I dunno. I like having a ranged attack to soften monsters up as they approach; why spend a turn not damaging a monster when you could be damaging it? I would probably not look to ranged as a primary damage output, but it's cheap to get 8-ish levels.

But yeah, I would not invest a bunch in ranged now.

Sucks, man. I die this way too often.

Wiglaf definitely warrants at least haste and probably !might. You had 10. Stick to the "I've lost the fight at 50% health" rule and you will be happier -- it (usually) lets you try out a fight and come back buffed. Or with an oklob laying down covering fire. Having an oklob or two in a branch end isn't a bad plan in general; you can walk dangerous dudes over to its area.

Also, you had "Regen and were wearing "Gourmand. Stacking regeneration is great; you had plenty of food for spider.

Naga combos... NaIE? NaNe? NaEn^Kiku? Stab things and use a pain dagger? I killed a naga in basically the same way. I'd acquired the Lightning Scales. Still ghhhhhhhrrrr about that one.

I'm still a huge fan of TrEE^Chei. It's fun to have high-powered conjurations on a troll, and cheistats mean you can get non-awful EV.

NaTm is good in itself, also you can run away if you are in spider/ice form, IIRC.

I've always had a hard time with Tm starts. They seem like they should be good, but it's pretty XP hungry -- you want unarmed, and tmut, and poison, and ice, and oh yeah you probably want some dodging and stealth soon-ish...

Anyway, NaTm??? Apparently I have played 15 NaTm, and once made it to level 5. Not very promising - Tm is my worst background - 350 games played, best level 18. Ha ha, I suck. Back when I was a noob, I killed 129 SETm, and never got better than level 11. Naga OTOH, 54 played, best level 12.

So at least I have room to improve... NaTm does not sound very diesel though... I go Okie/Mak/Fedhas?

Fedhas is the best option, but as usual it depends on when you find altars. I wouldn't slither away from D:2 Oka even if Oka isn't quite as good as Fedhas. Also, I'd consider Yred and maybe Kiku.

I think there's an "official" definition which is based off your defenses: https://lookupdb.guy.ht/#term/diesel (TLDR: have 46+ ac, 31+ ev)

It basically just means having a powerful character, though. Note this definition has nothing to do with "good for early game" or "streaking" etc etc.

NaTm would be pretty easy to turn diesel - AC is very high on nagas, and then you'd just need to look for something to boost your EV. Chei, phase shift, a good ring of evasion, etc.

Ok, 3 dead NaTm, two of Fedhas, one of Okie, top level 5. Damn I hate Nagas. I am sure in the hands of Chei and a non-awful player, Nagas can become diesel, but not for me today. Back to CeGl of Fed.

Did your Fedhasites survive long enough to get the first ability? Herding mushrooms might not be the most fun thing due to their movement rules, but it really helps. Basically I would just make a mushroom as soon as I have * piety and try keep 2-3 with me until Lair - first 2, later more, in Lair I make much more, 7-8. Don't really care about conserving piety, just make shrooms. Get some Invo around XL8 or so.

Ok, my Fedhas followers will try to make more shrooms. As for the Nagas, I really feel like giving up on Nagas. Everything I learnt about positioning and luring seems wrong with them - meet an orc, try to get out of LOS, ha ha, meet his friends, die. See an orc priest, and what? Spit, miss and die.

Nagas are really tough in the earlygame, one of the worst races. If you want to win one, I'd recommend IE. Kinda obvious, I know. CJ is great as well.

Yeah, I guess I will try those at some point. The whole point of this thread was to address the most glaring 'easy' species in my list of winners. So DD is down, and I have at least improved my best Ce record a tiny bit.

Races I am yet to win, which are still available to play on Trunk: Ce, DG, Fe, Fo, Gh, Ha, Ko, Mu, Na, Og and Tr. Of those, Ce, Dg, and Ha are meant to be pretty damned simple; Fe, Mu and Na are meant to be pretty hard; and I don't know where the others fall, especially the Og and Tr... feels like they should wreck everything, but instead get wrecked.

Felids are more of an endurance test: how long can you stand running away? I don't think they are bad/weak. Og can be tricky in the early game. I'd recommend OgBe, not just because it's strong, but also because Trog will shower you in ridiculous randart GSCs. Trolls... use a shield if you hadn't.

Ok, my ogre just found a GDA lying an the floor in Lair. Do I switch immediately, then pump armour, or pump armour, and switch soon? Right now, my AC/EV goes from 8/19 in my awesome robe of resistance, to 16/9, and of course, I have the resistances covered right now... Hmm. My artifact morningstar also came off the floor. Come on Trog, don't let the floor god put you to shame.

I wouldn't train so much Dodging on an ogre at this point in the game. I would train more Fighting, much, much more Fighting. An XL14 Og should have something like over 200 HP. I would also be using a GC/GSC and enchanting it.

I would also postpone training Evo, personally.

A good reason not to train a bunch of dodging early on an ogre is maybe you find GDA in Lair and find that armour is a better bet.

