Full health to -2 in one turn, mentor needed

First question can I get a mentor? I have 117 DE games and not a single win. My win rate has dropped to below 2%.

My most powerful DEWZ character just died on one turn. I made a huge mistake by not recognizing that going down stairs is dangerous even for one turn. I won't make that mistake again. What I don't understand is when I posted this irc I was accused of lying. Maybe I don't understand the game dynamics but I went down the stairs and died without touching a key, to me that is death in one turn. Does engulf cause slowness? Does it take 2 turns to go down the stairs?

Re: Full health to -2 in one turn, mentor needed

You died in one "player action" but not in one in-game "turn", which is also known as "1.0 turn" or "10 auts". (EDIT: removed some inaccurate stuff about time spent taking stairs, TIL)

The crawl game uses "turn" in both senses (one player action & in-game time period), so you aren't technically incorrect to say you died in "one turn", but generally a crawl player will take that to mean "10 auts".

As to advice: Without watching your game's final moments, I'm guessing you know there were lots of monsters around that staircase before you went down. If that's the case, you should have found an alternate downstairs, on the basis that deliberately placing yourself next to more than one dangerous monster is almost always worse than another approach.

Re: Full health to -2 in one turn, mentor needed

How many turns does it take to go down stairs? Is it also 5 turns? If so I understand completely why I died. I can't believe I didn't notice before it takes 5 turns to go up stairs. I have learned a tremendous amount about crawl by playing DE, honestly I am getting slightly better but it's a hard road.

And yes I should have found different stairs, even if I had lived I would had to blink away and probably would have died soon after.

Wait what? I thought it was like 2 turns or less.

Edit: the counter says it's 2.3 or 2.4.

sage1234 wrote:My most powerful DEWZ character just died on one turn.
This is a very misleading description of what happened. You went down a staircase, took about 6 actions on the other side of that staircase, making a ton of noise and attracting monsters, then went back up the staircase. Then you went down the staircase again a little later, and died immediately.

So obviously the main problem was that you went back down the stairs, but here are some hints for making your next DEWz a better character.

  Code:
Vehumet [******]
On the off-chance you haven't noticed, this is a bad god. If you just want to cast level 9 spells, fine, but kiku would be enormously better for winning.
  Code:
 + Level 13.5 Stealth
Don't train this.
  Code:
 * Level 15.1 Fire Magic
 - Level 1.0 Ice Magic
 - Level 7.6 Earth Magic
Pick one elemental school. Training two or more elemental schools is like training two or more melee weapon skills, it's a total waste.
  Code:
... on level 4 of the Shoals on July 13, 2016.
[...]
If you're not willing to play patiently (which appears to be the case), don't visit this level until you've already at least done vaults:1-4.

It is, chequers just made that up. The time it takes to go up stairs isn't even relevant for this death. Typically it takes 23 or 24 aut to use stairs, but only 10 of those are actually spent on the current side of the stairs, the other 13 or 14 are on the level you entered. (And if the level you entered hasn't been visited already, then you don't really spend any time on it in a meaningful way, as monsters won't get actions).

Thank you for the advice. I think I need to read more online, I had thought Vehumet was the best and easiest god for a caster. Vaults 4 is safer than Shoals:4? Then is Snake:4 safer than Shoals:4? I believed that everything but slimes was equal in difficulty of the S levels.

If I chose Kiku should I play as a necromancer? Not sure how Kiku helps me unless I play non-elemental caster. If I play as a necromancer will that kill stuff later in the game? Poison seems like it doesn't work in the later parts of the game either.

Yes you are correct that I am not that patient but I am getting more and more patient. The transition from a melee character to a caster is more difficult than I have ever imagined.

S:4 is dangerous because it contains the rune, which is typically surrounded by lots of enemies (most of them high tier) so the enemy density is significantly higher/more deadly

Shoals:4 is much more dangerous than the other S branch endings.

Got another character up, waiting for a book of earth spells. God is Vehumet because I found an early alter. I will change up my god choices.

Re: Full health to -2 in one turn, mentor needed

Keep posting character dumps. I'm sure more useful advice will come forth!

If you are keen on winning a 'caster', might I suggest not picking DE? DrXX, HOFE, GrEE, MfIE would all be easier choices. They come with better inbuilt defences.

Although Wz is certainly a decent playable background, I wouldn't recommend it for newer players. The starting book gives the option of training too many different spell schools, neglecting defences or utility. FE and IE are much more straight-forward.

Don't get me wrong, DEWz of Vehumet is certainly winnable, but it's less mistake-tolerant than the combos listed above.

BTW can you explain why Vehumet is bad? I gives good offensive spells to work with, which is what Wz needs, since it's book lacks any real firepower. Mana on kills is nice, and improved range is a bit broken imo, when you can hit anything in los with poison arrow/bolt of fire. I guess Kiku can give bolt of draining/animate dead, but I always thought he has more synergy with hybrid/melee builds. What if I want to play pure blaster-caster? Vehumet just seems the best.

