A Veteran’s Retraining Character #1

Hello everyone, it’s your former n00b who is returning to DCSS after completing a second tour of duty, played the entire Fighting Fantasy gamebook series, trying to survive the pandemic, and failing hard in this year’s TNNT in Nethack. The second tour of duty was comprised of exploring the roguelikes IVAN, Sil, and Pixel Dungeon, all of which I flunked hard in, especially in Pixel Dungeon. After that, I took the time to play all 59 Fighting Fantasy gamebooks once, but never managed to win a single gamebook due to bad luck and stupidity on my part. Surviving the pandemic was costly, as most of my time was devoted to ensuring my survival, as I was not prepared to deal with the extended complications that a pandemic brought me. Finally, I tried a random character in this year’s TNNT. The character turned out to be a female chaotic human Monk, who suffered a grisly death at the hands of a giant zombie due to utter stupidity on my part as well as a combination of other unlucky circumstances. After all of these events, I am returning to DCSS.

This is currently my roguelike resume:

Outstanding Nethack experience: Managed to ascend every role at least once in 3.4.3, and still have an excellent playing record in the 3.6 versions.

Exceeds Expectations ADOM experience: Achieved several ultra endings back when it was free and before Steam came into the scene. Haven't played the Steam version due to pricing though.

Exceeds Expectations DoomRL experience: Fully won the game several times, but only up to the Ultra-Violence Difficulty (I like being able to save my games, thank you very much, so hard pass to Nightmare) and even managed to obtain two Diamond Medals from my efforts there.

Acceptable Angband experience: Killed Morgoth after 5 attempts (all 5 characters of which were generated with random stats rather than a point-based roller).

Acceptable ZAP'M experience: Won a couple of games, but I got bored of that real fast.

Acceptable Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup experience: Escaped with the Orb in a 3-rune game as a Demigod Fighter after 4 attempts with randomly generated characters in version 0.23.

Acceptable Brogue experience: Escaped with the Amulet of Yendor once after 10 tries.

Acceptable Rogue experience: The deepest I got was level 16 I think.

Poor PRIME experience: Haven't made it into the robot town.

Poor Elona+ experience: The farthest I made it was in Act 1 to Lesimas: 30 after 4 tries in Loss mode. Much of that was due to the difficulty understanding the mechanics as well as the inability to deal with its stupid thirst mechanic.

Poor IVAN experience: The farthest I ever made was the first level of the Gloomy Caves after 4 tries.

Poor Sil experience: 350 feet was the farthest depth that I reached after 4 tries (all four characters had randomly generated stats, races, and house however due to my inner nature). I basically got owned by the difficulty of Sil’s monsters.

Dreadful Pixel Dungeon experience: I did not even reach the first boss after 4 tries, as I was only able to reach Depth 3 before getting killed in humiliating ways.

Despite my previous success with DCSS and some common sense when it comes to roguelikes, my knowledge is rusty, and I do not have a lot of knowledge with the game’s latest version. It is with this desire to get my skills updated that I bring you a series titled: A Veteran’s Retraining!

In this series, I will attempt to win a game by playing a randomly generated character. In this series that I am starting, the number before the hyphen signifies the attempt that I am playing, and the number after the hyphen signifies the goal that I have finished. I will be playing online for these challenges under the same name (wizard44). All characters I post will have started by having reached the Ecumenical Temple to get rid of very early deaths caused by inexperience. Other than that, the milestones will be the same as that of my previous “Complete N00b’s Journey” series. For this first character, I randomly generate a Barachi Summoner for my first character. With that, I bring you:

A Veteran’s Retraining: Part 1-1

I begin by training just the Fighting, Spellcasting, and Summoning skills, with a focus on Summonings. On D:1, I acquire a Book of Displacement and an Everburning Encyclopedia, which provides me with Conjure Flame and possibly Teleport Other and Sticky Flame as spells to learn in the future. D:2 gives me a ring of see invisible, while D:3 provides me with a +0 war axe of electrocution. Upon reaching D:4, I read my unknown scrolls and find that I have a scroll of blinking and identify my potions of degeneration (which I drop) and curing (thank goodness).

At D:5, I have a close call, when a Howler monkey wakes up a two-headed ogre and a centaur. I barely make it to the staircase thanks to my hopping ability, as the adder manages to poison me and the centaur gets several lucky shots at me. During my recovery attempts, I end up using the scroll of blinking to fend off an attack from a two-headed ogre. After recovering, I attempt to summon a lightning spire, but fail and summon a nameless horror, which makes clearing the level all but impossible. I find an amulet of regeneration, and try to escape upstairs, but fail to do so before having the nameless horror. With desperation, I fight the nameless horror, and surprisingly win the battle. I then proceed back to D:5, and kill the two-headed ogre with summons. I then get a wand of iceblast, identify my potions of heal wounds and lignification, and take on Crazy Yiuf, which my summons kill. I get his cloak of stealth and put it on, and also pick up a +1 mace of venom in his room. I also find the entrance to the Ecumenical Temple and save the game with a huge sigh of relief.

