You'll want your morningstar at minimum delay as soon as possible; that should always be your first goal as a MiFi. Go ahead and bring M&F up to 16. I believe it says in the interface now what skill your weapon reaches minimum delay.

That Ice Dragon Armor isn't bad but you should find yourself something else. Unless you wander into an ice cave, right now where you're at rF is more important than rC any day, and you're hurting your rF by using that IDA. I highly recommend some kind of enchanted plate. Oka should gift you that at some point, or barring that you should be able to find something sitting around. AC is very important.

That shield is pretty nice, but don't train Shields past where you have it unless you end up with a large shield. A good large shield is pretty hard to find, but consider upgrading from that shield if you find something that'll let you get higher AC. +2 isn't the greatest.

While it's good to have the escape option, spending EXP on Blink may not have been the best choice at this stage in the game. It'll be better for you to get your Invocations and especially Evocations up. Things like a box of beasts, bag of spiders, phial of floods, etc are all super excellent resources, and much better in a pinch for you right now than blink. You're a MiFi, and with the proper equipment and speccing you're close to invincible straight through both Lair branches if you play it right. Leave escape to tele scrolls and blink scrolls for now. (But if you plan on tackling extended, you'll definitely want that blink.)

In that same vein, when building your MiFi you'll want to focus on your melee skill, then getting some fighting and armor/dodging, then invocations. You should have invocations up to about 15 by near the end of the Lair; it makes Okawaru's stuff last a lot longer, and you'll want it to about 20 or so if you want to switch to TSO for extended (which I highly recommend if you want to tackle extended.) Don't raise any skill above 20 though; it's a gigantic waste of EXP until you get to extended where it gets poured all over you.

You're doing pretty decent on the whole. Keep it up and you should have three runes in no time.

I'd be wearing amulet of faith and the +2 slaying over see invis. You can swap to see invis when you need it.

The big int boost from your weapon and the reasonably low encumbrance of your armor does help spellcasting, but, as Queen Cassie recommended, I'd prioritize getting M&F to 16, then finesse reliable (~9 invocations or so IIRC). If there are other useful evocables around, I would then train evocations. If not, I'd wait on that. (Phial is really good, but if that and a wand of disintegration are all you got, evocations can wait longer.)

Shoals is pretty dangerous. I'd do Spider next; you will be swarmed by melee-only enemies. Abuse stairs in response. Once you have moved away from stairs to explore the level, keep close to a wall and make kill-holes if you are in danger of being surrounded. I hope there are some more wands around, because orb spiders are pretty annoying otherwise. Fortunately, having some SH helps in that department.

Why not go over 20 skill levels as a Mi, if you have fighting, Melee, armour and diving at 20 and your not using invo/evo then I don't see why not

See that's what I thought too, but it has to do with how how much XP it takes. It takes more XP to get from 20 to 27 than it does to get from 0 to 20.

Notice that M&F isn't above 16, where my weapon hit minimum delay. Dodging and Armour got to the point they were around one of the Lair branches and stayed that way more or less all game. Shields and Fighting are at 25, yes, but the only reason Fighting is at 25 is that it was what I threw XP at during the very tail end of my run, after I didn't even need XP for anything anymore, so I just let it pile it up there. Before I did that it was sitting at 20. Similarly, Shields sat at 15 because that was all that was needed to eliminate the penalty for using a Shield, right up until I got that nice +6 large shield off of Mennas in Pandemonium(which was also my very last equipment change, around my 7th rune or so.)

Similarly you'll see I raised Invocations and Evocations to 20. I did this fully by about my first rune, because both of those are extremely powerful. Okawaru might not require too high an Invocations skill just to get Heroism and Finesse to work successfully, true (I believe no more than 7 or 8) but the higher the Invocations skill, the more effective Heroism and Finesse become, by loads, double or even triple the benefit time. And if you do choose to go TSO later, you'll NEED that high of Invocations to use angel buddies. (Angel buddies are like the best thing ever.)

Evocations are something I strongly recommend you use. Those wands you keep picking up are pretty powerful, and you'll only be able to use them on monsters successfully with high Evocation skills. It also makes things like Haste or Heal Wounds work more effectively on you. The evocable items, like a Lamp of Fire, or Box of Beasts, are wicked powerful at high evocations. I would've died in Cocytus, for example if I hadn't had a Lamp of Fire to kill a pair of Ice Fiends that were tormenting me from a distance. And I'd used various others, especially the bag of spiders, to great effect before then. Summons are so unbelievably powerful in this game and all of these items are effectively free summoning tools in addition to having other powerful effects. You'll want them.

20 in your primary skills of Fighting, Armor, and Dodging is all you need, as is the bare minimum of M&F for your weapon (in this case, 16.) With Shields just train it to 15 and that'll be all you'll need there too. With proper tactics the extra HP you'd get from 27 in Fighting versus 20 in Fighting is just more of a margin of error, hardly even necessary, when compared to the tools that things like Evocations give you. And you just don't have enough XP in the primary game to afford to raise anything to 27.

Thanks for that, I haven't tried extended as I'm just trying to get a few 3 rune games under my belt and in my opinion if you go trogthere is no reason to really use wands

That's fair, that's fair, but I still recommend using wands. Evocations can be even more powerful in the short areas you'd be running for a three rune game. Zot in particular will be pretty nasty.

If nothing else, what I'd recommend you try to do is get enough so you can save some resources for your Orb run. In particular, having a source of haste you can chug straight away to get out of Zot will be very useful to you. As a MiFi it will be very difficult for you to sneak in there without clearing out at least one lung of hostiles, so you'll need the extra firepower that Evocations can provide.

It's your choice, of course, but they can be unbelievably powerful if used properly.

With oka it makes sense to branch into a magic school. His skill boost allows you to branch into magic early, and you never need to cap those skills.

Going to want a decent amount of EV and SH before you start training if you go that route. I try to aim for 20 or 25.

Isn't it a thing anymore that one should train 5 less skill levels of Fighting, Weapon, Armour, Dodging, and Shields than needed with Oka? Since the idea is to spam Heroism.

In general, 2 handed weapons are better than 1 handed ones, as shields are not that good.

If you find a nice shield or nice 1 handed weapon then shields are actually not a bad idea
