CiP: TrMo, currently atheist

Hello, good people. I am still at it. Unarmed combat all the way, and much experimentation with different races just to see which ones make promising monks. Minotaur still seems on top, though a Demonspawn can become stronger with good mutations if it survives into the mid-or-late game. Minotaurs are generally easier to do this with.

Trolls are a race that seems extremely powerful as monks, but I often get them killed in or around Lair because that is around when you encounter enemies that hit hard, are faster than you, and may even have a ranged attack. My trolls never have the AC or EV to deal with this, and usually die quite horribly after long, difficult attempts to stay alive. This one, however, has gotten lucky. It found an early potion of experience, I think unidentified in a shop (and therefore for only 26 gold!). After much thought, I put all of its experience into dodging, turning this otherwise not particularly lucky troll into the one with probably the highest EV I've ever managed to get on one.

I'm a little sore at dodging after losing a very nice demonspawn to a few lucky minotaur hits. Guess I should have been a minotaur. However, I trusted it anyway and it really seems to have paid off. He's a pretty damn hard to hit troll right now.

I'll put this frankly: how do I not get this one killed? The RNG hath been most merciful to it, and hath given it its blessing; now, surely, it shall face great trials and dangers, and it will be overcome if I am not wise in my decisions.

There are lots of potentially cool deities to run with for this troll, but what I really *want* is Jiyva. Going atheist until that late into the game is a serious handicap, though, and considering my track record with trolls I might not want to intentionally make things harder for myself. It's not so much Jiyva's abilities that attract me to it, though I really do like them; it's that it means I never have to look outside of Lair for three runes, and the Vaults are a hellhole now.

Thoughts, comments, advice, criticism, and any other sort of discussion is much appreciated.

Re: CiP: TrMo, currently atheist

1) Go to a cleared level.
2) Read all unidentified scrolls.
3) Read all scrolls of identify on all unidentified potions.
4) Drop all scrolls of enchant weapon because you'll never hold a weapon anyway (or I guess you could use them on the first blowgun you see for curare)
5) Use the wand of invisibility and the wand of teleportation to not die. (Also lots of Crate's law.)
6) If you see an altar of Elyvilon, TSO or Zin, you can worship them for free, because if you abandon them, their wrath never kicks in unless you worship one of the evil gods, of which Jiyva is not one. Even if you don't train invo at all, or decide to use their abilities at all, they have a chance to save your life instead of you dying, and if e.g. you take Elyvilon you can hoover up all the weapons in the dungeon and get a few invo 0 casts of minor healing or be able to turn on lifesaving.

Zin doesn't like you switching to chaotic gods either, and Jiyva counts. (The others are Xom, Lugonu and Makhleb.)

Alright. Thanks; I did not know this about the good gods. I've never been with Elyvilon. Any helpful guidelines for making good use of the advantages Ely provides while I try to make it down to Jiyva?

About how far will 10 dodging skill get me before I should consider raising it again? It would take a very long time to get it much higher on the low level monsters I'm currently still fighting. At the moment, I'm just raising unarmed combat and fighting, with an emphasis on the former.

Zin doesn't like you switching to chaotic gods either, and Jiyva counts. (The others are Xom, Lugonu and Makhleb.)

The evil gods are Beogh, Lugonu, Kikubaaqudgha, Yredelemnul, Makhleb. So Zin would have hated Lugonu and Makhleb anyway. But Xom and Jiyva are good points (Jiyva being the only one that you'd care about normally playing the game, hah, how about that)

Alright. Thanks; I did not know this about the good gods. I've never been with Elyvilon. Any helpful guidelines for making good use of the advantages Ely provides while I try to make it down to Jiyva?

-Until ** piety, you can pray over a weapon to break it and receive piety. After ** piety, only 'evil' weapons increase it further (draining and pain and demon and venom? and stuff, IIRC).
-You need good invo to make use of healing enemies to pacify them, but unless you were going to train invo anyway, don't do it just for Elyvilon. Invo also increases the strength of using lesser/greater healing on yourself (which does cost piety). Involess lesser healing doesn't give a huge amount of HP - a mere 2d3 + 1.
-If you're in a hairy situation you can turn on 'Divine Protection' which will increase Elyvilon's likelihood in a piety-dependent way of saving your life if you would have died instead. However, Elyvilon penance will turn on if you kill a natural creature during Divine Protection. (Demons, undead, holies, etc are fine, and merely injuring them is also fine.)
-I think you can get into penance with a good god then abandon them and the penance is not acted out, but I don't remember well enough so don't quote me on it.
Again, you're basically only getting ely because there's no downside to abandoning her for jiyva and because she might do lifesaving on you if you seriously fuck up. It's just better than having no god in the mean time.

