Classification of characters

After winning 2 full melee guys, I tried to have some diversity in my characters(melee, ranged, caster). My goal is to achieve every one of them, tho I dunno how long it would take.

I'm not sure I agree that Earth is boring. LRD is a very interesting spell with a lot of flexibility. Close escapes using Passwall are also quite exciting. To top it off, it's not too hard to get started, since the starting spell is extremely powerful for level 1, now that the dungeon has a copious supply of stones. I haven't gotten to use Shatter much, but when I have tried it, it seems to wreck everything in sight (monsters, doors, walls, what-have-you.)

This method of classification sounds essentially like the list of existing backgrounds, with the exception of the way you've split up ranged. I don't think there's really a huge difference in the way the game plays between slings, xbows, and bows, fwiw; I guess xbow has some early ammo problems, but that's about it.

You'd also more heavily favor Str for crossbow builds. But as you say, not a huge difference.

I'd argue there isn't a major difference between bow/xbow (one is 30% faster and does ~30% less damage, but it basically the same), but that slings are notably different. For one the lower damage is getting to the point where it actually matters (ie, tough to take down armored monsters), and it supports a shield playstyle, which OP listed as a different build for his 1h/shield vs 2h melee characters, so presumably he'd want to play a 1h hunter/2h hunter as well.

The usual sling hunter is a HaHu^Okawaru. You get tons of ammo early on (on the floor) but it can be tough to have enough sling bullets to last all game long without ammo gifts.

Yeah, I have tried a Hahu slinger/tomahawk specialist, but got demolished in elf:3. I blame bad roll of crystal spear.

Hm.... My classification uhm.. tried to get as much as different playing styles/spells. Did not put warper, am and some sort because they eventually become skald-like or plain melee/ranged dudes. And yeah, crossbow and bows are pretty much similar, but hey, why not? Really want to get a xbowggan going. And that is different, i guess?

So...... I have tried out tons of characters, and it seems like I am incredibly lucky, yet I play so under-sub-sub-sub-sub-sub-optimally that everything goes down. On 3 of my games, I found a pot of exp before lair. One died to harold netting me while ma kobold fighting a hydra, one to maud because killing her seemed like a good idea and one to me recklessly charging into 20 white imps at the entrance of ice cave because i was so bored to death. Oh well.
My last game had lajatang of order, but.... Note to self: a vault with 2 basiliks, 1 captltopas(spelling so hard) and 3 hydras are not good for chei characters. Or any characters. Instapetrification->why so many heads biting me->nooooooo my laja of order->despair

Surprisingly, my best character was DeSu^Sif. Summoning IS solid. i died stupidly, like all my deaths. why did I go to a corner, i don't know.
My next character: HeHu (because i hate centaurs. good to win, but pretty shitty to play)

I've actually wanted to do pure crossbows for a long time, but there is actually a pretty big lack of "strong pure crossbow" races in crawl, as well as an extremely low amount of bolts available in the early game. You'll eventually find plenty, but not in the early game.

Your best bet is to do something like this: http://dobrazupa.org/morgue/tasonir/mor ... 084701.txt KoBe, use melee early on. Fired my first bolt in the level 10-12 bucket, didn't actually 'switch' until the level 16-18 bucket (about half melee half ranged). By level 19 I was about 90% ranged, and rarely melee'd anything. I don't really like kobolds in general, but it's hard to find a race with +crossbow skill, and while centaurs are probably ideal, I hate the idea of going crossbows on a centaur because they clearly prefer regular bows, so it just feels like you're intentionally gimping yourself, not to mention that arrows are actually available from the early dungeon. Crossbow spriggan is an interesting idea, I assume they'd be limited to arbalests? Don't think that would be much of a problem, as an arbalest is quite strong.

I now really get the hang of summoner now! It is actually pretty strong. Really strong. Just chilling out in the back channeling while my spire shoots bolts is satisfying.
So... I HATE spell hunger and tried out musu, but as you know, mu is .................
Anyway, I like innate gourmand, so kobold it is (cat is.................) I was wondering why kosu is unpopular. Works great to me. In lair now with p solid defence 20ac,ev. Killing 3 skelly warriors when I was level 10 was awesome. Spires!!!!!!

Picked up meph, book of battles just found. Shroud&regen! Freezing cloud is tempting me. Should I forget that and wait for sif do give me some summoning?

If KoSu is working for you, great, go for it :) As for why it's unpopular, hunger costs are generally not as big a deal as some players think. Kobolds have -20% hp, which is a good way to suddenly find yourself in an emergency when you take a bad hit or two. I suppose if you're repeatedly channelling you'll have some hunger issues, but a few levels of spellcasting will remove casting hunger, and really there's plenty of chunks around.

