First time posting here, but I really like this character so far, and figured I'd ask for some advice before it turns into yet another ghost :)

I've currently got a lvl 13 Red Draconian conjurer who's branching out into fire magic. I've also started putting some points into fighting and long blades to diversify away from pure spells, which has been serving me nicely. I've got a couple of questions about where I should go with this character:

1) How far should I train which magic skills? Right now I'm Cj 11, FM 8, and Sp 12. I got Lee's Rapid Deconstruction from vehumet, and decided to learn it, with the intent of actually being able to cast it once I find some easier earth spells to train with. Is fire/earth a good pairing of schools with conjurations?

2) How much should I focus on combat skills? It seems like I should be able to get this character at least ok at combat, since I've got the draconian armor increases and no evasion penalty to hamper dodging. Right now I've got Fighting at 10, Long Blades almost to 5, and Dodging at 8. (I stopped training stealth at 3.) Where should I go with these vs. my spell casting skills?

3) Which runes are good to go for first? I've found snakes and shoals so far, both of which I cleared before with a DDNe and lots of summons. Snake seemed easier, so probably that? Plus I have bad cold resistance right now, so the ice mage at the bottom of shoals worries me. What's a good plan for getting runes?

Your skillset is pretty good though I probably wouldn't have trained spellcasting quite so high at this point in the game. Also wouldn't have trained long blades, your melee weapon should be for popcorn and you want to invest nothing in weapon skill until late in the game, ideal early weapons for casters are a short blade of poison/elec/distort, later a magic staff (and much later you can put skill into staves if you want). But since you've already got skill in long blades just keep the scim for now, but stop dumping xp into long blades.

As for what to train, right now with this character I would train fire magic to the same level as conj in anticipation of a veh gift and to take advantage of the good apt. Though if Veh gifts orb of destruction, then I'd pump conj (to get orb castable) then spellcasting (so I don't starve after a few orbs). If you find some good evokables (an energy staff would be wonderful) then I'd pump evocations instead. Regardless of what the dugeon or Veh gives I wouldn't train earth magic. Training to get lrd castable is a bad idea, you already have some pure conjurations for damaging fire resistant stuff. Maybe if you find iron shot, but even then I wouldn't train too much earth magic.

Later once you get orb of destruction and/or bolt of fire castable (barring really bad luck you should be gifted at least one of these or find one in the dungeon) then you can go back to pumping fighting/dodging. If you were a squishier species I'd advocate training fighting/dodging earlier, but as a nice beefy draconian your defenses are good for a long time. Just remeber if you run out of mana and something ugly is closing in teleport away before it gets into range and you're at 30 hp.

The single most important thing you can do right now is to remove the ring of fire that gives you cold vulnerability. Walking around with an X is really bad, but an X in rC on a Draconian is particularly terrible because cold attacks can slow you. Stick with the +3 dex until you can negate the rC- from the ring of fire.

I would not have bothered learning Lee's Rapid Deconstruction and I would not bother training up earth just for that purpose. You already got Mystic Blast for dudes that resist fire. There isn't a compelling reason to have it except to try it out for your own curiosity, and even in that case I'd still hold out training earth magic until later in the game. In general you only want to train enough spell casting to get the spell levels you need; you are fine right now (slightly overtrained if anything, but it isn't a big deal).

That flail is not worth carrying around. The scimitar of flaming is the best melee weapon you have in your inventory, and the only one you need right now. Pick up a blowgun and some poisoned needles and (especially!) any curare needles you come across, though. Keep your eyes out for a buckler or (even better) a shield, also.

Your AC+EV and HP are good for this stage of the game, though bringing EV up to ~20 and getting a bit more long blades skill (bring it up to 8 or 9 total) would be reasonable next goals. After that, see what else is available and plot your next moves.

General order for branches: Dungeon until Lair (I'll usually do a bit more D if I come across Lair really early, like on D8 or early D9); clear Lair; Dungeon until Orc if not already found; clear Orc; clear Dungeon until 15. Then I would clear Snake and get the rune. Then I would do Vaults 1 to 4.

That's just a schematic, though. Adjust based on what actually spawns; a really nasty level with tons of uniques or nasty spawns should make you consider going to a different area for a while and coming back later.

Re: CiP: DrCj 13 of Vehumet: what skills?

I've cleared out the lair and the orc mines and picked up a few more spells, books, and items along the way.

For spells, I've dropped Lee's Rapid Deconstruction (amnesia scroll), and picked up fire bolt. I'm currently training charms to make haste usable. (Picked up a book of wizardry.)

