Some time ago I suggested a new "!h" inscription to avoid hitting hydra with weapon which adds heads. It looks like another inscription like "h" can be useful too, it means you get a warning when attacking anything except hydra.
Sorry about your loss, I often lose characterd the same way (my last was a Fo in Zig who attacked with UC after trying a weapon).

Yeah, I've begun to reassess "never chop a hydra" too. You can certainly get ahead of it with a good enough weapon.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and suggest that yeah, a +2 morningstar is not the best weapon to use to take on Aziul, but "I used a suboptimal weapon" is not really the cause of this death.

Also why are you carrying 3 ?EA scrolls while wearing +0 boots?

With the battleaxe, my damage output may have been high enough to take out aizul. I have read many people advocating for early use of enchant weapon/armour scrolls, but then you won't have them for enchanting endgame gear, and I have managed to get through the early game several times while hoarding the scrolls.

It might; it might not. Calling a bro and burning !Might might have been better than zerking. Were you taking him 1v1, berserk from (near) full health at the beginning of the fight?

It's pretty likely you won't find boots better than regular boots, and anyhow: AC now is better than AC later. I wouldn't enchant terrible armour, but vanilla boots and rN plate are both good enough for endgame.

I berserked from full health, when there was 1 square between us (lured him around corner first). The game only called him "dangerous", and not "extremely dangerous", so I did not BIA.

What "the game says" is not always important, Aizul is basically ever "extremely dangerous" when you meet her without rp.

Spend your ea scrolls. It took me a while to learn this as well, but it is really better this way. It can help a lot if you enchant your early stuff and your vanilla boots to max, even if you'll find +1 boots of running the 1 ac lost late in the game will basically never kill you.

Hydras are difficult when you first enter lair. At XL17 for a melee dude and with that battleaxe you should probably just kill them with your best weapons. When playing Be's or comparable I'm always baffled how difficult they are when you initially meet them and how weak they are when you finally enter swamp. As BE you still have panic buttons if things go really wrong.
