Here is a flowchart for you to follow:
1) Wait some place safe (= far from unexplored territory) for your contam to end.
2) Cast haste and approach the Zot:5 fault.
3) When any monsters come into view, back away from them; lure them at least 10 tiles away from any unexplored territory (esp. the vault itself). The reason for doing this is because casting spells makes noise - noise attracts monsters it reaches - more monsters means you have to fight with low mp.
4) iron shot/whatever the monster to death.
5a) If you're about to die use death's door and controlled blink away (= on a path to the nearest upstairs). You have 5 potions of magic := you can do this at least 5 times.
5b) If the monster is dead, move to the upstairs and rest until full hp and mp. Since you retreated before and after engaging, you minimize the number of things that will notice and attack you while you're resting, and even if something finds, you can immediately go < and finish the rest on zot:4.
6) GOTO 1;

Also:
-Watch out for orb guardians and moths of wrath. A berserk orb guardian moves faster than even a hasted player, hits as hard as a ton of bricks and gains tons of hp. EXTREME caution.
-An orb of fire is naturally hasted, can mutate you if it has line of fire, and can cast fireballs and bolts of fire for up to ~120 damage (60 with rF+, 40 with rF++). Don't treat these lightly. If your haste has worn off, even if you're contaminated, re-haste now, because fighting or fleeing non-hasted will give you even more mutations or kill you anyway.
-Ancient liches have all the nasty tricks in the book - crystal spear, paralyze, summon greater demon (hell sentinels, brimstone fiends, etc). BUT, they can be silenced which prevents them from casting (doesn't work on orbs of fire or demons since they don't have to talk to cast). If the spell Silence has spawned in your game, you can use a melee weapon to bonk them to death. (They have good HP, AC, EV and resistances, though, so that quick blade of stabbing probably can't even pierce their defenses.) Or you can max out your MR, haste and kite them at the edge of LoS with fire storm or anything else long-distance, since if you haste and they don't you're faster, and you can disengage any time by walking until they're out of LoS then.
-Do not, under any circumstances, back yourself into the vault and let yourself be cornered. If you're in the vault and see something, always walk on a path that would let you leave the vault if you keep walking down it. The orb vault is PACKED FULL of monsters, and fighting in it will bring multiple orbs of fire + ancient liches down on you.
-Make sure to swap the ring of poison resistance out based on what you're fighting - rF for orbs of fire, MR for anything that slows or paralyzes, rC otherwise, rPois only against the few things that poison here (I think poison breath is the only thing? so you could just keep it off until poison gas is breathed at you then quickly pop it on).
-Do NOT forget that you have 7 potions of resistance. Quaffing one gives you rF+ rC+ rPois rElec rAcid for a good duration. Zot:5 is the best time of all to use them, of course.
-Pop Clarity on instead of Gourmand. You're not going to run out of food before beating the game, so.
-Consider popping brilliance if you really really need to fire storm something. You have 6 left after all.
-Don't forget that lantern of shadows reduces your line of sight by 2 the instant you wield it - this could save your life in a pinch (that said, death's door is even better).
-I would use a staff of fire, conjuration or energy instead of the staff of power. After all - if you kill everything one on one, you don't need an extra ~10 MP on your limit, because nothing survives that many conjurations in a row.

EDIT: And don't forget to keep deflect missiles up - unless I'm misreading the dump, it's down right now.

EDIT 2: I think the robe of night would be better body armour choice than that faerie dragon armour - anyone else want to weigh in?

