CIP: GhMo A change of pace

I decided to give the MdFi a break and branch out into uncharted territory and with doing so I'm trying to figure out who to pick at the temple TSO Zin and Elyvilon won't take me since i'm a Ghoul and they're so /high/ and /mighty/. Anyways this is my first GhMo or however you abbreviate it to make it to the temple after losing one with a nice vampiric spear early on (yea i know probably too early for a weapon I learned that the hard way this one doesn't have any weapons besides his claws and blowgun which really helped against an Ogre I just ran around and poisoned him). I'm probably doing something wrong with the skills, too. The altars I don't have are Zin TSO and Yredelemnul.

Re: CIP: GhMo A change of pace

Any ideas for what religion to follow I'm feeling Yre or Chei since I don't really want to sacrifice corpses since I'm having troubles already keeping away from a few turns of rotting and losing max HP. Of course this is just the very start of the game and the later levels have tons more mobs so perhaps Oka or Trog or Mekhleb are in the running. I'd like to get casting in if I can since I found that book with some somewhat nice spells like Haste which Chei wouldn't approve of.

I don't know if I can take full advantage of Oka and Trog's gifts without a weapon unless I use Oka just for armor and ammo gifts. I would like to use a weapon when my unarmed gets higher so that way I'll have the weapon + my unarmed business. I've studied the wiki for helps and it said to turn off stealth and train up combat skills then get a weapon and train up armor.

"Note that heavy armor penalizes Unarmed Combat severely, so unless (and until) you have developed other weapon skills, keep it light. So why would you even think about weapon skills? Because weapons can have extremely useful ego properties and even be artifacts - and because once you have Unarmed Combat, unarmed attacks happen in addition to melee weapon attacks!

When you start, remember to de-activate Stealth on your skill screen (command m), as you will need your experience pool to go to your combat skills first, even more than most classes. " to quote the wiki exactly.

With Int 5 it might be difficult to use the higher level spells reliably - you'll probably need a couple of +Int items or ring/staff of wizardry.

Re: CIP: GhMo A change of pace

After reading the Ghoul race wiki It says that Kiku and Yre are good choices. Kiku might be better in later game since he gives corpses in the corpse deserts where Mr. Ghoul can't find any. So I'll have to go on an adventure and find Yre's altar then potentially deal with his wrath much later.

Re: CIP: GhMo A change of pace

Oh holy sheet! MdFi ghost on D:10 a bit much to handle FFFFFFFFFFFF that was a good char too look at the stuff he had I tried to run but I can't :'( you just cannot run away from the enemies in this game unless they're like an Iron Golem or you have boots of running or something. I refuse to give up on this GhMo idea though since it SHOULD work...yet gain so should DdFi but I failed at that for a looooooong time before switching to MdFi. I swear this game trolls me. :D On a humorous note the Orcs must have been reading the Necronomicon or something since they had A LOT of zombies and skeletons around the stairs to their mines. At least it's nice to know Yre claims me as an undead slave (which I should have claimed more of with that animate remains and planned on doing so but Mr. Ogre right before Mr. Ghost decided NOT to drop a corpse) so yea hopefully the next GhMo we see around these parts will be in a YAFVP post and not another YASD. EDIT: Didn't notice that I kind of spammed with the double post until after I posted this should have edited it into the last one.

Ghost can't leave it's level, so you should just run from it and go to the next level. Or did you?

Re: CIP: GhMo A change of pace

I tried to run but it wouldn't let me go. Thus why I say that running away from mobs is next to impossible without them being Iron Golem slow or boots of running or using the slow weapon thing or something like that I could have tried pillar dancing but I'm not so good at it. Stupid Ogre not dropping a body how does that even happen? I mean did I smack him SOOOOO hard with my fists that there's literally nothing but blood left and even so it's animate corpses that's cast from a deity I'm sure Yre can turn bone dust and blood into a functioning skeleton to be my meat shield. I know it's tied to my invocations skill but still. /rant

Re: CIP: GhMo A change of pace

It does not look like you tried to run, with being invisible and levitated, and a MdFi has not much in terms of spellcasting or other tricks to stop you.
Unless you learn to avoid certain enemies Crawl will stay even more deadly for you.

Re: CIP: GhMo A change of pace

Right. You can get away from ghosts by leaving the level, but other things you can run from by not fighting them in the first place. It's harder for things to hit you when you're not in the square next to them.

Unfortunately figuring out which monsters to run from is often a matter of getting killed by them once

Re: CIP: GhMo A change of pace

Kiku may be a good god for Ghouls, but I recommend Makhleb if this combo is new for you. Kiku requires some investment before he really starts to pay off. So does Makhleb, but not as much. It's easier to build up your invocations than to learn magic from scratch, and his gifts are more immediately useful in surviving the early game. Summoned demons deserve their chance to ravage your enemies, too!

Speaking of running, running isn't the only way to escape from enemies, even in the early game. It's hard to get as far as the Temple without finding a scroll of teleport or blink, or a potion of speed, or even a wand or two (slowing, paralysis, teleport again...)
