I've got about 900 exp in the bank, wondering what to do. Should I start building up short/long swords at all? Stabbing works well, but I don't have a guaranteed way to stab, if they wake up before I get next to them then I have to just melee. Stalkers start with +2 dagger and I've been able to use all the enchant weapon scrolls on it so far. I was also kinda luck with my first book pickup, a book of fire. Most of it is too high level to be useful, but fire brand is a nice weapon buff when stabbing fails. Or maybe I could just victory dance most of exp with passwall/fire brand to hopefully put more into spellcasting, maybe build more transmutation and earth/fire/charms.

What's the progression I should be going for?

Edit: Also, some vampire questions. How do mutations work with them? Every time I stumble upon a mutation potion, I lose max hp as if through rot, and sometimes go dopey for a temporary int loss. I can regain the hp through heal potions or heal wound potions, but cure mutation doesn't do anything. Do vampires never mutate? It says they never need to breath. I figured it means they could walk through water, but that's not the case. Does not breathing affect anything?

Vp can do various stuff. Fire wont be that useful to you though, it's mostly about conjurations which you are bad at. Maybe learn Conjure flame if you find it, it will stay useful for a very long time (enemies are really stupid, and clouds hurt low AC targets badly). Necromancy and transmutations are your strongest schools, and they are indeed quite nice ones. Both don't work well on undead though, and at bloodless you are essentially undead (more on that later).

Long Blades and Unarmed are indeed your best bet for melee. Unarmed is really really strong at high levels, and you get a free auxiliary attack from your teeth. Always use a short blade for stabbing though. Long blades have the advantage of brands and possibly useful artifact enchantments.

About the mutations: vampires go from alive to undead depending on satiation level. This changes HP regeneration rate (undead form doesn't regen), resists (undead form gets rc++, rneg+++, rtorm), potion use (undead form uses them at half effectiveness), stealth (undead form is stealthier), abilities (undead form can change into a bat), spell hunger, and hunger rate. And mutation resistance. Undead cant mutate, they rot instead. Living beings get mutated. So you will get mutated while alive, and rotted while undead, with a chance for either in between. Everything else is also a gradual change from alive to undead, with 3 states in between.

Ugh, I got foolish in the lair. I was on level 3 fighting a blink frog, he was almost dead, and was I. I missed, he killed me. I might start playing wizards more, they've got blink to help soften the blow of my sometimes reckless tactics.

That's interesting about vampires though, you continuously walk the line between alive and undead. I'll have try to only drink unidentified potions when alive, though it seems like it takes a lot of work to stay at the alive level, lots of blood. I've found that I like to stay between thirsty and near bloodless, that way I at least get poison resistance.

...How strange would a vampire wizard or warper be? I'm sure they're not ideal, though I'd like to try some backgrounds with access to blink, and I'm having fun learning vampires for now.

If you are into your Vampires and roleplay - look at the White Wolf RPG - they had a whole clan of Vampire wizards - the Tremere.

I'm not sure what the white wolf rpg is. Google turned up a white wolf.com, looks like they've made a bunch of games? Did they do the vampire bloodlines games?
