to drain? I have a snail trapped in a room in lair, but how often should you leave guys around to drain? My bigger issue in general is how to build this character. My Necromancy is currently pretty high because I wanted to get vampiric draining useable with my shield. My biggest weakness is a lack of good ranged offense, and poor magic ability with anything that isn't necromancy. Conjure flame seems like good way to improve my offensive ability once I get it working, and good shop generation gives me plenty of options.

Heh, I'm also playing a challenge DD. Appreciate the company.
I've never done the drain farming approach to DD, so I can't help you there. I ran a DDNe who ended up playing like a EE with necromantic allies (died in Zot 5). But with Mahkleb I only used vampiric draining vicariously on living enemies throughout the dungeon. Nearly everything in lair is alive and drainable, so I wouldn't start worrying until deeper dungeon levels.

However, why is your skill learning so diffuse? Maybe start focusing with shields to eliminate the casting penalty if you're that worried about it. Especially if you are going to casting route and planning to broaden you casting options.

Slings can work great for ranged, but you are going to need some skill levels. Focus if you go that route. I'd suggest doing spells instead. There are some strong conjurations in the book of power.

Spell-wise, agony works great in the lair if you have Death or Wizardy anywhere. Most things have low MR and half or 1/4 of a hydra/death yak/black mamba is better than a full one. A ring of wizardy can ease the pain of the shield penalty until you eliminate it. You don't necessarily need ranged skills if you use enough undead meatshields (animate dead, twisted resurrection, simulacrum). Deflect missiles and Haste are practically must haves (Enchantments), but will take some serious skill investment first. Don't forget to haste your allies - no glow and very useful. Conjure flame is more defensive than offensive (stops most intelligent monsters in their tracks, but others will move into or through it). Passive offensive is probably a better way to think of it. You can't cast is on an enemy, but in an empty space so it takes a little planning to use efficiently. You really need the ring of wizardy or lighter armour or higher shield skill, and probably all three to really swap this character into a proficient caster. I think it could be work it, though.

Your armour is terrible, is that the best you've found? If so, darn. Nearly any dragon armour is better, or at least something with a better resist or enchantment level. rPois isn't as great for DD as on other builds (and you can drain back what little damage you would take from Pois anyway). See if you can still cast in a heavier armour, if not, consider swapping out just to drain farm and wear plate/splint (plate if you have it) at other times. The GDR makes a big difference if you go the melee heavy route. I think you should cast more, so consider focusing on dodging over armour until you find dragon armour if I can convince you to go that way instead. A robe or leather with a good resist and much higher dodging is probably a better idea until then.

What is your melee plan? Are you going to be using staff + necro + evo or sticking with flails? An eveningstar or demon whip of distortion would be lots of fun (but no more staff of death switching). If you are fighting close quarters, you really want to get your weapon skill up and to min-delay (consider making this a first priority before the rest if you want to be melee).

You'll have completely removed the spell penalty from the shield at 15 shields, which may be a bit off, but there isn't any point in over training necromancy when you're going to train shields to 15 eventually. Unless, of course, you intend to get higher level necromancy as well, in which case it could be useful. revivification could give you some extra hp, I suppose, but I'm not really sure it's worth it. you probably only need vampiric, possibly dispel undead.

My skill training is often all over the place because I don't care to micromanage it, but I can stop training a few. Conjure flame is actually a great spell I use a lot. The point isn't to create an obstacle, it's to get them to go into and stand in it while they're attacking you. For a hydra, put 3 or 4 in a line leading to you, and by the time it gets to you it'll be near dead and running away. The rPois armor I'm wearing isn't that great, but I don't think it's that bad. It's mostly useful in lair though because spamming vampiric draining with low spellcasting makes you hungry, and not having rPois cuts the number of edible corpses in half. It's not dragon armor, but how many people have dragon armor in lair anyway? Technically the best armor I have so far is +4 splint mail of fire resist from a volcano, but splint mail isn't that great and my casting has enough problems right now.

I kept training necromancy because I'd work my way to the necronomicon, but I guess I don't really need that just yet. Death's door sounds like it could be useful in an emergency though. Haunt + sustain abilities doesn't sound bad either.

Well that sucked. I even managed to get a +2,+2 vampiric demon whip and a +1 ice dragon armor. I knew the rF- would hurt me, but I thought my ability to recover HP from the whip would balance it out. Nessos helpfully demonstrated why this was a mistake. I was planning to get out of there, but he hasted himself, and I went from half HP to dead in a single double-action. I was not expecting that at all.

Yeah, Nessos with rF- is bad news.

That said, he got off 4 arrow shots with a blink in between. Were you trying to just walk away?

The first turn I tried to polymorph him. It's a strategy that I've used before and works well. He's much less of a threat polymorphed into something that can't hold a bow, and even if he turns into something that can, he loses his double-branded arrow cheat, so they'd just be regular poisoned arrows. Naturally he resisted, but after he used blink I thought I could get my iron troll skeleton between me and him. However, I misjudged both his firing angle and damage output, and that was it.

Nessos is a dick, no questions about it. However, his MR is very low (36) and his HD is pretty low too (9, same as a centaur warrior) so magical effects and meph/blowgun needles are very effective on him in comparison to how dangerous he is. Fear and poly would both have a decent chance of working on him, or you can just tele away when you see him.