Should I choose Sif Muna, Kikubaaqudgha, or Cheibriados? I heard these three gods would be good for this type of character, but I am willing to entertain other options. I am leaning towards Sif Muna, but I have not found Sif Muna or Kikubaaqudgha’s altar yet. Which brings me to my other god question below.

If the god of choice is not found, do you generally try to wait to find that particular god’s altar, or make another choice based on what you found in the Temple before diving down any further?

Do I learn Conjure Flame, Teleport Other, or Sticky Flame, or should I save my spell slots for other spells that I could run into?

Which skills should I set for training? Right now, I am actively training Fighting, Spellcasting, and Summonings, with an emphasis on Summonings. Should I work on training weapon skills or other spell skills, assuming that I learn any of the other above spells? Is Dodging worth training at this point, or is it a waste?

Is it worth keeping/training a ranged weapon like a shortbow, or would I be spreading myself too thin?

The next goal for this guy is to clear the dungeons up to D:11 and prepare for the Lair of Beasts. My current character’s status is posted below. Let me know of any other tips that I should at this point.

Assuming I don't have some specific god in mind (eg when I was approaching polytheist I'd, obviously, hold out for a god I hadn't won), I ask myself - have I found a god that's good for me? Take it. Have I found a god that's viable for me? If so, how likely am I to die if I keep going in search of a better one?

Even given that I additionally avoid gods I've won recently, I think it would be very unlikely to leave the Temple godless. Something good has usually turned up.

Here I think you have lots of good options, especially given froggo's very solid apts. Xom aside, you'd be walking away from your 9.8 Summonings with Oka or Trog (although you could totally pick either here and win), allies will burn with Qazlal and get in the way with WJC, and IIRC summon damage doesn't pump Usk piety. If you like play with allies, Yred is a very easy 2 1/2 runes and your own spells would cover you for a while in getting the murder katamari rolling on new dungeon levels.

I would certainly learn Sticky Flame, it's hilarious.

You're running out of summons to learn, and already have lightning spire at 16%. It looks to me like - depending on the god you take - the time is coming up to train something else. In many cases, that something would be Fighting, Dodging, and Axes; most allies work best when you fight alongside them.

(Spellcasting affects spell failure 1/4 as much as the average of the spell schools, so if your sole aim is to get a single-school spell online, train it when it costs 1/4 as much as the school; a two-school spell, train it when it costs 1/2 as much as the cheaper school.)

Thanks for the replies everyone. So the Barachi summoner died since I did not realize that I could not use healing items while in berserk mode.

YASD #1: Berserk and stupid really go well toegether.

After consulting the replies as well as Discord, I selected Yredelemnul as my god, learned the Summon Guardian Golem and Sticky Flame spells, and train Fighting, Dodging, Fire Magic, Conjurations, and Air Magic, with an emphasis on Air Magic. At D:6, I read-id scrolls of magic mapping and enchant armor, which I use to enchant my gloves. I also find a wand of flame and identify my potions of might. D:7 was host to Joseph, which I escape from and run into a steam dragon. I have a very close call when my guardian golem blows up in my face and race back upstairs to heal. I find a +4 ring of evasion and a wand of acid, and identify my potions of flight. I begin training Axes and Armour and also find Harold, who luckily was in a narrow room and fell victim to my summons. I get his +3 scale mail of willpower and make a note to increase my strength at the next opportunity. I then identify my potion of berserk rage and kill Joseph with my summons and my wand of flame. I also find an amulet of magic regeneration that proves useful in summoning creatures, a staff of poison that could serve as a last-ditch rPois source if needed, and find and read-id a scroll of enchant weapon that I put on my war axe of electrocution.

At D:8, I identify a potion of invisibility and get a Great Wizards, Vol. II book and a book of Decay, both of which does not give me a better selection of spells. I also find a +1 ring mail of cold resistance that I put on for better protection. D:9 has a scroll of fog which I read-id and a book of Scorching, that provides me with Scorch, Flame Wave and Summon Cactus Giant. I also find two scrolls of enchant weapon and enchant my war axe of electrocution. D:9 had a scroll of brand weapon that I read-id to brand a +2 shortbow that I picked up from a centaur to a shortbow of freezing. D:10 had another close call when a basilisk’s petrification gets me and forces me to take heavy damage from a wyvern before I can escape to safety and take it out with Sticky Flame. It is there that I find the entrance to the Lair as well as some acid dragon scales and a Book of Dangerous Friends, which does not give me any better spells to choose from. On D:11, I identify my potions of mutation and brilliance, and run into a phantasmal warrior. I roll the dice and quaff a potion of berserk rage, not realizing that I could not heal my character or read scrolls. After getting cornered, I quickly fight the phantasmal warrior in a desperate attempt to survive, but end up getting killed in the process.

So I will be restarting with a new character soon through the joys of random generation. Hopefully I do not do anything stupid as this again.
