I found 15 javelins by d:2, but decided that since throwing is listed as never being trained over 2, that I should take a more strict conduct of never throwing anything. I did make one exception for throwing nets, which are called out as being useful against sigmund and orc warriors. I ran into an early sigmund and threw all three nets at him - I missed three times. I then went on to tab him easily to death. Ah well, not a fault of the guide, that's RNG for you.
Picked up okawaru, Makhleb wasn't even in the pretemple/temple; found its altar later in a sewer vault and then d:7 or 8. Accidentally trained invocations to 4.2, higher than the recommended 3, but I'll just ignore the difference. Trained staves/armor/dodging simultaneously, 33% each. Found a +1 quarterstaff of protection which was pretty nice, and a staff....of power. Oh well. Okawaru's first weapon gift was a randart lajatang - +9 Flaming, relec...and -5 int. Couldn't wield it without going brainless. I'm not sure I can flaw the guide for not mentioning putting a point into to int to wear randarts with -5 int, as that's rather specific advice. Not sure if I should stick to the conduct I had planned, which was all stat ups must be dex. I'll probably get another lajatang gift soon either way, but I think I probably will put a point into int.
Crisis averted! Found the staff of earth on D:10. So long the +9 lajatang of Huocs {flame, rElec MR- Int-5 Dex+2}! It's earth town time, baby! Skills (staves/armor/fighting) are all at 12, I'll keep training them to 14. Still need to find an earth spell to train earth.
Found a nice +6 scale mail with rF, dex+4, sInv, but also *confuse. Wore it for a little while but then was gifted a +1 plate with rPois slay+2. Perhaps not quite as strong, but without the chance to be confused, so I switched to the plate. Lair is on d:11, as is frannar, who drops me a freezing quartstaff, already my third branded quarterstaff.
Cleared down to lair:3, then jumped into orc because I really wanted to find any earth spell so I could switch into staff of earth as intended...And...no book shops in orc. Gah. there is a rF int+2 ring, which would mean I could wear the lajatang...Let's go ahead and do that, even though it's going to delay me buying some of the other good things: a +0 CPA is there, will probably use that if I can find enough enchant armor scrolls.
Of course, I find a earth spell on Lair:4. Iron shot, memorized! At this point I have 8.2 evo, and had started training fighting, at 3.3. Will turn on fighting, evo, and earth at 33% each. Evo hits 10, turn off evo and fighting, focus earth until 10, wield staff of earth. Acquire armor, got +2 gloves of archery. Staff of earth isn't doing as much damage yet. Still, the damage is good enough, and if didn't have something as insane as a +9 lajatang of flaming, it's probably be good. Still tabbing through things. Found a decent ring with -tele, but I'll wear it for a while anyways: wiz, -tele, rC, rElec, str+3. Second acquirement is heal wounds.
Stopped at the end of dungeon, lair and orc cleared (didn't check all of the stairs in orc, though). Will probably try to upgrade to CPA at some point - there's a +0 one for sale, as well as runed, non-ID'ed one for 2k. Will probably try the runed one. I don't think I'll include as much detail in future posts, but I think it's pretty hilarious how easily everything fell into place this game. Staff master minotaurs forever!