Re: CiP: TrMo, currently atheist

Until a certain piety level, you can gain piety with Ely by sacrificing any weapons, and you always get piety from sacrificing evil weapons, which consist of demon weapons of all kinds, as well as any weapons with pain or draining ego, and also probably artefact weapons that are evil like Sword of Zonguldrok or Cerebov's Sword. Ely has no particular beef with venom and thus after a certain piety level you cannot sacrifice poison needles, weapons of venom, etc., as they don't count as evil in Ely's view.

Died in the Abyss. Of course. Always the Abyss. Because thrashing horrors, vampires, and everything else that lives down there is just right for an XL 11 character. Lesson: just don't ever melee Sonja, even if your wands are out of charges and you don't seem to have much of a choice besides trying to run.

Thread still open as I will be trying TrMo until I win, but dear God is there really no way to stay the hell out of what is ostensibly an optional branch? I can't find a way. I don't want to see the place, smell it, be in it, and I especially don't want to get sent there against my will, but anything with a distortion weapon will send you there, ogre mages (which are found by the dozens later) can send you there, elves can send you there, Erolcha can send you there, liches can send you there, messing with distortion weapons in general can send you there, decks can send you there, etc. etc. etc. Lugonu starts you in it. Oh, joy. Do we really need this many ways to get send to this optional branch that has evidently been designed solely as a punishment and a killhole for players that make any number of mistakes in the game?

(complaincomplaincomplain)

I shall return to the thread when I have another TrMo going that looks to be getting somewhere. Apologies. Apparently, making a thread marks my characters for Abyssal doom somehow.

Don't fight enemies when they have distortion weapons.

ogre mages (which are found by the dozens later) can send you there, elves can send you there, Erolcha can send you there, liches can send you there

Kill them quickly or avoid the fight if you don't have enough MR.

Three general problems with trolls and possible solutions:

  • Bad defence as they start with low AC and low EV.
Consider starting with a fighter as you will enter the dungeon with a shield. Shields are not as important as AC or EV but better than no defence. Although they reduce your UC it's worth wielding them.
  • No ranged attacks in early game as rocks are uncommon at early levels.
Consider starting with a hunter, this will give you rocks from the very start.
  • You are detected immediately as trolls' stealth is very bad.
Consider pushing at least some XP into stealth. -4 aptitude is bad but early skill levels are always cheap.

Re: CiP: TrMo, currently atheist

I am trying out Makhleb. I've really not given it much of a chance yet and I'm finding that all of these gods that I completely ignored while I had berserkeritis are really awesome. Makhleb's healing sounds nice on a troll, and it sounds like I get a ranged energy attack as well to deal with things like hydras that will kill me in melee.

I'm really not sure about the demon summoning abilities, though. They sound like they can very easily backfire. How much can I expect them to help me? Can I use them like Brothers in Arms i.e. any old situation where I think I need the help, or should it only be used in pure desperation? The idea of making a bad situation almost unwinnable by spending a turn to land a hostile demon next to me is not appealing. Everything else sounds great and I'm looking forward to playing around with it. Wish me luck.

The trick to makhleb demon summoning is instead of using it at 50% or lower hp, use it before you've even lost any HP. Then if it's hostile you can abandon ship right away and not be in too much danger.

Re: CiP: TrMo, currently atheist

All of makhleb's active abilities except lesser destruction can backfire to a certain extent. Basically, the trick is 1.) not to use them in situations when you absolutely need a 100% reliable form of help as a last resort; 2.) don't use them on a character that is too low level such that a misfire can gank your character; 3.) don't use them if you lack a way to escape (like ?teleportation) if needed. (Lesser destruction can be used much more liberally/cavalierly, however.)

Keep the above in mind, however, and they are extremely powerful abilities. And for a troll you don't have to worry about 2. as much, cause you are a giant sack of HP. Just summon them early in a fight; if it comes out hostile, you are still at (nearly) full HP to retreat.

For quite some time, summoning two or three lesser servants will be safer than a greater servant, and still sufficiently powerful to clear tough fights. Once you get into depths though your lesser servants will start to be definitively outclassed, but at that point a hostile greater servant summon is not that scary, either.

