CIP- Eucliwood Hellscythe the DENe

Here I am again; taking a break from using Shinobu to get some Eucliwood play in.

She's my first long surviving Necromancer. I realised the wisdom of not bothering with Skellies and doing what she actually does best in the Series she is from, shouting 'Shin' (die) at everyone with her words of power and having them bleed out through their nostrils (obviously she is Crawl savvy in the anime and uses Pain/Agony exclusively :) ). Early game was tough though. Deep Elf's terrible strength means you can barely carry any loot at all! And this is exerberated if you want to try and lug corpses into piles to use Create Abomination. It was a great boon that my Scroll of Acquirement gave me a +STR cape. I recently bought a +STR Leather Armour and that just about puts me on a decent enough footing to stay on, I think. Book of Envenemations giving me Spider Form early on, and then Olgrebs Toxic Radiance has helped alot, especially now I have RPois from my decent mace Randart.

Orc 4 was a bit terrifying because it an Ogre rich environment that I'd not seen before (no High Orc Priests etc. is good, but massive armies of two-headed Ogres are plenty scary). Mass Raise Dead helped alot here; after I'd inched my way in with poison and corpse rot and pain, I clashed my undead ogres against the remaining live ones and picked off the stragglers. I've now discarded using that for Abominations though, as my current trio of Large (one appears to be a Huge one going by its different tile, but its still described as Large) Abonimations has a frankly astonishing melee attack between them, especially when I leap into to help after poisoning and agonying everything I see.

Anyway here's my questions:
1. Most important: What is most important to learn next, spell wise? I immediately picked up Abjuration just now, since thats naturally a no-brainer, especially if I try Elf next, leaving me with 6 levels left.
>> I'm thinking Flight or Alistairs Intoxication (I have an Amulet of Clarity in the Stash, though see {3} below). I know I'll need Flight for Shoals or Swamp if I get them, but how useful is Alistair's?
Alternatives
>> Recall might be marginally useful, but at the moment I'm happy occassionally hitting '.' to wait for them every 4 turns, they're not too slow.
>> Why is Bolt of Draining so universally ignored? I'm tempted to try it just cuz the bots don't even list stats for it!

abjuration, huh. it's useful in elven halls of course but 12xl? or even ~14xl if you go there after lair will be cleared. elves probably will kill your low level mage pretty quickly. anyway, you are in lair atm, abjuration is useless there and alistair's intoxication (unless you meet an unique)/flight too. you will need them later, alistair's is pretty useful against evles, giants, centaurs/yaktaurs, many uniqes, etc, flight is good with swiftness and in shoals/swamp/abyss.

Sorry, to clarify, I went to this part of Lair first since I really needed to make up a Stash for my book collection; will now probably backtrack to Elf as that's standard proceedings for me (Orc 1-4, then Elf 1-3, Lair, Elf 4, Deeper Dungeon a bit, Swamp/Snake/Shoals, Vaults, Blade, Crypt)

Ouch on the Amulet. Guess I'll pull it off now and take some time to rebuild it in the forthcoming area since I've got all the gifts and further gain is fairly m00t. Or is a good idea to keep it and use it to help spam corpse delivery?

Intox is most useful in Elf5 and the entry area of Vault 8, i did rarely use it before or afterwards. May have its merits if you lack repel/deflect and encounter a Yaktaur pack maybe.
As you have sInv i think Elf1-4 would be good to go. I would suggest that you take up a buckler there, it helps a lot, especially if you tend to melee some.

Other than this you'll have to rely on other sources, my own necromancer faces similar challenges in selecting spells, and i have never finished a game with one so far.

Elf is totally not a good place to go if you are having difficulty with Orc. Swarms of demons are a possibility that Abjuration can minimize in threat, yes, but there are other threats down there too. The little popcorn elf mages that swarm everywhere occasionally get such gems on their spell list as Crystal Spear, which will frequently deal more damage than your current character has maximum hp. There's also loads of fun with Banishment, Lightning Bolts when you're standing next to a wall, Sticky Flame to burn scrolls even if you have conservation equipped, and spammed Bolts of Draining to make sure you don't level up during your visit.

You certainly might get through Elf 1-4 safely, but why bother when Lair is almost perfectly safe for you and you'll level up several times while clearing it? D up to the entrance of Vaults, and levels 1-4 of the two Snake/Swamp/Shoals branches you get are likewise easier than Elf.

You have a book with Swiftness, and it is not already on your spell list. You'll want to fix that, for sure. Solves most of the threats in the next section of the game, because you can just walk away. Pair with Flight for crazy spriggan speed, all the time.

Alistair's Intoxication is useful enough, but not in Lair so you can put off learning it. There's no real reason to put off Lair.