I'd wear the GDA and train fighting and armour, and yeah, grab some GSC from the ground and hit things with that.

I might be tempted to use the robe until you train armor to like level 4 or 5, but not terribly long. The GDA is ultimately much better, and especially if you get a few enchant armor scrolls on it. Use that all game long and don't look back :) Turn off dodging, 13 is high enough for a long time (it will still benefit you some, but much less in GDA). You can of course train more dodging once you have GSC's on min delay and armor/fighting are around 20.

As far as other remaining races go, I wouldn't say that Dg are terribly simple. They're simple in the sense that they have less choices, but that doesn't make them easy. Og or Tr are both simple and easier, although they have a notable dip of power in the midgame without dragon armor/gloves/boots yet. Dragon armor helps bring them back up a bit, although they will always be missing gloves/boots (statue form is good for this reason, and especially so on trolls who use unarmed).

My lack of Og experience is definitely showing through - I was hoping actual defenses other than HP would be possible. So, for the future: More fighting, then fighting, then some fighting. OK.

(I trained some Evo due to my invis ring, I love me some invis rings. Also, I spent all the Lair 8 XP on armour, and made the switch at level 5, was already better than the robe)

Thanks for all the 'enchant your armour and GSC' advice - so far I have found just one enchant weapon scroll since I identified them, which I duly spent on my antimagic GSC, and a grand total of zero enchant armour scrolls - still not identified them at all, which I think at level 18 with one rune is a new personal record.

I really want Undeadhunter to be better than my randart holy GSS, but I suspect its not, which is a shame. So many nice wepaons, such terrible defenses.

Undeadhunter supposedly does something silly like +250% average damage vs. undead (holy is +75%), so it's likely better. Use it in Tomb and Crypt!

Crap. Getting into those terrible 'Definitely a promising character' areas of the game where I really don't want to screw up. The first caustic shrike pack felt dangerous, but then Trog whispered in my ear, and the next one was like, pfft, summon some bros, yay. Still, had a bit of a typo-misstep during a boggart zerg rush entering Depths 4, was almost down to single digit HP :(. Must be more careful.

Not dead yet though... I even have some javelins of penetration to potentially make stair dancing Vaults 5 less of a death trap. Still not exactly been overwhelmed with enchant anything scrolls - my +3 antimagic GSP has climbed to +7, and my GDA to +4, so that's four of each. Including two bazaars. Still got Elf to come though before V5, maybe I can eek out a few more points of AC there.

Yeah trog gifts large rocks - I'm not sure it's possible to run out of large rocks on a OgBe :) +4 GDA is much much better than +0, and hopefully you'll get a few more to keep moving upwards. There's usually one or two in v:5, or in elf:3. Especially if you plan on using javelins of penetration to make stair dancing V:5 safe, I'd train throwing a bit higher. 15 is great, but 20 is even better, and as a berserker you are already running out of things to train, so go for it :)

Nothing better than that +5 str ring?

Good points - I am hurling rocks quite a bit, and damn they are good, so lets make them better. And yeah, I love nets. Nets are like, basically my favourite thing when confronted with ALichs, Mara, and also on other occasions... Always disconcerting how effective they are.

As for the ring... there is a Dex+3 ring upstairs which might actually be a tiny bit better, or at least, not much worse. Looking at where I have been already, not really been massively lucky with rings this time round, and Trog has bombarded me with what would be so many Sky weapons were it not for the fact they are also massively effective at killing things, that I don't feel the need to even carry junk like the only artifact ring generated so far: {Fire rElec rN+ Str-4 Stlth-}. Maybe I can pack it for Zot. In fact, my rings so far have been so meh that the choice between wearing my ring of magic protection and a vanilla +2 cloak instead of a +0 cloak of magic protection and a different ring felt like a no brainer... Presumably I can swap back if I find a +3 or better ring of protection (actually I would just swap the strength ring :) )

Edit: 3 randard cloaks in a Wizlab, and I guess at least the rCorr one is not definitely unambiguously worse than the vanilla +2 one I so would love to upgrade... I was all like, oh, these cloaks are going to be awesome. But I really just wanted more AC. *sigh*. Just have to hope Tiamant appears for my second Zot in a row - not likely.

So I have cleared Elf, Crypt and V5, and am still struggling to upgrade my rings. A search for jewellery yields the following:

I will buy and switch to the rMut amulet for Zot probably.

None of those artifact rings look better than +5 strength or vanilla MR. I don't know, maybe I will swap the MR ring for 'W' {SustAt rElec rF+ Str-5 Int+3} in Zot against OOF and EGolemns, whilst wielding my antimagic GSC. That would be equivalent to wearing an {SustAt rF+} ring and an {rElec+ ring}. Actually, it would be better to wear a 'u' a vanilla rF+ ring, the strength ring, and wield my rElec GSC for golems if need be.

