So I FINALLY got myself DrTm that didnt die before XL 10, and managed to get a nice arsenal of spells.
I'd like to know what spells should I memorize and what skills to train next before going through shoals and spider den, and before progressing to vaults.

First of all: I'd stop training spellcasting. It's better to put your XP elsewhere, personally I'd prefer UC.

You can learn some nice low level spells like animate skeleton, rMsl, blink. Necromancy is a strong school, you already have regen spell, consider learning animate dead as well. Control undead can be useful later. Allies will support you in tough fights.

In the long run - especially if you think about extended - statue form + stoneskin is interesting. But it takes a while to get it running, I'd think about it when you have wizardry (ring or staff) and haste available.

In my opinion there are better gods for a transmuter than Sif but that's something for future games. I had a short look and found the topic Transmuter Gods? but you'll probably find some more topics discussing this question.

Good luck!

Re: CiP DrTm looking for help

What? spellcasting at 17? With a tm probably I wouldn't have so high even after winning, it's certainly one of the reason you're struggling with DrTm.
With a Tm the most important skills you should invest exp (and have at highest level, in any moment of the game) are in the order: UC, fighting, Dodging.
You want to train transmutation and spellcasting (too a MUCH lower degree) and poison\ice only up the level necessary to cast the spell at reasonable rate: spider form early on is good at 30/35% failure rate, as miscast aren't severe! After than, you can lower it a bit. Higher form you want to a higher success rate (10%ish or lower) because the miscast are more severe.
Finally, you want to get spider form asap after hitting xl3 and use it up lair, and then train ice form and use it (it's much better than blade hands in lair!) . Later, if like this char you find hydra\dragon form you can raise transmutation to cast it. As you have DF online, you shouldn't aim for higher transmutation or other form - please don't consider necromut, and statue form is bad, and especially very very bad for a DrTm who has DF online.

Plus, sif muna is a terrible god for a tm: they're are experience hungry (uc requires lots of experience to be good!), so you wouldn't have lot of experience left, just the necessary to use buffing spell (haste, charms in general and translocation). You should really think a tm like a melee background - good god for tm are fedhas (the best actually), makhleb, oka, and so on.

At this point I'd warmly suggest to train only UC, fighting and dodging for a while (like getting them to 20ish \15ish \15ish at least).Stop training spellcasting, not raise anymore for all the game. If you get haste you could train only charms until it's online.
Of the spell avaiable I'd definitely learn blink, repel missiles and regen (actually you've already have), animate skeletons and undead. Stoneskin is good until you find ozo's armour, after use the latter.
screw it I hate this character I'm gonna go melee Gastronok

I leveled it up mostly because I went Sif Muna (apparently a mistake) and considered splitting into some other magic schools, Not going to do it anyways it seems.

poison\ice only up the level necessary to cast the spell at reasonable rate: spider form early on is good at 30/35% failure rate, as miscast aren't severe!

I thought leveling poison is wasted experience, since that "30/35 failure rate" can be achieved (maybe 1 floor later max.) by spending the experience on Spellcasting for slightly bigger Mana pool

Plus, sif muna is a terrible god for a tm

I read somewhere that it'd be a good bet for getting Dragon form, so I just went with it without thinking about it that much.

Thanks for the advice!

Tried it on this run? I know Ignite Poison got nerfed hard at the start of 0.17, but its been rebuffed a bit since then. The key change is that you need to poison the enemies, it doesnt work out of the box just because they have poison attacks. It actually does very respectable damage now, just is less spammable since you need to get poison into their systems.

That said... Switch UC back on, it never really hits a diminishing return. You dont have to focus it, but im not sure I would ever switch it off entirely. You probably also want to pick up a backup attack option, maybe iron shot or similar to give you options beyond forms/BHands. (you could probably run it on spellcasting and earth with a minimum of conjurations, it then also powers your petrify.)

I'd do spider before Shoals. The latter contains a lot of ranged enemies and you lack that capability for now, would involve a lot of trudging into melee range being pincushioned by javelins.

Dont outright discount the possibility of a shield either. With either BHands or Claws 3 I find UC plenty enough effective with 1 hand. It will slow you a little occasionally, but it has little overall impact while improving your defenses and being another slot to carry egos.

