I have never played Tm before. What should I train? Was Oka a good choice?

I usually have Ice Form castable before entering Lair.
Oka is one of the best gods for Tm because it means you can either have great attack/defense or get spells earlier depending on what you choose to train. And finesse is always great.

Oka is pretty much always a good choice if you are just looking to win. Sometimes there are better options, but Oka is never really bad if you are going to spend a lot of your time fighting in melee.

For now, learn Blade Hands, train Transmutations if you can't cast it reliably yet, and chop everything up with Blade Hands. Also, get Ice Form as well once you have the spell levels, since it can be useful for slowing down cold-blooded monsters and dealing with ice-susceptible monsters. Also, don't sit on the identify scrolls - use them up. Since you didn't choose Sif (probably not even a particularly great choice for a melee-based DrTm anyway) there's no telling when/if you'll get Statue Form, Dragon Form etc., so if you can cast Blade Hands, just train UC, Dodging and Fighting roughly in this order of priority IMO. Should be simple and straightforward.

Oh, and Ctrl+F gloves, boots and cloak, because if you didn't get any so far, well, you're pretty unlucky.

Edit: I'd just train Dex all day. You don't really need Strength that much since you won't be having encumbrance problems, and you don't need Int that much because you can cast your starting spells easily with this much Int and it's a waste IMO to train Int for spells that you want to be casting well before battle anyways.

Malevolent's advice is good, just make sure to squeeze in like, training one or two levels of invocations skill early (for heroism) and then 8 or 9 at some point after finesse becomes available. I would definitely increase dexterity every three levels on this character.


edit: ice form is imo the best form in Lair, in general, as everything dangerous there except uniques can be slowed by cold-based attacks.

Died, when I went down to D:10, pulled up a yak and fought it until I reached half health, then I escaped up to Dl:8, which I thought was cleared, but an orc warrior with a trident of venom was right by the stairs. It hit me and poisoned me. I quaffed a haste potion, and tried to run, but the orc hit me twice, and I died of poison. Should have used a scroll of fear. I need to use those more.

just wondering: would you train shield for a transmuter? I guess no because it gets melded everytime you use your magic, but this way defenses are really low, don't you think?

My current DgTm uses warlock's buckler, it is still useful for autoexploring and does not cost much XP. Also statue form does not meld shield so it is ok to use shield in extended.

So Oka is a fine god for transmuter, but I prefer Chei because a lot of transmuter damage is based off of stats, and Chei will let you swim in stats if you can deal with the slowness (basically once you get blade hands online he gives you +20 damage on your fists).

For stats I put stats into int until I get to 15 and then keep strength and dex about the same (they are useful for different forms).

For stats with Chei I always pick Int. There is step down for Dex after 24 and you don't need Str higher than 23 or so either. Int is useful because you can get spells faster and at higher spell power.