So my zot rings will be a combination of vanilla MR, vanilla +5 str, vanilla rF+, and vanilla +Inv (for those pesky draconians). This strikes me as pretty mediocre, am I missing some awesome combo in the pic above?

Yes, an ogre victory! Definitely a very different experience, the whole glass cannon thing. Zot was pretty easy I guess - I didn't really do a very careful job, and never felt particularly threatened. I also killed an OOF with rocks at range, instead of rushing in with my antimagic club, just because I could. And of course, I went from 24 to 27 levels of maces skill before getting fighting to level 27, due to being a lame-ass title obsessed noob. I just couldn't help myself. All those slayers and conquerors get me down.

Ok, hi guys, back from a wee holiday, still trying to tick the 'easy' species off my unwon list: Ce, DG, Fe, Fo, Gh, Ha, Ko, Mu, Na and Tr. So before I get back to killing Ce of Fedhas, lets have an almost promising DGCj:

1. Found two manuals of Ice magic in a cave, and then found Book of Frost on the floor a bit later.

As to spells vs. melee - both can work, do whatever looks more fun to you.

there's definitely a compromise position there - use ozo armour and melee things in a robe, with ice beast / fprism support. When you eventually find bolt of cold or refrigeration you can unleash death that way too.

Ha, thanks guys. I do wear the AC ring most of the time, honest, I just had to tab a pesky unseen horror a few monsters ago, and I hate not having MR+++ in Vaults.

I am not sure if I have ever cast fprism - is it significantly better than IMB for AOE damage? Ice beasts though, they sound like they would have been a great idea in Shoals and Spider, and still potentially useful even now. Good idea.

Edit:
So I found the awesome books of Enchantments and Battle, and I was like, yay, let's become a Skald. Then a little bit later, I found the Book of Power. So for the moment I shall be a spectral ozzo fighter, with ok conjurations support, with the view of eventually becoming a hasted spectral ozzo fighter, with fantastic conjurations support (I <3 OOD). Still feeling sad about my ice manuals though :roll:.

If I settle on OOD as my highest powered spell, should I start pumping Dex now for better EV?

CiP: I suck at diesel combos: screw Na, back to Ce

Dead. I really hate the entrance to Depths sometimes - its a pretty big leap up in danger, and the entrance vault on D15 often isn't a good shape for stair dancing.
But what I hate the most is starting a Crawl session with a promising character, entering Depths, then just forgetting how to play due to not having woken up properly.

This was easily my lamest > XL 20 death. I basically entered Depths, saw an entropy weaver, decided to draw it away from the stairs instead of just killing it right there and attracting more dudes to the stairs, then saw a fire giant, and just bloody ignored it, forgetting my easily correctable lack of rF+, continued to lure the weaver into unexplored, dangerous territory, eventually got corroded, finally realised I was maybe in trouble, walked, with no blink, with no haste, back to the stairs, adjacent to three monsters without considering the layout of D15 above, climbed the stairs, and then again decided not to blink away but instead try to blast my out past a fire giant with IMB, presumably hoping it would choose to kiss my instead of attack me, whilst I slowly chipped away at it. WTF.

Why the hell do I learn Haste, or carry blink scolls and rF rings, if I am just randomly going to sleepily decide not to use them? Why do I ever try to play before lunch time?
Sometimes it feels ridiculous that I have any Crawl wins at all - Crawl is too forgiving.

I killed some Ce and some Mu, realised I had no patience, and rolled a DsMo, wanting to punch stuff. Not had a successful puncher since my UNE Beastfighter, so it sounded like fun. Got Claws 1 as first mut - big result - then found a faded altar.

What could be more in the Ds spirit than a random god? So of course, I got XOM. At first I was like, crap, but so far XOM has been pretty chill, and seems to have spent more time helping me than trying to kill me, so thats cool. Don't suppose it will last long, but nevermind.

2. If I want some level 3 spells online in plate/FDA later, should I pump Int or Str? I haven't really got the hang of armoured casters at all yet.

Ok, killed off my Xom DsMo, killed off a few more Centaurs, Mummies and Nagas. Even killed off lots of KoBe. So now I have a HaAE. I had one of these get to XL 25, so I don't completely suck at them (thats actually my best AE ever), but I am struggling with this one - couple of issues I am not sure about:

1. What non-magical kill-dudes skill to choose? My current choices seem to be bows, slings, long blades and maces. Not having one of these trained is getting painful, short term I have whips of venom and freeze, loads more arrows than bullets, and just Erica's flaming scimitar, but its a Ha, so long blades or slings seem XP sensible.

2. Should I pick up Bolt of Fire now? I just picked up Fireball from Veh, in non-Air attack desperation - not found very many books at all so far, and was beginning to thing random Electric eels would just have to go unpunished, but I haven't even started training Fire for it yet. Pros for also picking up BoF: Its awesome damage once I get it online, its relatively quiet, I have the spell slots, I have a ring of Fire. Cons: I have no Fire skill right now, and for a long time, against rElec enemies, Fireball will work instead, once I do train Fire.
