YAVP : TrFE^Ru, I thought Ru was bad...

I don't know why but I didn't like Ru. At all. Sacrificing some power maybe... For my first Ru game, I played OpRu and tried to minimize the sacrifices, never used Apocalypse... That was awful...
  Code:
Invok: Sacrifice a Hand  |       |       |     1 |       |       |       |       |       |       ||     1
       Sacrifice Essence |       |       |     1 |     1 |     1 |       |       |       |       ||     3
       Power Leap        |       |       |       |     1 |    28 |     4 |     7 |     3 |     3 ||    46
       Reject Sacrifices |       |       |       |     1 |     4 |       |       |       |       ||     5
       Sacrifice Purity  |       |       |       |       |     1 |       |       |       |       ||     1
       Sacrifice Health  |       |       |       |       |       |     1 |       |       |       ||     1
       Sacrifice Courage |       |       |       |       |       |     1 |       |       |       ||     1

But I didn't know what the reward was ! With only two sacrifices (resists + artifice), I reached max piety, and it felt really good :D
  Code:
Invok: Sacrifice Artific |       |       |     1 |       |       |       |       |       |       ||     1
       Sacrifice Resista |       |       |       |     1 |       |       |       |       |       ||     1
       Power Leap        |       |       |       |     2 |     3 |     5 |     7 |     9 |     6 ||    32
       Apocalypse        |       |       |       |       |     2 |     5 |    13 |     3 |    10 ||    33
       Draw Out Power    |       |       |       |       |       |       |       |     1 |       ||     1
A really strong char overall. I really could have got more runes, but started to feel bored, and that's how I usually screw chars...

Re: YAVP : TrFE^Ru, I thought Ru was bad...

Nice! I found Ru to be quite strong. An early altar can make a huge difference.

I've seen a few cases of players taking lots of small sacrifices, but that doesn't seem like a good idea. Get the piety up early to get help when it's most needed: early!

It's not a good idea to take a bunch of little sacrifices. In you basically have a laundry list of 'mutations' that suck. Like the one where even friendly allies attack you. Go big, Ru will take care of the rest.

Sac love (the one where allies attack you) is actually a medium to larger sacrifice iirc. But i do agree with the sentiment, i also prefer having a few specific larger sacrifices to keep in mind and work around, than a litany of smaller weaknesses that impact every situation somewhat.

I probably took it too late :oops:

I believe now (or maybe it was true i previous crawl versions) the game tells you your piety score for each sac....thats handy.

Re: YAVP : TrFE^Ru, I thought Ru was bad...

I've only played one game with Ru, so there's a good chance I don't know what I'm talking about (though I did win, for whatever that's worth), but I wouldn't personally sac artifice again if I was playing to win. Evocables are just too good. Ru's powers are strong but they're not as strong as all the things you can do with evocations in a typical game.

Also, Ru does not play well with transparent walls. You can wait and watch monsters attack each other (at least in 0.17.1). This leads to pretty degenerate play if you're willing to exploit it.

Re: YAVP : TrFE^Ru, I thought Ru was bad...

I would agree that artifice is the biggest sacrifice. It's definitely fine for a 3-rune game. For longer games the player then needs to find alternatives. Heal wounds is kinda covered by draw out power. Haste can be trained as spell. Elemental evokers are strong, but apocalypse and leap kinda make up for that. The only thing I'd really worry about is running out of tele. Getting cblink castable is usually prohibitive.

You also have all the random evocable abilities on rings and assorted artifacts. For example, in my game I found cloak of the thief. I feel like Ru's powers almost but not quite make up for the loss of evocations, but then you have to make another sacrifice to get all Ru's powers anyway. The game is still very winnable but it seems to me like a bad trade overall.
