Otherwise known as "No I don't want to bash the orb guardian with my lantern of shadows now FLY YOU FOOL!"
This began as a slightly frustrated attempt at seeing the Glaciate spell in use. I figured I'd just boot up a Sprint or two, speed level my way up there, and just take a look at the spell. It ended with legitimate attempts at the Orb, and eventually a sneaky little spriggan got lucky with Sigmund and a wand of healing and the game was on.
The first major roadblock isn't actually Sonja herself, it's the elephant slug in the room to the left. It tends to survive even a dagger stab, and they're kinda dense when it comes to enchantments. You need hexes high enough for invisibility to take it out after the stab. And then you need to hope Sonja doesn't wake up when you open the door. There's a lot of that, actually. The trapdoor spiders aren't too bad if you have a strong hibernation spell and some patience, and that pocket of shops is basically your early game goal. You're looking for awesome stuff in there, which I found in the form of ring of Ghae {+Fly rPois EV+1 Acc+6 Dam+4} and ring "Varecsau" {Dex+2 Stlth++}. The rPois let me walk up on the gargoyle in the confusion room, and the flight (and stealth++) was key to stabbing the Lernean hydra later in the game.
The second major roadblock is the 4 demonic crawlers just after the demonologist room. They're fast, resistant to enchantments, and enjoy chewing faces off. Their one weakness- doors! Taking care of them wasn't easy. I ended up luring them into the earlier half of the dungeon, and then waiting a large number of turns (thousands really.) I would emerge once more to find that I could close the door on them and trap them in the first half of the game- which was fine until I realized the Orb would make me go there. So- you know that door with the 12 headed hydra? Turns out you can Enslave hydras.
I dragged Lenny back and he took care of all the crawlers with like 5% hp left and I rewarded his efforts by sealing him in a room with an explosive prism that he wouldn't attack because he was friendly to it. Aww.The rest of the game consisted mainly of me taking one step into Lom Lobon's room, waking him up, and then running at top speed away from him. Several Orbs did almost nothing to him, and he ended up going up and right into the steam hallway looking for me while I snuck to the Orb. I would have died from the miasma clouds if I hadn't had that Wand of Healing from Siggy and a few curing potions. What came next was by far the funniest and luckiest part of the run, where I stood next to the closed door in the Orb's hallway and manually mashed shift-5 to make it wait turns for me to recover hp while four fire giants yelled impotently at me from across 2 grates. I thought something was missing in that hallway when I grabbed the orb, destroyed the first grate, and then poked my head in only to discover the waterway was a closed thing and TIAMAT WAS THERE OH GOD RUN
Quaffed speed and took off for the light instantly. Lom tried to intercept me, but I took a bolt to the back and ran on. A shadow from the Lantern blocked his path. A Orb Guardian nearly ended the run when I walked right into it in a panic and it clubbed me for almost all my hp. Whoops. Forgot to train dodging. Oh well. I lived. Yay!
Surely there must be better runs/ more people playing this. I can't actually be #13 in the CAO Sonja Sprint ranking.
