YASD - MuFe

Normally I'm the first to admit that it was my fault whenever I die in the game(greed, hubris, etc), but this is a case I believe to be an exception to that.

I was at full health, full mana, I go down a staircase to a 'new' floor, and die instantly without even seeing the level. I have to assume it was just flooded with things that all instantly turned on me. This was an extremely frustrating death. I don't think pre-buffing Shroud would have saved me, so I'm not sure what I could have (reasonably) done differently to avoid this.

Tactically, you probably did nothing wrong, but this is why Orc Mines are very risky to do when your HP is low, because there is a high concentration of enemies, usually grouped right around staircases, with a large propensity of smiters. (Though I don't know what else was going on in this game, maybe floor 12 of dungeon was hellishly dangerous and Lair:1 had some nasty uniques, so in context it was not unreasonable to take a chance on the Mines and you just got really unlucky.)

Yeah, it was my only real place left to go. Both Dungeon and Lair found me a number of Fire Drakes circling around key areas that were hard to avoid. And I had neither found a way to deal with them yet, nor was able to survive against them long.

Should I have trained Dodging/Fighting/Armor sooner and taken a hit to my magic? Or is it right to focus on my offensive prowess and count on my positioning to keep me alive?

I died before I got a chance to act. I went down a staircase to a new floor and died literally instantly. On that turn. I had a pretty good feeling those scrolls were fear, and would have used one without hesitation. But I died from full health on the turn I went down the stairs.

Oh, I see. I didn't realize it wasn't first entrance to the level, it guarantees first move otherwise.
Still don't have more than 1 instance of unidentified scroll, it's better to have 2 scrolls of fear than 3 unknown scrolls.

Yeah, common Orc thing of having multiple disconnected 'rooms' on the same floor. Had already gone down and cleared out one of them. So I went back up to the second floor, and descended down a different staircase. So while I had technically been on that floor before, that was my only way to that section barring a teleport(very risky) or digging(which I didn't have/wouldnt feel the need to use even if I did)

Well, training more stealth *might* have prevented this death. But it sure is a tough one to swallow.

I always feel that what lead to death can be traced back to decisions you made in few turns ago to maybe a thousand turns ago, all the way to the start of the game. The game is a set of decisions, affected by noise which is basically RNG. Some of this noise you can anticipate, some you cannot. There are certain decisions you could have made that could have avoided that death, GIVEN that you know how you died. In retrospect you could have done different things. For example, If all you cared was winning, it would probably be wise to have chosen a combo that is likely to win depending on how good you are at this game, and that is also part of the decision making in this game.

But really in such a scenario, the decision that lead to your death was some combination of choosing a mummy and sitting down at 3pm or so on 12th of May sipping a cup of tea and thinking to yourself hmm maybe its time to play some crawl; and maybe its time to explore orcs; maybe I might get some AWESOME LOOT or something. What I'm trying to say is that in the end it is a series of choices that you made that lead to that death. HOWEVER, given a certain decision making threshold, say 10 turns, in SOME situations you can make informed choices that could ensure (say >90% probability) your surivival as opposed to choices that ensure your death. In such a situation if rational thought escaped you, then it is probably your fault and you could have made a better decision; and that comes with experience.

This in my opinion is not such a case. So no reason to beat yourself over it, its just a part of the game you have to learn to accept.
