YASD: Vamp Enchanter Bodied by Nergall Mines 4

Well I am a noob and this my most successful character yet. I fought extremely meticulously and carefully through the dungeon, getting to level four of the orcish mines. I had a combo going where I would use a staff of wizardry + very high hex skill to sleep enemies and then switch to my dagger of electrocution to finish them off. Meanwhile, I was turning invisible to avoid retribution and just running through most of the dungeon.

I very carefully picked apart the orcish mines, playing like a complete pansy to keep myself safe...

When I finally thought I was ready to enter the main courtyard (containing several orc heroes I had never seen before) I was encircled by spectral orcs summoned by an orc named Nergalle and died about two turns after the summon dropped. I misclicked my 's' key, and thought I was aiming my Phial of Floods when I was actually walking forward twice. By the time I realized that, I was already almost dead. I tried to turn invisible to save myself but I guess I should have xv'd the orcs more carefully because they zapped me and that was it >_<

This one really hurts.. Crab of Crabs... you were a true hero.

It looks like you were doing Orcish Mines branch before Lair branch. The opposite is almost always a better idea.
Also wizardry doesn't add more power to your spells, it just reduces chance to fail at casting them.
If you want to talk skills: I think you have too much Stealth and too much Hexes, not enough Short Blades (especially with that weapon) and Dodging - but I'm not very good at Enchanters.

BTW: What is with this 'bodied' word you use? In English, that's not a word on its own. Do you mean one of these words?: 'killed' 'destroyed' 'massacred' 'annihilated' or maybe even 'ruined'?

I interpreted "bodied" (as a native English speaker) as "turned into a body" which seemed like a awkward way of saying "killed"

Out of context "bodied" in English actually means "having a body" typically it's used with some adjective (Like "hard bodied" to imply well-muscled)

Bodied is american slang for 'killed', you guys have never heard of that? I thought it was pretty common...

Sar described problems with skilling, I can try to give some hints for tactics.
As En (and especially as VpEn who does not care much about contamination/food) you really should check every unknown (to you) monster to find if it sees invisible. If it does not, then just cast Invisibility and kill it, this is why Lair is extremely easy for En (no monsters can see invisible there). If it does, then it becomes much more complicated. I use several approaches depending on terrain and my defenses:
1) If there is one monster who sees invisible and there are many monsters who do not (1 Ogre Magi + several Ogres; 1 Orc Sorcerer + several Orcs), cast invisibility, ignore those orcs/ogres and go for that single Magi/Sorcerer.
2) If there are several monsters who see invisible or if your defenses are bad and you cannot risk being noticed, lure them one by one (throw something at one or cast corona or just shout), use EH/Confusion (save invisibility for emergency). By luring I mean that you should retreat immediately so that only 1 monster can see you.
3) Use Enslavement. Enslaving Orc Warlords/Knights while being invisible is very efficient and fun.
4) Retreat early, especially as bloodless Vp who cannot regenerate but can transform into bat.

Sandman, thanks for the tips! The enslavement one seems very helpful and I didn't realize that only the enemy that sees invisible will see me (as opposed to DnD where Sinv is 'shared' among enemies) Can I ask why leveling hexes / stealth that high is a bad idea? I want to make sure that I can hit with confuse / hibernation and then kill with stab in one hit.

My plan has always been -

Step 1: Disable with hibernate or, if that's not possible confuse

Step 2: OHKO with stab

Without my skills that high, i worry that my success rate on either half of my plan will falter and if that happens I won't get the kill. I worry that the most dangerous enemies, like the caster that killed me, usually have high MR and I will not be able to confuse or hibernate them in a reasonable number of attempts. Even with my skills that high I still see the occasional red herring normal orc that resists my spells several times in a row (very rare but it does happen.) The orc sorcerors in the mines were resisting my hibernation attempts 5/6 times or so...