Getting invocations ~6 or 7 when lesser servants become available would be a good idea. If you like the conjurations-like abilities, put in a bit more. Eventually you'll want 11 or 12 invocations for greater servant. You can go a bit higher than that late game if you find yourself liking the major destruction a lot.

Re: CiP: TrMo, currently atheist

Makhleb is a very helpful fellow to have around. This is probably the earliest I've ever been able to take on a bailey with orc knights and warriors in it (unfortunately, the only loot was a bunch of gold, but at least that means more money to spend on Orc shops if they have anything nice in them).

I love minor destruction so far and am definitely raising invocations. Very, very nice to have a ranged bolt attack on a character with too low int to hope to learn most spells of that type.

I am *seriously* considering using that enchant armour scroll right here and now to get steam dragon armour. I feel like I should take what I can get. Waiting till Lair:8 and trying to wrest a hide from a fire dragon or something has never, ever worked out for me, I don't think. However, sometimes I only find two or three scrolls and in that case I'd be stuck with +0 steam dragon armour for a long time. It's better than a +0 robe, though, is it not?

EDIT: I did. Just couldn't pass up the armour upgrade.

EDIT: Psyche is hanging out on D:10, and Lair hasn't been generated yet. Her spell set includes paralysis and haste, and she has a hill giant following her around. I had to use both my blinking scrolls to get away, and I didn't even try to fight her or anything. Feeling a bit down about the consumable use, but it's better than dying I guess.

EDIT: Fell down a shaft two floors after going downstairs from Psyche, had to run from ravens and Tengu warriors and go downstairs again, and finally killed by an eight headed hydra, an orc priest, and a centaur warrior.

Sometimes the game really just wants you dead.

Re: CiP: TrMo, currently atheist

Promising character dead in the abyss to a lich while running from three unborns. XL 11 when it got there, 12 when it died.

I would mind the Abyss a lot less if it did not throw the same monsters at all characters indiscriminately. An XL 12 character is not ready for a lich, or three unborns at once, or raijus, or starcursed masses, or most anything that I see down there besides minor demons and abominations. The lich summoned an *ice fiend* on me. How am I supposed to survive for even two turns with an ice fiend and a lich around when I am level freaking *12*? I can't even blink. Teleport takes forever. I like the flavor of the Abyss but I just don't see why an XL 11 or 12 character should be forced to try (and most likely fail) to deal with far into post-endgame-level enemies just because some goblin got really lucky.

Found three ways down deeper and one altar to Lugonu, which I should have taken because Makhleb's wrath would have been more survivable than the Abyss, apparently.

Well, if after twenty tries you don't succeed, try, and try again.

I'm not as mad as I sound. Figured I should point it out considering how much I rant about it. I am having a *ton* of fun, Abyss or no. I just need to...find some way to better my tactics and stop getting Abyssed. And the above complaint stands; it really doesn't feel right having to run from ice fiends this early on.

These are two of the best pieces of jewelery I've ever found. The DPS on this one is absolutely brutal. He cannot take many hits, though, and I'm again faced with the choice of using my single scroll of enchant armour on steam dragon hide or waiting for something better. I'm inclined towards the latter at the moment, and hoping for a Lair:8 with a few dragons. If I don't get any better hides before Orc, though, I may have to use the scroll because I will need the AC badly if I am to be swarmed with orc knights or worse.

Re: CiP: TrMo, currently atheist

Don't wait with enchanting steam dragon hide. Do it now.
1) One of the worst habits is keeping your goodies for later and dying because of not using them.
2) Dragons are not guaranteed in near future. Even if they were, their hides aren't.
3) Fire dragon armour or Ice dragon armour isn't instant remedy to bad defenses - your EV will go down and your attack speed will drop slightly, too. You have no rF+ or rC+ source and wearing rC- / rF- armour is dangerous in such case. You have trained no armour so far, which is reasonable, but also means that AC gain will be not impressive.
4) You'll get more enchant armour scrolls. Don't be too bound to the first one.

I've cleared the main dungeon down to the Depths, killed a fire dragon on the first level, then ran out for my life up to Lair to enchant it. I was using an artefact +2 mottled armour before, which was serving very well with rN+ and evocable invisibility on top of the fire resistance and decent AC, but I felt like the extra AC and level of fire resistance will be very helpful past this point. I had little else to spend my scrolls on, anyway, for my cloak and former suit of armour are both artefacts, and my hat is already fully enchanted.

