Re: CIP DrCj of Vehumet part Duex

Sometimes you get a floor that's chock full of uniques, but that just happens, it has nothing to do with Spider per se. If you managed to clean out the hellish floor in spider chances are the next one will not be nearly so crazy. On the whole Spider is less dangerous than Shoals for most characters, in my opinion, so I'd probably keep chipping away at Spider.

Your Demon Blade of flaming or staff of air would be awesome but you've already said you aren't interested so whatever. I will mention that airstrike needs high power to keep up decent damage and staff of air would help, but I'd probably have lightning bolt memorized all the same, if you have access to it.

Rather than rush toward tornado I'd get about 5 levels in evoc, bring staves up to 12, and get better defenses. Then, and only then, would I start working toward tornado. In any case there's no reason to leave 9 levels open for spells atm and if there's anything that's actually castable or useful in the short term you should memorize that.

May I ask, why do you think so? Did you run some fsim tests?

One thing that is killing me is a lack of lightning spells and no utility spells (blink et al). No good air books and I hate to branch into fire now.

Re: CIP DrCj of Vehumet part Duex

Good news. Got a ring that gives me see invis and some other boosts (-2 acc hurts but not so much to toss it till I get better). So the trident is on the shelf and I am using the demon blade. DB of stabbing for normal fights and a flaming scrimitar if I have to finish off a hydra or something that's cold.

You are right, it's a lot more effective in fighting. I'll get my longblades skill up a bit and then back magic building.

Not eating my food it getting harder. If I have to lay down some clouds, I am hurting for food before the fight is over and I can eat chunks. Still a decent reserve of food in my cache, but I ate a bunch in my last session.

I am headed down the dungeon right now. Since I have a amulet to help with drain and negative energy, I am ready to head back to the Elf levels. The melee will let me go finish the spiders in case I see another Ghost Moth (burned a lot of wand charges on that one).

Crawl is not angband. You don't actually need see invis (very few monsters start out invisible and almost every invisible monster moves predictably) or a suite of resistances. Sometimes I find see invis and just leave it on the ground, so the idea that you're using crappy items on purpose for see invis is really strange to me. Have you had a problem with an invisible monster? I could tell you how to solve it without see invis if you'd like.

I am really interested to compare ways of dealing with Unseen Horror as DEVM in open terrain with sInv (just kill it with Venom Bolt) and without sInv (no consumables?).

The relevant things your new ring gives you are +Inv and +Rage.
If you walk into elf with 134 HP and 17 EV you are going to die.

My experience is that having no see invis or poison resistance ends the game by the mid levels. That is has just been my experience.

One of the reasons I like unseen horrors is because there are so many possible ways to deal with them. I assume you mean early enough that the unseen horror is actually dangerous - there are fewer options, but still some. If you are really desperate, you could meph the direction you think it is in (or yourself) and just walk away. This can be either to escape or to go to something like a corridor where you can easily kill the unseen horror, even with sting. If you are near a room you can just go in the room and close the door. If you are close enough to stairs you can also just casually walk away and go up them, too.

Characters like this might also have found some items that help a lot with unseen horrors. Wands of paralysis or polymorph work very well, as does curare. Even a blowgun and regular needles can kill an unseen horror, but you may want to be at full health and prepared, first. Summons work fine, if you have them, but you should press tw if they do not have see invisible so that they can actually attack it. Sticky flame is obviously good and can be available early, and some people like to use scrolls of fog. These are just some things you can do. In short, unseen horror is a monster that can seem intimidating but in most cases can only kill you if you let it.

I had no idea you can order summons without SInv to attack an invisible creature if you know the square it's on.

Re: YASD DrCj of Vehumet part Duex

tw just makes them wander, which allows them to either 'bump into' the unseen horror or retaliate against it when it attacks them.

Re: YASD DrCj of Vehumet part Duex

I learned a funny way to kill Unseen Horror in my current game where I am a DEVM of Kiku - I 't'old allies to 'w'ait, retreated into a corridor and then 't'old allies to 'f'ollow me. They tried to get adjacent to me and killed Unseen Horror for me without having sInv.