I was under the impression that leveling my hexes makes that less likely. Also, I need to make sure my success rate on casting invisibility is very high since I rely on it so heavily once I get to the mid-game... so that's another reason to power level hexes. Without high hexes the failure rate on invis can be as high as 60% or so... but I feel like I need it to be less than 10% if I want to rely on it to keep me alive.

If my stealth isn't high enough to OHKO with stab then I worry I will be very vulnerable to ogres and other enemies that do large amounts of damage on it... especially if my hexes isn't high enough to immediately disable them if they don't die in one hit...


Also: It seems to me like webtiles is very laggy right now. Is there a different server from the default that I can connect to somehow? I find it very difficult to play on webtiles these days since I lag about 1/20th of the time which can be very disorienting.

High skill levels are more expensive than early skill levels. For example, training something from 22 to 27 takes about the same experience (skill) points as training it from 0 to 19.
So those Hex levels were expensive.

Your spell power for Confusion spell with 2 Spellcasting, 17.1 Hexes and 21 int was about 62.
(2/2+17.1*2)*2.1=73.9, after applying stepdown it is 50+23.9/2=62.
With 14 Hexes it would be 55. Really minor difference.
(2/2+14*2)*2.1=60.9, after applying stepdown it is 50+10.9/2=55.
With 8 Spellcasting and 13 Hexes it would be 56 but you had much more MP to use "cast EH, transform into bat, retreat, untransform, cast EH again" tactics.

Stab damage of Short Blades is determined by average of Stealth and Short Blades. You had 5 and 15.8, average 10.4. It could be better to have 10 (dagger with electro at min delay is very good weapon) and 14 (average Stab 12, enough for a Hydra usually).

En does not need much stealth in Lair/Mines because EH/Invisibility/Confuse are safer and more reliable.

You may want to learn Dazzled Spray/Mephitic Cloud (both work good for low HD high MR targets).
Also don't train Necromancy for Animate Skeleton, it's ok to use it at 0 skill and 30% failure rate.

Note that if you follow Kiku you probably do want to train Necro and get useful Necro spells + probably Animate Dead and Coprse Rot so you could pray for some cadavers and then quickly turn them into zombies or clouds of miasma in one cast (just don't stand in miasma yourself).

I think that having high levels of stealth and hexes is pretty normal for an enchanter, but you need at least a bit of defensive skills, like 8-12 fighting and dodging. 5 shields if you have a buckler is pretty easy to train and gives you some defense, too. Having a ring of ice is very good for maximizing your spellpower of hibernation, btw.

And if you find an awesome weapon like a dagger of electrocution, then having 10 lv short blades is a must, as you can just kill many monsters without trying to disable/stab them.

Got it! I was trying to determine how to level short blades, having 10 skill at short blades will cause a dagger to have minimum delay, is that true for other short blades as well? Or does a short sword require more skill to get minimum delay.

8 for quickblades(0.3 attack speed), 10 for daggers, 12 for short blades and 14 for sabers(cutlasses in trunk, all short blades other than QBs have 0.5 speed). Oh and for short blades with speed brand you need 2 levels less, as far as I know and they all have 0.3 attack speed.

Got it! I have been looking for the specific skilll requirements for different skills and items (basically exactly what you listed but for bucklers, shields... different armors...) I can't find the information any wheere, not even on the crawl wiki. Is there some database where this kind of stuff is listed in a cohesive way?

I have the link as a URL search myself, so I hit Control-T for a new tab and just type 'crawl shields' then enter and it takes me right to my search results (I'm a bit of a url-based search-a-holic)

In case anyone else wants to do this, in chrome you go into your settings, hit manage search engines, then scroll down to the bottom, put some name in the first field, put some search term (I just use 'crawl') in the keyword SPAAACE and:

If you get annoyed by simple vernacular I really have no sympathy for your position nor do I care.

PSA every one there are DEFINITELY enemies in the lair that can see invis. I learned this the hard way after teleporting in to a pack of wolves with Sinv on lair 8. :/ Good bye super crawler you were my favorite.

Wolves have a worse trait - sense invisible. So they are even better at detecting you and you can't blind them. (You can blind usual SInv, right?)