Re: Full health to -2 in one turn, mentor needed

Wz already has the best damage spell in the game that's over level 1 (conjure flame). If you want to use spells to kill things then Kiku and even Sif are both just plain better for that, since they give better spell gifts and also have useful active abilities (Vehumet's passives do very little).

Vehumet does not give good offensive spells. You get a bunch of low-level conjurations that are already obsolete by the time they're offered, then in lair (already too late to matter honestly) you finally get the possibility of a couple useful level 6 conjurations, then...nothing. Sif starts giving useful gifts a little earlier, and if you're interested in late game power, she doesn't stop. Kiku gives you animate skeleton/vampiric draining/animate dead/agony/excruciating wounds/simulacrum before either Sif or Veh get out of bed, and you have deliver corpses, so there's an 84.4% chance that you can already kill anything in the game at that point with zombie spam, and if you are unlucky and don't get any of animate skeleton/dead/simulacrum you still have either agony or excruciating wounds which will take care of any (perceived) damage problems for the rest of the game.

What do you mean by "too late to matter"? You get poison arrow/bolt of fire/iron shot/OOD by early-mid lair, which is enough to win the game. How is that not useful? Don't get me wrong, Kiku is great, but like I said, he favors hybrid builds, since Necromancy by design is a support magic school. Excruciating wounds implies that you use melee and summon spam I just hate. As for Sif, mana channeling was the most obnoxious thing ever, and I haven't yet checked the reworked version.

I think duvessa's argument is predicated on the fact that once you reach lair, you can comfortably win the game with any of those three gods, so you should compare their power levels in the part of the game that's before. Veh gives little benefit early (you get a bunch of low level spell gifts that aren't better than your starting book), whereas Kiku's first and second book gifts are full of instantly-useful spells that complement your existing book.

I completely agree that Kiku gives a much earlier power spike, however saying that Vehumet is a bad god is not true at all. And besides, reaching lair as Wz is not a big deal, since conjure flame/mephitic cloud handle all early threats.

Vehumet is worse than most of the other gods (not worse than chei, xom, qazlal, zin, tso). That is enough for me to say that Vehumet is bad.

Kiku is better at all stages of the game than Vehumet, you underestimate deliver corpses, pain brand, and likely the necromancy skill altogether. Vehumet does pull ahead in ziggurats, but that's about it, and I doubt sage1234 is looking to complete a ziggurat at the moment.

Well, intentionally building a "pure" blaster means you are making a weaker character than you need to be. If you want to add that additional stipulation on top of the challenge Crawl already presents, by all means do so, but since OP is asking for advice, let's be clear about what's going on.

Obviously Kiku isn't helpful if you don't memorize or use any necromancy spells. That has nothing to do with "hybrid/melee" characters; you are making your "blaster" character weaker if you do not take advantage of all the good stuff available to you. It's totally fine if you don't like necromancy and summoning spells, but I want to ensure that you do realize that avoiding (e.g.) Shadow Creatures in favor of another redundant conjuration spell will make your character weaker, less versatile.

A well-built "blaster" that mostly kills with direct damage spells should still train plenty of defensive skills, should still have some melee capability, and should have spells other than just conjurations.

(Also, to OP: Taking Vehumet on D1 or D2 with a **Wz, assuming no better god choices are yet available, is not a bad play, even if Vehumet is not such a strong god.)

If you're looking for good gods on a caster (well, on anyone really) there's always Fedhas. Shrooms handle early dudes and you can set up oklob killing fields on branch ends.

A+ would worship again

You really can't go wrong with kiku, though.

Re: Full health to -2 in one turn, mentor needed

Your tactical decisions were a shit show. There's no way you should have gone down to shoals 4, looked at that screen, and thought "Yep, I can take this, no problem, I can just stair dance it with 13/16 and robes." You're basically always better off just doing Vaults:1-4 instead of Shoals.

Anyway, your skilling was fine if you want to play a conjuration-only character except for stealth which you don't need to train. I watched one of your other tvs by accident when looking for this one, you're just not keeping distance from enemies properly and are picking fights poorly . You need to get better at estimating how much MP it will take to win a given fight, and make sure that if you are fighting near unexplored terrain, to leave 5-10 MP so that you can deal with whatever is attracted by spell noise. You should also walk more enemies back toward explored terrain to limit the effects of spell noise.

As a conjurer you mostly want to have a line of retreat from your current position to the stairs, so that you can run away to restore MP when something catches you with zero MP due to spell noise. This applies to melee too, but the difference is that melee is good and conj is not so that it actually matters if you do this.

Edit: To add to this, there are basically 3 ways that things can go to shit as a mage.

1. You have no good options when you descend to a new floor.
2. You finish clearing a group of enemies, and an enemy faster than you that is dangerous comes into view and sees you.
3. A group of ranged enemies all attack you at once.

You need to think about the possibility of these things happening at all times when you're using conjurations and how you're going to deal with them, and the easiest thing to do is just manage your MP better.

Try DECj instead of DEWz. The Cj starting book is strong and sets you up nicely to pick an elemental school given book drops or Vehemut gifts.
