YAVP DsCK of XOM 15-runer mutant
So, yesterday I started my 206th (!) game with a DsCK. As a pure Xomite I play all my DsCK games with the obligation not to forsake him (even when abyssed at low levels), and with melee only and absolutely not spellcasting (I let him handle the spells). Finally it worked !
Earlygame went very smoothly thanks to an early amulet of rage which allowed me to cruise through most uniques. Xom was not too nasty with me and I didn't get surrounded by uniques or instakilled during a fight. He was pretty resilient on giving me good gifts and mutations though, and I fought with the starting mace until Orc 4. He gave me a permanent ally for a while though, who defeated Saint Roka all alone, and then Xom turned him into a Lorocyproca who, being invisible, completely fucked the autotravel (You sense a strange disturbance nearby) and I had to leave him. He also gave me an early shoutitis which somehow lasted for almost all the game (Touret Demonspawn)
In the mines, I found almost all of my armour in the shops : Gauntlets of War, sweet ! Boots of running, sweet ! +8 ice dragon armour, swwwweet ! but still no cloak, shield nor decent weapon. Xom also sent me to the abyss, but the swiftness mutation made it survivable.
From that point on, things got really easy. 50+ AC thanks to the ice armour mutation made me cruise through the whole dungeon levels, and when I started dabbling in the vaults, Xom got excited and gave me crazy mutations. At some point, I had rf+++ rc+++ relec rpois ctele gourmand rmut breathe flames 3 and swiftness 2 just with the mutations. With two rings of slayings and and strong demon whip, nobody could resist me. In Snake 5, I got banished again, but no big deal.
This was the turning point of the game. I should have cleared a whole ziggurat at that moment because it didnt last long. After a few hellish runes, he got bored again and slowly removed all the nice mutations, ultimately giving me berserkitis and slowness for pan with absolutely no resistances (he removed rElec just before Lom Lobon
). I'm glad he couldnt hit the ds mutations though, as the 60% torment immunity got insanely useful in tomb and against most pan lords.
In the end, I even got the deformed body one but it wasn't such a big deal : a +14 crystal plate mail is still awesome even when the natural ac is halved. I tried to clear a zig for the fun but inadvertently left it on level 11 or something. I guess I would have just stupidly died if I went on.
A few lessons learned with Xom :
- Don't stupidly walk around those islands full of melee demons in the early game. He WILL swap you with one of them.
- Always carry royal jellies or potions of restore abilities : 2 or 3 stat drains in a row can be very problematic.
- Wear warding or life protection whenver you can : he drains a lot.
- Don't dive into Elf 5 thinking you can clear the level and leave the chamber for later : he will teleport you right in the middle of it (this was a very close one)
- Always carry alternative items for the muts or protections you have for other ones : rElec will be removed just before Lom Lobon, and you will grow horns in front of an orb of fire if you have a nice rF+ helmet...