Excellent advice above this!
Just to stress: since you are going to end this game after Z:5 quaff all the buffs and use all the consumables! Now or never! Go all out! Any scrolls of summoning left? They are really really really strong in Z:5.
Rings: its tedious, but if you tailor your rings to every single enemy you fight its going to help a lot. You know you can examine enemy spellcasters with xv, right? Take care to swap rC in for stuff that has cold attacks, and rF if you fight orb of fire. rPoison should mostly be necessary against golden dragon breath/green draconians (and Killer Klowns, but even against them I'd probably wear rC). I would strongly advice against melee- while you have awesome AC, your EV is not there and no damage output to speak of.
Armour: Normally robe of night or archmage would probably be better for a char- unfortunately you did not train a lot of dodging, so I'd probably advice against changing. Robe of night has the benefit of effectively increasing the range of eg. iron shot and it reduces the number of new tiles revealed each step. Archmage means a lot more juice behind your conjurations. Just for the record: the Fairy Dragon Armour is nothing else than a fully enchanted mottled dragon armour. As Deep Elf you should have enough Enchant Armour scrolls to make your own, without having to wear bad egos from Fairy. Just chop up dragons until you have a hide, just in case.
You know that cblink and scrolls of blink work different in -ctele levels, right?

If your stairs are a long way from the entrance to the orb vault it's a good idea to obsessively circle back to make sure your exit plan is clear. Zot 5 seems to have an oddly high rate of encountering spawned or wandering enemies between you and the upstairs, probably because pulling each enemy out of the vault one by one takes such a long time.

Also, there are often teleport traps in the chambers on Zot:5 which cause monsters to appear in cleared areas.

Probably, because OP has trained zero Armour (this is a mistake, OP). You'd take a 6 AC hit, gain back some EV; the chief benefit would the reduced LOS. That's a pretty big benefit in Zot 5.

Also, planning on cblinking away in event of danger is quite risky in Zot:5 because of -cTele. At best you get a semi-controlled blink. It might be that Controlled Blink the spell always gives you this, but I believe scrolls of blinking will be purely random 50% of the time. With DDoor you might still be okay, but no real reason to risk it.

CBlink is always semicontrolled, scrolls of blinking are always uncontrolled.

I'd use Archmagi, I think - but Robe of night also looks better than that Faerie Dragon.

The big benefit of Robe of Night is that fire storm can be cast out of your LoS with it on - so if you see something dangerous you can haste, kite it out of LoS, and keep fire storming the edge of LoS until you feel more experienced. Cheap and effective.

Hooray! :D I did it. Thank you for the advice. I don't know that I would've been patient enough at Z:5 otherwise. The Robe of Night was useful for the shorter range with Iron Shot. I'm embarrassed I forgot to train armor, though. :oops: What kind of dodging/armor skill levels would you recommend for a DeCj arriving at Z:5?

By the way CBlink lets you choose the general direction but not distance or precise direction in -CTele, at least in Z:5 & after.

Yay, 1st ascension is a cool thing, especially not as a MiBe.
If you are wearing a robe, I'd recommend you to have 0 armour skill and invest into something more valuable, like Stealth. Believe me, it is really helpful for frail casters!
And some math: armour skill reduces encumberance penalty and increase AC. The increase is roughly baseAC*armourSkill/22 (or it was like that). Anyway, robe has baseAC = 2 which means that in order to get +1AC you have to rain your armour skill from 0 to 11. And another +1AC for training from 11 to 22. Your robe of the Night already has +4 on it, it worth much more than you can do with armour skill.
If you want to cast in not-too-heavy armour (it is quite easy to cast in ring mail if you manage to get a good randart), you'll definitely want to train some armour to reduce penalty a bit.

armour skill includes your other items in that calculation, so it's base ac 5 in a hat and 6 in a helmet. Getting 11 skill might be reasonable, or at least 5-6.

Not quite right. Armor skill works off all base AC, not just body armor. robe(2) + gloves(1) + boots(1) + cloak(1) = 5. 22/5 = 4.4. So it's probably worth it, even in a robe, to increase armor skill to 4.4 for +1 AC, as those points will be fairly cheap. Changing the hat out for a helmet would make it 22/6, or 3.67 points per +1 ac,

While training armor skill is usually a good idea, it's never a good idea to train armor skill for the purpose of lowering spellcasting failure rates. Train the relevant spell school or even spellcasting before you train armor for this purpose.(But again, it's a good idea to train armor skill anyway, especially in ring mail)
