killed Boris 5 times. still curious what the record is...

Tried two zigs, couldn't complete either. Bailed on the first at Zig: 20 and the second at Zig: 19. both were tomb levels. these seem just about impossible to do safely after about zig:15 if worshipping TSO--the death curses+smites are a killer, even with a buffer wall of angels and silence (and silence becomes a bigger problem later, when you're desperate and have cut off your options). i guess it may be possible with mass summonings and a lantern of shadows, but most of the good summonings are also limited by TSO. necromutate or undead status seems almost critical to me for Tomb-themed zig levels (whereas Pan Lord zig levels seem eminently doable due to TSO's health recovery).

consequently, Zig-diving led to my biggest point of shame in this win--a single bailout by TSO on the first zig:20 tomb level. the second zig i got in the same jam but managed to teleport around until i could ditch the silence and get tornado active. still, both times, my entire inventory was cursed and my healing options had been reduced to zero.

NOTE: it isn't stated in the wiki that zig tomb levels block teleport control. be aware!

aside from that, only Antaeus gave me a good scare, knocking me to 33hp with some fiend help. Next time will bring RElec. killed all the Hell lords and Pan lords. Cerebov was the easiest of the lot, despite my troubles with rF all game. He had no counter for a raging tornado with Sword of Jihad to his face at the center.

I found all of my katanas when they were already outclassed by other weaponry. sigh. i never got a single armor with decent resistances in the entire game; ended using a+3 elven leather with rF+. how sad is that? my crown came halfway down the first zig, when the point was already moot. boots of speed i had almost the whole game. the nice damage+ rings were pretty much all from zigs. never saw a ring of slaying all game (haven't seen one in weeks)

+10/+12 Sword of Jihad + clarity mutation, however, put this character in a class of his own :) now to try .9 with the nerfed Tornado (and no katanas :( )

And, to respect TSO for bailing me out in Zig #1, i let Mennas live.


notes for noobs (light spoils):

Food is really a non-factor. Eat sparingly early, eat well after Hive so that your spells don't put you in a bad spot (until you have the right staff, of course).

Avoid the ziggurats, unless you're trying for bragging rights. If you want to do one, see above for my difficulties.

Certain areas of the game seem like high risk for little reward at the point you usually encounter them, at least for this character type. Spider's Nest and Lair 8 almost never give me anything good, and spider's nest can be absolutely punishing if you get the one that opens with 25 centipedes immediately on a diagonal. That one is junk pay-off and an insane fight for the time that you usually see it; just leave. Ice Cave is a toss-up--worth doing if you have the resistance, otherwise probably skip. Bailey is usually a worthwhile risk. Sewers is always a go. Volcano I've only had once, it was fun but i had swiftness, flight and apportation, so...

don't convert to TSO until you're pretty sure you've got all the mutation potions you want. you can't use fulsome distillation without penance, and paying off the penance basically means scumming the Abyss. of course, if you like scumming the Abyss, go right ahead.

Zigs have an insane amount of CMut potions. on 39 levels, i saw around 30 potions (i, and this is funny after my first few L27s' fates, stopped picking them up after the first zig). do part of one zig and you don't have to worry much about any mutations if you're being blocked from completing by Tele or Berzerk. of course, if you're in a zig, you're probably past that point.

Pan Lords, by the time you see them, aren't as tough as they might seem from the wiki. the bigger concern is usually their escort or summonings. don't let them bring fiends into play, and lure any stragglers out from their nest before engaging (it's usually a 20x20ish box somewhere on the level)

Tornado cleans house in .8.

The reason this isn't stated is that it isn't true. All deep ziggurat levels can block teleport control. Tomb levels are no more likely to do it than any others.

All ice caves and spider's nests have exits right next to their entrances. Thus, if you see a nasty one, you can leave immediately with no risk. Volcanoes, baileys, and sewers are a different story: the former can engulf you in flame clouds the instant you enter, there are a couple baileys that force you to wade through several turns of crossbow bolts to get to the exit, and there's one sewer that makes you deal with a couple of bog mummies before finding the exit (note that this one was recently changed in 0.9 and is now safe).

yeah, fair enough. i guess that's a personal playstyle weakness--when i got in, i hate to leave without completing. i had to physically tear myself away from committing (further) suicide in the zigs.

Random pan lords are post-endgame Ijyb. They will seem wimpy at first, but eventually you will realize they are potentially able to kill you faster than anything else in the vicinity. As in, one of them can Fire Storm you three times before you get a single move. From the edge of LOS.[/quote]

nevertheless, it seems they are rarely out in the open--they seem to be spawned in mostly enclosed spaces (saw 35 maps, can't remember any being out in the open--the most 'open' being the three parallel halls spawn point). getting suckered into the 'smoke demon/glass window hall', starting to freeze/airstrike them and then realizing there are pit fiends in there and a Pan Lord just beyond--that one was a nice touch--kudos to the designer.

the first random pan lord i encountered was the only one that came close to killing me. after that, i was more careful about luring out their support to properly engage them. you have a definite speed advantage if you've properly set up your crusader, so one-on-one or if they have one fiend or hellion is not a big problem. 2 or more gets riskier, but berserk gives you time to deal with them (although i guess it's gone in .9)

i also hope i NEVER spawn on a hellion island. nasty. and i thought being dropped into the Pond end of Lair 8 was bad (which DID happen to me this game, for the second time)

since Berzerk, katanas, and tornado have all been modified/removed in .9, guess it's time for me to learn a new class. i'm thinking "Spellcasting Troll." this is the second release in a row that the devs will have wiped out/nerfed my class :( not sure why Reavers got the axe...
