CIP now YASD --> Mortarion, MiFi of Oka

Hey guys, this character is rolling by pretty well right now. He passed up to D:9 without any trouble so I decided to start doing Lair and Orc. I cleared the first two floors of Orc then ran into Gastronok, so I decided to tackle the early levels of Lair. Unfortunately I ran into a Hyrda on Lair:4 (I think, either that or L:5) that Heroism couldn't take down and an obscene amount of electric eels. On the plus side I gained a few levels so I went back and killed Gastronok, then started clearing the rest of Orc. I went down to Orc:4 to find the alternate staircases to the earlier levels and ran into a few bands of Orc Warriors and Knights which depleted my potions of Curing (for a small HP boost that ended up buying me enough time to use a scroll of tele to disengage) as well as my staff of Tele. I cleared out some smaller bands of Orc about 5 minutes using Heroism and found a Whip of Pain. Now my question is: should I use it instead of my Orcish Flail/Mace? Neither the flail or mace are very good (Mace is +2/-1 and flail is -1/+1), but I wasn't sure the Pain brand would be much use to me since I don't have any Necromancy levels. Is it worth it to switch to the whip, considering I already have min delay for it, or stick with the flail/mace?

EDIT: Small update, it turns out the Whip of Pain is +0/+3, so it's more accurate than my flail and does only 1 less damage. I might stick with it.

UPDATE: Now level 13, I've conquered Lair:7 and I'm about to go back to Orc to clean up 1-3, then do the main Dungeon until ~12 (hopefully), then clean up the Orc and Lair branch ends. Reached min delay for whips, maces, and flails, and I'm still using the whip of Pain (which is now +1/+3 thanks to an enchant weapon 1 scroll). I managed to actually get a couple of useful gifts from Okawaru, finally, so I'm gaining more and more steam now. I've eliminated the penalty for my shield after getting Shields to 16, and I got Armor to 11 not too long ago. After getting Fighting to 16 I'm planning on going back to Armor for awhile, since ATM it seems like I have plenty of HP. Actually, now that I think about it I should start raising Traps and Doors. Suggestions?

UPDATE: Lair:8 is done. I decided to have a peek since I was there and ran into mainly rats and elephants, which I destroyed without using Heroism very much at all, maybe 3 times. The real challenge was the Dire Elephant that reared its ugly head while I was down there. On to Orc:4!

Congratulations! I'm honestly impressed that you managed to kill death yaks with such a crappy weapon!
To the point, damage is far more dependent on the base damage of a weapon than the enchantment bonus (has to do with the damage multiplier due to skill). With your levels of M&F, nearly anything is better than what you are swinging, including the flails in your inventory. I'm surprised you haven't run into a spiked or dire flail yet between both Orc and Oka. Try cntrl f to search for them. Look for morning stars and evening stars too (if you're lucky). Hopefully Oka gifts you something better soon. Also, pain is a completely useless brand without necromancy. Not that it matters, you should be using a better weapon anyway.

Skill wise, traps and doors is useful, but I would suggest investing in invocations first. You want finesse reliable, as it is very powerful. Also, even though mino aptitudes are terrible, and spellcasting in heavy armor is hard (I.e. costs extra skill levels for the same casting success rate as light armour) consider getting some of those utility spells (repel missiles and swiftness) castable. Being faster and not being turned into a pincusion by centaurs/yaktaus is very nice. Good luck and happy smashing!

Thanks! I took your advice and raised Invocations until 7 so I can reliably use Finesse. I also stopped using the whip and started using a +3/+3 Morningstar I found lying on Orc:4. I've also started raising spell levels until I can use Repel Missiles, though for the time being my God Gifted +2 Large Shield of Reflection solves that problem.

UPDATE: On a whim I went down to Swamp and cleared it relatively quickly. Having an artifact rPois god gift made it a breeze, and I found possibly the easiest rune chamber, containing only several swamp dragons and drakes, along with some hyrdas. I now have the Decaying Rune and might make my second venture into Snake now that I have 2 rPois items and more strength under my belt. I decided to forego training spells until I eliminate the penalties on my Shield, and possibly get a few more Armor levels for good measure.

UPDATE 2: As we speak I just received my first Demon Whip gift from Oka, "the +8/+2 Demon Whip of Psior {vamp, Str+3, SInv}. Is this a worthwhile weapon to use all the time, or will the hunger cost resulting from the vamp be a problem going forward? Does the vampiric brand increase base hunger cost, or just have the one-time hit?

UPDATE 3: Just got another Demon Whip from Oka, this one a +6/+5 with an Electrocution brand. Worth using over the artifact?

Update: Well damn, that's it for Mortarion. Got taken down on Elf:5 via Lehudib's Crystal Spear, right after I used a tele scroll to disengage. I'm pretty pissed, seeing as this character was the only decent one I've had in a long string of consecutive early deaths and how it was completely my own fault for biting off more than I could chew. However, this was also the character I've had the best approach with, and I utilized stair dancing and other defensive tactics to their full potential.

Yup.. Elf:5 is one of those places you'd want to visit later in the game.. especially with all the monsters that can banish you (you're only "somewhat resistant")

Yeah originally I was gonna go and clear out what I could find around the stairs, then move to a different branch. For some reason I stayed and tried to duke it out with the really heavy hitters. Even looking back on it now I don't know what I was thinking when I went in there so soon.

Elf:5 is insanely dangerous. It's like the whole dungeon -> orc -> elf 'natural' progression is designed to kill off the unknowing.

IMO, you trained up spellcasting too early. Instead you should have gotten armour up more and started training dodging. I also wouldn't train T&D that high in general on a non-squishy character but it's within the "reasonable" range.

That said, 78 damage is pretty high to take and a teleport on elf 5 might not save you anyhow since it seems to have the annoying habit of dropping you in the big room.