Item-wise, I've swapped my ring of fire for a ring of cold resistance I bought from a shop in orc 4. My weapon right now is a scimitar of protection, but I've also got a staff of power and a staff of fire in my inventory. Should I hold onto the scimitar for the AC, or would I be better off swapping for one of the staves?

Staff of fire no question in this case. It's better defensively (one more pip of rF takes you to rF++), offensively (since you have good skills in fire, it will cause some decent fire damage when you hit stuff with it) and most importantly you're right now at the sweet spot where spell power enhancers have an excellent effect - your spells have decent spellpower to multiply, but you're still far from where the spellpower stepdown will make the multiplier effect less powerful than it is. Try it and see - you'll find that you'll need much fewer casts of bolt of fire to killdudes with the staff.

Note: Now if you find a good weapon, though, like a good artifact, or a demon blade with a good brand, by all means switch to it if you find that it's better damage than the staff. But the +4 scimitar of protection is just floor trash at this point.

I'd use that ring of fire now, when you have source of rC+. It will boost your performance somehow and 16->13 drop in Dex won't make thing much worse (you'll loose ~2 EV I think). If you find staff of fire, it would be wise to use it. Also you can swap for scimitar when monsters get close, but I don't think it is a good weapon to fight with mid-late game monsters.
Haven't Vehumet gave you IOOD? It is a perfect spell for almost any fire-resistant enemy (except for shield-bearers). It hits hard and almost never misses (yeah, little pesky blademasters!). Ctlr + f for "destruction", you may find one.
I won't recommend you focus too much on melee since you are a Vehumetant. You replenish mana on your kills and can cast again. I'd better train that stealth to 10-12. Mages often benefit from being unseen until they unleash firetorm on heir foes.

I was cruising through snake 5 and got a bit cocky. I was running low on mana and saw a greater naga, and decided that 10 mana + breath would be enough if I got it up the stairs. Then it constricted me on the stairs. Back to square 1...

Greater nagas are pretty scary, yeah.

Btw, MR+++++ is an overkill for pretty much any situation in the game - somewhere around mid-MR+++ is usually enough to win (though hexes still sometimes go through low-MR+++, MR++++ if you can afford it and want to be sure. I'm saying it because you had MR++ from that bad lajatang I assume you were committed to using "for resists", and with that amount of MR you'd benefit more from pretty much any other ring but MR one - that Dex ring would've given you a bit more EV, and if you knew about that Int ring, you could've gotten a bit more punch for your spells as well.

Shame about dying, but here are some other pointers that might be helpful for future games.
1) Haste (the spell) is awesome, but even as a caster I usually wait until much later in the game to bring it online, if ever. This is because usually I'll find enough haste potions/a wand of hasting, that give all the haste I need. However if I'm trying to bring deflect missiles online for more defense then the haste spell is worthwhile since I'm training charms anyways.
2) You had 10 shields, but no shield? Also usually a caster sticks with a buckler for a long time before upgrading to a normal shield, if ever, so there's no need to train shields that high unless there's a pressing reason to wear a normal shield. For an example of when to train shields early, I had one game where a MuCj found a shield of fire resistance fairly early on, and it was the only source of rF that it had. Or if you find a great randart shield, then you can consider investing in more shield skill early.
3) Once bolt of fire is up and running sticky flame is obsolete for the most part. You want to blast stuff at range, not get up close. Sticky flame is good early on because it is easy to get online and is very mana efficient, so its drawbacks (need to be in melee range, and doing damage over time instead of all at once) are outweighed by these benefits for awhile. By the time you have bolt of fire/other lvl 6 spells online, sticky flame's damage is middling at best and not worth the 4 spell slots or the turn it takes to cast.
4) This is a matter of preference, but usually I like to push conjurations very high compared to other magic skills when playing conjurors. You only need to invest heavily in one spell school and still get to have other damaging spells like bolt of fire/cold castable, and you can whip out OOD for heavy hitters like greater nagas or elemental resistant/immune targets like crystal guardians. And even if you don't get orb of destruction the xp isn't wasted. However pushing conjurations is not for all characters (this guy would want Veh to gift fire spells and had +2 fire apt so pushing more fire magic early on would be better).

I don't think haste was "wrong" to get, but it'd look better a bit later (more spellpower/melee first). Incidentally, having 14 spell levels free and haste and some charms skill but not memorizing haste is bad. (I'd want a bit less Spellcasting, more Conj/Fire, but what you have is ok too).

Stickyflame + conjure flame + melee is a really good thing for FE even in the endgame.

Having fire/conj roughly equal (with more fire given your apt) is very reasonable for the spells you had. Overtraining Conj for Orb of Destruction as the Alligator says is fine only if you actually have and are using OoD. Train for what you're doing, don't make your character worse to avoid "wasting" xp from an endgame point of view.
