CIP- Stereotypical the MDFi of Okawaru

I'll admit it, I have entirely too much fun naming these guys now. :)

Haven't posted a char in a while, I lost interest in trying to get a DrTm after the first few died, and when I used wizmode to test dragon form and discovered all draconians become green dragons (with different resists / breath) regardless of color. :p (I'm going to have to suggest that be fixed and submit some pallet swapped tiles some day...)

That, and I've kind of been distracted from crawl by other things. I have though been playing this guys for maybe 10 minutes at a time. Which usually is a good way t get yourself killed, but hasn't happened yet this time!

So, Stereotypical the MDFi of Okawaru. Rolled a MDFi because I wanted to try something different after my string of spriggans, and wanted to see how well heavy armor worked now. Didn't take a bezerker, because, well, I've done Trog a lot too. Haven't gone MDFi since 0.5 or 0.6, back when I first started playing, and had absolutely no idea what I was doing. Haven't gone Oka since he was redone either. So I thought it would be interesting.

On Oka: haven't had him very long, but I like the new him. Heroism is awesome, and seems even better than might used to be. The boost to everything got me through a few early encounters with trolls, ogres, orc bands etc that would have resulted in YASD otherwise.

I decided to go axes out of habit, to avoid the usual cursed blunt weapon starvation problem. I kinda regret it- I'm down to lair and orc, and I'm still using my starting (now enchanted) hand axe. Non of the orc bands had anything better, though they had lots of maces! I'm planning on doing Orc:1 next, hopping to get something a little bigger to tide me over till weapon gifts start pouting in. You know, I never realized just how few types of axes there are in the game? There are tons of long blades and maces, and a good number of polearms, but axes are down at 5 with short blades (well 4. Why should knives count?).

My choice of axe type will be further cut down to three since I've decided to go shields. I was kind of excited to try something bigger than a buckler now that I'm not playing a spriggan- I mean, if the little ones are awesome, imagine when I train up to large! I was lucky and found a dwarven buckler early on, and downgraded from my shield while training up the skill to minimize penalties. I did have armor turned off while training shields up to 10- not sure if that's a mistake. I am still getting messages that say my armor gets in the way of attacks, what skill level do I need to mitigate that? There's no neat table like for shields that I've found.

Found a dragon armor early on. The rF+++ is really nice against orc wizards, who for some reason never seem to want to cast ice spells anymore. And even with rC- I seem to be able to mele ice beasts safely! Surprising, that. The dragon armor is a better choice than the unbranded plate mails I see lying around, right? I figure the resists must be worth the small bit of AC I'm missing.

Ranged weapons: just how bad are the penalties for using a crossbow with a shield? I'd like to use something besides a sling this time for the fun of it, but I haven't found details of just how stupid this would be yet. In any event, I haven't trained either yet, I'd like to avoid the ammo gifts until Oku gets me some nice randarts for my other slots.

I think I'm trying on a simple 3 or 4 rune go this time- I kinda don't want to slog through the endgame again right now. Plus, I'd rather check another God off my win list than go TSO for the endgame.

All advice, commentary, discussion and fun are welcome. First time trying to make this kind of built work, so I might well need it. :p

Dumping.

Re: CIP- Stereotypical the MDFi of Okawaru

MDFi is great, I won one of those with old Oka (but new heavy armor). Switch that armor skill back on, it's great. Super AC really helps, and 12 is way too low to rely on. If you're not planning on casting you will have lots of spare exp anyway. CPM is pretty sweet and GDA is nice too, but both mean you probably wont be casting anything in a 3-rune game. Casting in regular dragon armor is viable, but not easy for a MD. Dragon armor is also pretty awesome early on due to the low EV penalty.

Just be careful because your escape options are really limited. Not stealthy, not fast, no blink, no meph cloud, etc. But axe to the face kills much faster than most spells, and Oka helps with this, so you probably wont have to run away much.

Unlike for shields no amount of armor skill will make the EV penalty disappear. It just reduces it by a factor while also increasing your AC by a percentage. 15 armor skill gives +100%, which also means you finally get +1 from each piece of body part armor.

Re: CIP- Stereotypical the MDFi of Okawaru

Here is a nice resource for the penalties. I copied the link from this very forum, but i don't know who was responsible creating it. Don't hesitate to link to the OP so thanks can be given where it is due :)
Anyhow:
https://spreadsheets.google.com/spreads ... l=en&gid=3

As far as ranged goes: A blowpipe with some curare goes a long way for any fighter type and does not need high skill ranks. If you keep the rank low you should be able to avoid the ammo gifts.
Slings are the only ranged weapons you can use with shields, your dwarf is only -1 in aptitude, don't let this drive you away. You have plenty of things you do different from your Spriggans, don't change everything for the spite of it.