Spider should be a breeze, but Swamp could be challenging and the Vaults are a pit of death and terror these days. Comments and suggestions are, as always, much appreciated. Thanks, everyone, for your help.

Re: CiP: TrMo, currently atheist

Dead to Norris's paralysis, which I thought clarity would protect against. You live and you learn.

I'm done with trolls for now, though, because of the horrible lack of defenses later on. Even in +5 fire dragon armor and the other stuff I had, I did not have nearly enough AC to actually take hits from things, and with bad dodging aptitudes they can't evade much either. The most frustrating thing, though, is having so few armour slots to make use of for resistances and other helpful things. They miss out on a huge amount of stuff. I was killing everything in a hit, yes, but one mistake (believing wrongly that clarity protected against paralysis) ended my game instantly.

I'm also not entirely pleased with Nemelex anymore, mostly because gaining favour by pressing o>p on every piece of junk in the dungeon and managing the piles of decks that are rained upon you is a tedious combination. He's very powerful, but I don't think I will be going with him in the future.

Back to trying other things. Yarr.

Despite the death, I'm very, very happy with this game. The DPS of this character was hilariously high. It just feels a bit unnecessary in the long run, seeing as anything that gets high unarmed combat or a good weapon can do enough damage to kill anything quickly, and in return trolls lose so much in terms of survivability.

Nope. Clarity protects against confusion/mesmerize/unintentional berserk, basically mental stuff. Stasis protects against speed and translocational related effects (teleport, blink, not banish however, para, slow, haste, berserk, finesse...). +.... MR is nowhere near enough to be safe around uniques that know paralyse.

One thing that would be a bit of help would be to wear a shield also. You only need 9 shields for a medium shield, and 15 for a large shield. It'll lower your damage somewhat, but it just goes from "outrageously high" to "pretty damn good" when you're a troll. And then your defenses go from "wet paper" to "several dry sheets of paper" which is probably worth it ;)

Re: CiP: TrMo, currently atheist

I like shields on my monks, yeah. And I've had several people tell me it's a no-no because of the lowered damage output. I dunno, I really notice the extra defense even on things that are not trolls. I understand shields have sort of diminishing returns but bucklers and medium shields seem to be pretty good things to have, honestly.

*Anything* with unarmed combat can have excellent damage potential from what I've seen, so I'm comfortable trading a bit of that if it will help me not die. I guess it just depends on the circumstances.

I have a DsMo right now that has been pretty funny and overall has had an awesome game. It got stuck with demonic guardian early on, which I really do not like much, and I proceeded to try my damnedest to kill it off without actually ctrl-Qing. The thing would absolutely not die. I stuck it right between Dowan, Duvessa, and IIRC a scorpion and proceeded to read-ID about a dozen scrolls (including immolation!) as they wailed on me and it just would *not* die. Ran headlong into every group of orc priests and wizards, took on a troll in a fist fight, practically set myself on fire and bullrushed a mottled dragon in front of an electric eel and a goliath beetle...and all I got for my trouble was a dragon hide. When it finally got to Lair perfectly healthy, well equipped, and absolutely none the worse for wear after all my attempts to brutally murder it, I just sighed and decided to try to win with it.

I'm afraid it'll just die and go to waste if I make a character thread for it, and I've made too many monk threads anyway, but still it's been the most interesting and fun game I've had in a long time and I am completely dumbfounded as to why and how it has shrugged off everything that I have thrown at it when I have lost so many DsMos with better and more useful mutations to much lesser things and with much more effort put into their continued survival.

It'll be a riot if this turns out to be my second win. What will I say? "Well, apparently I'm so bad at the game that if I intentionally try my hardest to play horribly it turns out to be an easy win?"

I can't figure it out. I don't think it's the items that are making him so hard to kill...

Re: CiP: TrMo, currently atheist

Mana shield is quite powerful, is probably the best single reason for feeling strong. I don't know if you already had that at the time you tried to die, though. Between rC scales and an rF ring, you've got decent resists, pretty high AC and EV, and unarmed will scale all game long...Seems pretty well set up so far.

Honestly demonic guardian isn't a bad mutation, and isn't worth killing yourself over. If you were focusing on unarmed, getting horns instead of claws is probably a "worse" mutation to get than happening to get demonic guardian.

Seems like a good time to train fighting.

Seems like you could do with Throwing? What are you doing for ranged utility, sorry if I overlooked it.