A monster that you've killed with Bolt of Draining will permanently lose xp, meaning you get less xp for killing it. An ogre that is worth 100xp may only be worth 90xp after you drain it to death, for instance. This is not a serious problem, but it's enough to give any form of draining a bad reputation.

This is a good goal, but Swiftness and Flight should be castable almost immediately and are startlingly strong.

You have to return to the altar. No need for Excruciating Wounds if you want the pain brand.

It'll be quite some time before you can use a Necronomicon effectively, so either pain brand now or put the decision off. Necronomicons are not horrendously rare, although it's nice to have one guaranteed. Pain branded short blades are some of the highest-damage weapons in the game, if you're focusing on necromancy, but as a deep elf you may prefer to branch into some other form of spellcasting rather than build up melee.

About ** worth of piety when you're close to the maximum. Not a big deal for a Kiku-worshipper, because she gives her line of gifts once and then she's done. The piety will come back if you kill more things. Horribly painful for a follower of Sif Muna or Okawaru, though.

All of them. Spam Haunt absolutely all the time, Death Channel things before they die to pre-harvest a minion, post-harvest the corpse after they die for another minion. Necromancers believe in using every part of their kills.

Woah, followed everyone's advice and went down to Lair 8 before Elf.

Found a Labyrinth in which the Minotaur had somehow killed itself on a Blade Trap. I picked up a staff from there that was suspiciously blue and fixedart looking, but I had no ID on me at the time, so I left it in the stash. After that, I took my army of 9 abominations into Lair 8, took out all the stuff at the bottom, and went to the hidden hell portal room in the forest.

Guess the first action of the crazy human wizard? Yup, banished to the Abyss. Right in front of a bone dragon. I had a benny hill moment of running from it, with only Regeneration keeping me from dying when I hit a random teleport (phew). Wandered around a bit, fighting off stuff and found a another suspicious green staff I took with me. Teleported again, right in front of the Abyssal Rune guarded by an Iron Golem. Grabbed it and ran again. Spent a fair few turns trying to get out, glugged most of my potions in the process, but eventually escaped with the Rune (WHEE! Eucliwood's first rune, gained totally randomly!) and an acquirement scroll to boot (not yet used).

Went back to my abominations whom had since split that little git who banished me in two, which made me happy. I opened the door to the demons and had a huge pitched battle of army vs. army with them. I supported with a Fireball wand, Agony, and a good mace'ing, letting them pour through the chokepoint with abominations on either side, and though I lost 5 aboms, all the demons were squished, clearing Lair 8.

I took my loot back to the stash, and finally ID'ed the staves to have a WTF moment of getting BOTH the Staff of Wucad Mu (from the labyrinth, and its currently +22/+13 with my INT) and the Staff of Olgreb (which will be +3/+3 with my current 9 in Poison).

I now have 8 in mace/flail and the Speed Brand Mace is still pretty amazing, but should I consider using these staves?

Wucad Mu sounds impressive with those big numbers, but is it still just a Quarterstaff with the mana evoke option? Cause, if so, my damage output won't be very good according to weaponlab, compared to my current mace, and of course I lose the ability to safely cast Toxic Radiance. I take it I probably won't be able to Pain Brand this since its an artifact, right?

And what about Olgrebs? I can't see a way to mimic the properties the bots says it has in Weaponlab, so is its Venom Brand better than usual and worth it? Again, having a rPois is pretty critical to my strategy at the moment, so this feels more tempting to me, but I do like the speediness and power of my current Speed Brand Mace.

Well, Elf 5 was a complete bastard. I had about 7 near death experiences and lost 13 large abominations. Easily the nastiest version of it I've ever seen; the vault was in the top right rather than the usual circular one at the south I'm used to; and it was packed with Master Archers and Annihilators. Even steady funnelling bait and switch tactics weren't helping at one point when this one git just got obssessed with crystal spearing everything to death; making me lose 6 aboms before he went down. I promptly had to retreat with that; a hasty raise dead and deflect missiles covering me long enough to get upstairs; upon which I held 'a' to get more corpses from Kiku (the first time I've really used the delivery in a hardcore fashion) to make another 4 aboms. Lost a star of piety, but this just about gave me the guns to take the rest of the level, though this one master archer carrying 405 (!) +3 arrows gave me some grief temporarily.

What rubs in the evilness was that it didn't even have that great a loot selection after all that. Got a ring of wizardry, and a couple of meh weapons and thats about it... (le sigh...). Considering I have a few rPois sources, I imagine Snake won't be anywhere near as vile as that just was.

Oh yeah, I have 7 spare spell levels now. Should I go pray for my Necronomicon as soon as my piety is up again and learn Haunt? Or should I get Death Channel now and use that? Obviously I'll get both in the long run, but in the short term, which is superior?