As Axes and Maces&Flails crosstrain you can still consider switching, with a +6 aptitude you should blaze ahead in skill levels. Might get some axe gifts though...

I'd suggest you re-enable armour. Shields are easier to dance and you need some more armour skill to mitigate penalties.

Re: CIP- Stereotypical the MDFi of Okawaru

I always use a shield, axe and crossbow with my MDFi, for the flavour. I only use the crossbow for shooting escaping cowards in the back, and I don't find the penalty such a big deal.

As suggested above, I'd train armour and shields to the hilt. They are the MD's forte, so might as well max them out.

Re: CIP- Stereotypical the MDFi of Okawaru

Thanks for the quick replies!

I might swap to whips if I survive a little longer, or if I find a branded one, but for the moment, I don't think I can afford the speed penalty of starting to train a new weapon from scratch. 1 handed axes + shields does seem a bad mix now, but I really wasn't planning (expected to splat by D:3 or so). We'll see what happens. Maybe Oka will provide an awesome randart broad axe of speed that will make up for it, or maybe an awesome executioner's axe that will be worth giving up shields. I'll adapt.

Staff was enchantment. Useless for a non-caster. I think I am going to ignore trying to cast in heavy armor.

Orc failed me. Nothing good on the first floor, and the only stair down I can reach leads to an Orc Sorcerer and and high priest. Doing lair until I have to run from a hydra, then the dungeon I guess. Hive if I find rPois. Just killing things and staying alive till Oka gifts me something nice.

Armor's back on. So, if I'm reading that chart right, the

"Your dragon armor prevents you from hitting the <foo>."

messages never stop, even at armor 27?

Doesn't staff of enchantment give a large amount of MR while equipped? Sounds at least somewhat useful for a MDFi.

You're also losing a bit of GDR (btw, I updated the armour wiki page to add GDR to it). Dragon armour is especially good if you're casting, otherwise you're better with heavier armour. Unless you really need the resist (which is rF++, not rF+++ btw) and can compensate for rC-.

mageykun wrote:Ranged weapons: just how bad are the penalties for using a crossbow with a shield?

It's a big penalty to attack speed. So if you're only using it to finish off fleeing enemies like Grimm, this shouldn't be a problem. If you're using it to kill enemies from afar, then it seriously impairs your damage output.

Re: CIP- Stereotypical the MDFi of Okawaru

I misspoke- I knew dragon armor only gives two pips of rF, I had the 3rd from something else. Actually turned out to be real handy in the lair, I've run into a few more fire drakes than usual, and a windwurm too! (I think that may be the first non-shapeshifter one of those I've seen outside of a volcano). So I think I'll stick with it for a while, at least till I get some crazy randart.

Had an interesting labyrinth. It showed up on a floor absolutely filled with packs of monsters- most notably packs of elephants. I used my wand of invs to sneak and, and planned to use it to sneak out, except I burned it out. Luckily, heroism handled them!

Upgraded to a better axe I found on the floor. Still considering changing to whips if I find a nice one.

Re: CIP- Stereotypical the MDFi of Okawaru

Yup. Found me that nice unrand in the labyrinth.

Forgot to mention- found my first ever spider's lair this game. Kind of anticlimactic- entered, grabbed some gold, had a trapdoor spider appear in front of me, realized something had drained all my mp so I couldn't use heroism on it (invisible eyes of draining?), and bravely ran away. Basically, I traded a scroll of blinking for some gold. :p

Hmm. I'm in a bit of a pickle now though.

  Code:
You climb downwards.
You smell decay. Yuck! (slot b)
There is a stone staircase leading up here.
A five-headed hydra comes into view.
The five-headed hydra roars!
Move the cursor to view the level map, or type ? for a list of commands.
Returning to the game...

You can see a five-headed hydra.

What's my best option here? Use the wand of invs and run for the stairs? Tele seems too risky, I know there's a crowd elsewhere on the level (inventory, stats, equips etc. same as in the last dump).

Re: CIP- Stereotypical the MDFi of Okawaru

Maybe tele then invis (before the teleport kicks in), then run. Invis won't stop the hydra hitting you, but you'll probably survive until the tele. Then if you end up near other monsters, you'll be invisible so hopefully will be able to run away before they see you.