BH melds shields (and does so much damage you probably will use it vs. anything dangerous anyway, making training Shields kind of pointless).

Re: CiP DrTm looking for help

I am still a little confused after all this, when to use Bladed hands over Dragon form or Hydra form even? So far I only have found myself suffering whilst using it (Though that is probably because of the lack of dodge...)

A transmuter is an unarmed fighter with additional magic help, so Sif is not the best choice. However, I have become curious about statistics concerning transmuter gods and asked sequell about online games.

Of course, the following statistics don't include e.g. monks who often will go into the transmuter direction.

Transmuter games: !lg * class=Tm s=god

Without evaluating the results I'm surprised about the popularity of Chei and Sif!

does the [no god] mean mostly people that either die before getting a god and those that play Demigod (Imo they should be separated but who am I to talk, I can't code sh*t)

Yes, usually these should be either dead chars or demigods. I asked sequell about demigods - but you can check for yourself! Login at ##crawl and do your own search if you like.

For example, type !lg * class=Tm -log and sequell will show the morgue file of the most recent Tm game. !hs * DgTm will show the DgTm highscore. You can have a look at the commands here, examples are at the bottom of the page.

Re: CiP DrTm looking for help

Well Chei and tm have a sort of synergy as he gives a good help to get both spell online and good defences and add a ridiculous amount of damage to form.
Probably being godless is still better than going Chei but tm is arguably one of the best background if you really want to worship him

Eh, I don't know, it sounds really good in theory but Tm is kind of a hard and XP-hungry start and with Chei you usually want to train Invo also.

Re: CiP DrTm looking for help

I don't think training invocations to 9 is that exp intensive, and you get such huge gains on training dodging with the +15 dex that you can afford to be a bit less offensive for a while. Later on 14 invo still isn't that much to invest. It's certainly more than okawaru or Trog, sure.

Chei isn't a weak god - Chei simply forces a fairly complete style change. Some people will always hate chei for changing their play style, or removing some tactics. But constraining your choices leads to more interesting choices imho, which is why you also get a few people like me who happen to play Chei entirely too much.

Chei lines up perfectly with transmuting, so it doesn't surprise me at all that chei is the most popular and most won god for transmuters. This doesn't change that transmuters are a weak background of course, but if you do manage to make it to lair and have good piety, you're mostly set.

Your central decision on this character is if you want blade hands/dragon form or statue form. Blade hands is probably the best choice, dragon form is also viable since you're a draconian. Statue form is a bit more expensive, will help your defenses somewhat, but you do lose the scales while you're in statue form, so it isn't ideal. Even so, it's what I did on my DrTm. If you do get statue form, picking up iron shot will be fairly cheap, although the spell power won't be amazing, you could use it to soften up/pull mobs at range. Remember you're supposedly a melee character though, and don't go too heavily into spells. You may want to abandon sif at some point, once you have all the spells you want. Keep UC/fighting/dodging very high.

Don't you need something like 13-15 Invo for that big Chei panic button to have reasonable fail rate?

Re: CiP DrTm looking for help

Yes. I generally do chei invocations the same way on all chei characters: when you're at the point where you are gaining piety and can now afford the exp, train invocations to 9. This puts slouch at 1% fail, and step from time at roughly 20 or something I can't remember. Later on, when you have lots of other skills, train invo to 14 and have step from time at 1% fail. Step from time can easily save you with a 20% fail rate, and you should hopefully not need it. Getting invo to 9 is pretty cheap, so I don't consider chei to be an expensive-invocations god.

Chei makes normal players bad players because Chei is absurdly strong.

Re: CiP DrTm looking for help

I feel the biggest problem with Chei is surviving long enough to gain piety. Chei is good once you get enough piety for slouch/some resonable stat gain, but terrible at 0 peity. A chei Zelot might be surprisingly strong as you could start getting peity before the enemies get too strong.

You generally want very high UC on a transmuter, UC scales really well with levels. If your just trying for a 3 rune win don't worry about hunger costs too much, even if you run out of chunks there is pretty much always plenty of permafood for a 3 rune game.