In spider. My best caster perished here, so lets see how far this kobold gets. Summon hydras is great, works on everything. monstrous meanegerie is also great. hm. Maybe i should forget meph for shroud&regen.
Got down to 5 hp once, underestimated redbacks and boulder beetles. why does redback's poison get me down to like 30 when i have rpois? It has the strongest poison among spiders. weird.
have max mr... what... Guess i will do elf next, elf is always fun. And, i was shocked to discover staffs are 2-h for kobolds... bye bye staffs.
I'm really anxious now, and don't know what to train/memorize/how to kill stuff. Will summon hydras&monstrous meanagerie be okay for now? Should i get mana vipers? Or abjuration?(in my sif library)

Mana vipers are great in Elf. You have 8 free spell levels so you can get both vipers and Abjuration. Summon Imp can probably go.

I would do D to 15 first, then Shoals (at least before Elf:3). (Personally, I save Elf for after V:4 and Depths, at that point Elf is pretty trivial.)

I don't play summoners much, so I may be off, but from general advice I hear monstrous menagerie is generally strong enough to clear the endgame (3 rune, maybe extended?). It can certainly be your core endgame summon, if you don't find/don't want to spend the mana for dragon's call. It was recently bumped up to 7 to reflect its power, it had been 6. Once you have enough summoning though, it'll still be worth it :)

Monstrous Menagerie is can be used to clear depths and zot, but it isn't as clean as it is in vaults and s-branches. Malign Gateway is noticeably more effective against significant threats, and gets you phase shift castable as well. Getting enough summoning to cast XXX by way of brilliance potions is nice in general situations.

Using MM as the springboard to get these two other spells online is my rough plan when starting summoners for 3 rune, but it is just a rough plan. Use what the dungeon gives you.

I think Malign Gateway is immune to abjuration as well, but I am not sure about this.

Dragon's Call is good in specific situations (sif channelling, lots of MP+9 items.), but frequently isn't worth the XP to get there in a 3rune (most lvl 9s are like this).

You should turn off summoning till you have a new summon to learn. Just put xp into short blades/fighting/armor/dodge/stealth. You really should have some stealth and short blades, not for stabbing particularly, but because stealth is good and whacking things with your weapon is frequently all you want to do during some of your turns as a summoner. However, since you have a shortblade, you'll get some bonus distraction stabs occasionally.

:o I had no idea. I can't say I was a fan of the Str weighting mechanic but at least it provided some guidance as to which stats to focus for which weapons. Choosing is hard.

It is, it also isn't abjured on summoner's death, so if something kills you while it's up you can pretend your killer died to the tentacle afterwards.

Ok, I got mm and was feeling pretty confident with those hydra heads and harpies and cleared spider. Butttttttttttt why you aquamancer hit me with water while I miscast pog twice. WHY

Stealthy crossbow

I can't even believe this character made this far. This is uhm... dith+crossbow+stabbbb. they dont really match together, but why not.
Went with koas, lair was keep pressing tab until that yak finally dies. I understood the weakness of daggers. Orc, the same thing. Feeling very underpowered until i found artefact robe with invis on it. Had shoals, and did it first.(i also had mr++++) REALLY hard, invising every time. Well, invis is good. Second thing i learned. After ramping up defence in shoals, snake was pretty doable, tabbing until my rapier of elec works(acquired it and was disappointed. wished for some good crossbow) Didn't realise there was a runed arbalest sitting in a shop until then. Bought it, and game became easier. Shadow bolts gonna shoot'em all.

Notable moment:I shadow stepped into vashnia, crossing my fingers that their band wouldn't notice and BOOM, SAINT ROKA and LOUISE. WHY. I apparently interrupted their tea party. got down to 30 hp at once, with sharpshooters shooting at me and saint roka hitting me and louise hitting me with halberd. blinked, ran, was figuring the best way to kill them until i realized NO SINV. Louise stab, Saint roka stab, Vashnia net stab. easy.

E:No cloak because i just identified -7 cloak {rpois rf- rcorr}. Amazing

So, crossbow is fine weapon when you are not surrounded. One-shotting is fun. Had +7 arbalest of flaming sitting and decided to rebrand, got venom.
I tried to shadow step into oof but forgot this was zot:5 chamber. I had 3 oofs chasing me.

Dith+ranged is actually a great combo because shadow mimicry is stupidly strong with ranged. Dith+throwing+stab is a better combo though because hex needles are awsome and throwing does the best damage of any ranged weapon (in exchange for limited ammo which you save by stabbing and requiring high skill.)

Okay, so this is VSSu of... Chei.
Hm...
I was really wondering if chei was the right choice, but turns out it is. Became hybrid real quick, and when mara dropped a +5demon whip of elec, my way was set.
and honestly, everyone should try summoner^chei. Hilarious to see my summons kill everything when i move one time.
Melee'd through most of depths and vaults. summons are my fighting buddies.
Got tons of jewellery at bazaar, and i think this char is ready for 15 rune, if only dragon's call will be below 10%. Hm... should i grab a heavier armour?

PS: I once again realized how strong vs is. like, really.
